I PLAYED POKE?.
TOWIN MONEY WITH WHICH
TO SAVE HIS SON.
THE CONDEMNED BOY
Heard, Threw His Bible Down
And Lit /“Cigarertt.
Pittsburg, Pa . Dec. 11—Phillip
Hill, the murderer of George Lau
rence, was reap itwd from hang
ing to day by sheriff Harvey Low
ry under the most peculiar cir
* cumstancea.
Governor Hastings had i ued
the order forth. hanging to take
place on Dec. 11, and everything
tn readiness tor the execution.
Last week George Douglass, anoth
er murderer was hanged, and Hill
prayed for him while the execu
ti n t r, ok place.
Asa Hill, father of the condemn
ed man, pleaded with the attor
neys who conducted his son’s de
fense to save him. The old mail
's a miner, and went among his
telbw-work-men to collect the
money.
The miners were cn a strike,
and they could not h‘dp him.
The strike being settled, the old
man renewed hie efforts, and
collected $lO. He took it to ihe
attorneys who said it was scarcely
enough with which to make an
appeal.
The old man decided to try and
give his bey’s neck in a game of
poker. He staked his S4O and
lost. With tears he returned to
the attorneys who threw up the
case.
The condemned man’s mother,
after speaking her in nd to her
husband for his ignorance of the
game of pocker, besieged the at
torneys in the case and induced
them to ask Governor Hastings,’
who is at Hot Springs, Va., for a
reprieve.
The G varnor refused to inter
foie, aid as a last resort. Hill’s
counsel this morning entered a
writ of error in the Supreme
Con.t and iiad it served on Sheri
iff Lowry a half-hour before the'
time fixed for ths execution.
Sheriff Lowry consulted his attor
ney, who said that under an en
actment of 1897 the writ of error
from the Prothonotary of the
Supreme Court was equal to one
issued by the Supreme Court
Judge,
Inside th • j til all the final prep
arations for the hanging were
going on Hill, the murderer, with
Rav J. W. Gazoway, his spiritual
advises, prayed and sang hymns
until the Sheriff entered the cell.
He told Hill that instead of com

announced that the banging
was postponed indefinitely.
Hill, who was reading his Bi

nounced the postponement of the
execution threw the book down
on receiving the unexpected in
tiHigence and lit a cigarette as
ho mumbled “thank you,”

A i i’fmi’ting To Open Negotiations
With Patriots.
Havana Dec. 11—Despite repo s
to the contrary General Gcmez is
in hotter health than al any other
time since he landed on the
island.
According to a member of Ihe
stall of General Gomez Spain has
made a mistake in attempting t<
end through negotiations this strife
in Cuba by dealing with men
(Cubans who have had no part in
it) who are as foreign to the army
as the Turks.
Advices from Santa Clare state
hut General Gomez has lett Lis

and is busy organizing the troops
for a strong combination against
Spain. One of General Gomez's
objects is to prevent the sugar

The attitude of the Havana

in the forts and barracks prepared
to suppress a demonetation. The
volunteers are in a eullen mood.
In Sagna la Grange the intran

every obstacle in the way of the
establishment of autonomy. They
declare that if Spain cannot pro

rule but they will never submit to
be ruledby Cubans.
The intransigeates have declar

There exists among women who
are much in society a form of wea
kness resulting from overtaxed
nerves, interne and depress
ing thaifauy known to tired mus
cles.
The overcrowded lives of such
women make them slaves of anx
ieties and annoyances which they
cannot ignore.
The following letter from one of
New York’s busiest hostesses shows
how implicit'y Paine’s celery com
pound is relied on among the most
intelligent, well-to.do families as
well as the many more humble
households all over the country.
New Xork City, Oct 9 1897.
Gentlemen—l think it but fair
to you that I bear testimony to
the beneficial results of my use of
Paine’s celery compound.
Two years ago I was alm >st a
wreck ./om neivous prostration,
resulting from overwork, mental
and physical. I had lost my mem
ory completely, and friends feared
I would never recover. After try
ing several medicines to no avail,
my physician prescribed Paine’s
celery compound, and within a
few days there was a decided itn •
provement in my condition.
After the use of three bottles I
was so much better that it was
unnecessary for me to continue
its use. Since then I have recom
mended it widely, and have yet to
hear that it has failed to do all
that I claim for it.

To any one suffering from any
of the ills attended upon continued
loss of sleep I can and do heartily
recommend it. Veiy truly yours,
May me L, Haines.
In all cases of nervous prostra
tion, nervous indigestion, neural
gia, sleeplessness, hysteria or in
cessant headache, the objective
point of a true remedy like Paine’s
celery compound is to make more
blood, gather flesh and increase
the number of red, health-g’ving
corpuscles in the blood. Paine’s
celery compoud tills the vessels
with red blood, drives oui the
dangerous humors and thus gives
relief to a boat of aches, paines
and weaknesses.
Women and men who hava lost
flesh and grown colorless and are
subject to aches and paines gam
quickly in health from Paine’s
celery compound. There is hardly
a family of any size where there is
not some member who is feeble,
forever tired and below the stand
ard of health to whom Paine’s
celery compound would prove of
invaluable help. Not only dees
this great invigorator drive out
the achesand distresses that have
accumulated because of neglected
rheumatism or neuralgia, but the
liberal gain of flesh and blood
that it always a noticeable and
encouraging result of its use.brings
about better health in the diges
tive organs. In other words, all
over the body.
