CALIFORNIA S WONDER-
FUFUL HONEY-BEE GAVE
Dili yen ever sen n bee tree with
a swarm of bees around it? Well
magnify that <.bout 10,000 times
you will have a slight idea of a
natural bee hive in Medocino
county, not far from I kon . But
this one is i.ot in a tree. It >*
in a rift in the face of the cliff
and tradition his it that there is
a large cave inside where the myr
iads of busy insects make their
homes.
This great natural curiosity is
known to residents of the adjacent
county as “Bee Cock" and have
grown to look upon it as a com
monplace when in reality it is the
only bee hive of the kind in ex
istence at least the prabobilities
are that is for no reference to
such a freak can be found in any
scientific or popular work on en
tomology. In fact the bees live
there contrary to all accepted the
ories in regard to their habits.
Natural bee hivi s in hollow' trees
are all right but why this pecu
liar colony should have selected
a hole in a reck is past under
standing?
There is no danger of a person
g« tling very near this natural bee
hive without knowing it, for at all
hours of the day a swarm of in
sects hover about several hundred
feet in all directions . An incessant,
maddening buzz fills the air that
can be heard an eighth of a mile
and serve as a warning not to ven
tme too near. But men do ven
ture near after having first put on
a suit of leather clothing, fasten
ad a mask of wire screen around
thier hat brim and lighted a good
big torch. These precautions are
aosolutely ueecessary.
It takes .nerve to approached
close to th * rock and the exper
ience is a never to be forgotten
oue. Bees to the nu nhar of mil
lions will light on the intruder
humming fiendishly and endeav
oring to sting him to death’ They
form a perfect cloud and air is
tilled with a fetid smell and a
fine dust that gets through the
wire screen and causes an irrita
tion of the eyes? The tiny in
etes really show signs of vici
ousness and tly into the flame
of the torch in countless number
as though they intended to ex
tinguish it and round they tly
with a deafening buzz and strong
indeed is the man who can stand
the onslaught of the foes for
more than a few mimutes.
It is almost impossible to
make out just where the entrance!
to this natural bee hive is. I

There is a sort of cavern in ’he!
cliff that seems to have a crack
through the inner wall from
’he top to the bottom but
most of the the bees hover around
a hole about eighteen inches wide
and appear to make that the point
of ingress and egress.
Many davs it is impossible to see
the cliff thickly covered is it with
insects and they red I in ami out of
the opening like a stream of mo
lasses figh’ing stinging buzzing
with madness. ■
During the summer dead birds
can always be seen on the ground
around the mouth of the hive.
They have been stung to d -ath
while attempting to tly through
the swarm of insects. Fourfooted
creatures never venture within
half a mile of the hive, seeming to
know that death lurk-’ there.
In front of the mouth cf the
hive there is a pile of dried honey
that Fas Mowed from the interior
It looks like a heap of molten la
va that |has been hardened after
beirg discharged from a volcano.
A party of men living in the vi
cinity claim to have entered this
natural bee hive several years ago.
They selected a cold day in winter,
when the bees were half dormant,
and poured coal oil and benzine
around and into the opening Then
they made a big fire of wood so
that the whole cavern was filled
with 11 ones. Then they poked the
redhot embers down into the open
ing and so killed every bee in it.
But there was not much to see
after the men got inside. Only
a large cave wuth the walls cov
et -d with gum and dried honey
and enough oi the sweetness in
pools in the bottom to last a big
city for several years. Os course
the honey was ui fit for use oi,
account of being full of dead
bees and ashes from the fire. The
men, however, diu not linger in
the cave any great length of time,
as it was foul-smelling and sti
tli' g.
Although countless millions of
bees must have been destroyed on
this occasion the next smmer they
were just as numerous as ev«r and
just as vicious.
Indians, of the neighborhood
say that in “the good old days”
ihe bad men of their tribe were
bound hand and foot aud carried
to within a shost distance of the
bee hive by men wrapped in blan
kets. There the helpless creatures
were left to suffer the awful agony
lof being stung to death.—
