FOR I HE GROOM
A KfNIUCKf MURDER
i Jim I’e’ikinh who Stole Esat Tay
i.orus Daucihteh, Shot.
T<-mpkinsville, Ky., Due. 17.
A shooting occurred yesterday in
the outskirts of town which may
result in the loss of one man's
life.
Yesterday evening near Eighty
Beghty, Barren county, Jim p er .
kins, Jr,, eloped with Esau Tay
lor’s daughter, aud they went to
Clementvii le, v. here they were
married.
On their return this morning
they were met in the edge of Tomp
kinsville by the infuriated father
of the girl, who opened fire on the
groom with a doubled-harrel shot
gun.
The charge nf buckshct took ef
fect in Perkin’s face, right arm
and side, laylor nude his escape
but Sheriff Pal terso.i and a posse
are in hot pursuit, Perkins bled
profusely. Drs. Duncan ,Bushong
and Walden dressed the wounds.
mg ice hoping to reach Ft. Yukon
320 miles distant where there is a
large stock of provisions but not
enough I am afraid for the multi
tude of unprovided p rsons. There
will be terrible tinma in this
country before the spring comes,
and deaths from st; rvation will
probably be numbered by the
hundreds, if not by the thousands.
The American Govornmmit ought
to take steps at once to send a
winter relief expedition to Dawson
as fully four-fifths of the dis'ress
ed people here are citizens of the
Uni'ed States while one-fi f th are
from Canada.
RELIEF VIA JUNEAU,
Such an undertaking could be
carried throug snccesstu’iv taking
only experienced miners from
Juneau Alaska to carry provisions
over Dyar Pass in early March
1898 and bringing the same down
on the Yukon ; ce surface during
the last days of March and the
first days of April. Sleds would of
course be used. This relier would
c< me at the time when most sorely
noodod ne no provisions can come
up the Yukon from Behring’s Sea
before July.
It will be practically impossible
for many people to escape up the
river (Yukon) on the ice this win
ter as thf-'.e are nc dried salmon
here or along the river for the
d -gs which draw the provision
sleds through the fresh snow in
early winter. Late in the winter
(March) some men can draw their
own sleds, but only those of grea t
physical strength and not weakeii
by privations. Two-thirds of the
destitute people in Dawson are
not miners are not inured to hard
ships and would surery perish if
they were to attempt to leave the
country this coming winter. lhey
are trapped. I have carefully con
sidered this whole subject and can
reach no other conclusions.

-I’Hed Thousand for Injures,
j Washington, Dec. 17.—The
Haytian government has informed
’he State Department »f its willing
ness to refer the claim of Bernard
an American citizen,
to arbitration.
This action is the direct result
of the resolution of inquiry intro
duced in the Senate a fsw days
ago by Senator Kyle, of South
Dakota.
Campbell YJclaim is for SIOO,OOO
and grew out of the in juries he re
ceived as a result of being beaten
oy men, who, he claims, were
Haytian soldiers.
It is generally believed that this
government will accept arbitration,
as there is some doubt with res
pect to the facts and the amount
of indemnity involved.
