bl r FIGHT TO DEATH .
THE WfiH OS SLAIN
Max Who Betrayed Her Years
Ag j I he Murder
Da ton, Ga., .Dec. 23—The
hi l story of the Van Zandt trag
unavailable last night, is
plow at hand.
. TY wi v\ hitten, formerly a brake
ihe \\ jsterh and Atlantic
railr- ad, shot Annie Van Zandt,
1 you. g woman, in her house near
. ’he depot, in Tunnell Hill, w.th
a 38-caliber revolver, the ball en
-1 tering her stomach and lodging
her spine, causing almost in
stant death.
Whiten was immediately arrest- 1
edbythe marshal. the uproar'
, having I gun before the shooting,
and he i, uow in jail in Dalton.
Ihe cause of shooting seem to
have liceu as follows: Annie Van
Zandt was a former Dalton girl,
living here with her father, who
came from Ohio, and it is said
until the year 1892 led a virtuos
life.
In this year she swore out a
warrant for Whitten, charging
Inm with breach of promise and .
seduction, but Whitten, anticipat
ing such a result, left Tunnel Hill ,
and w int to the Indian Territory.
While there be married, and
during last summer returned with <
wife and chi d to Tunnel Hilll. j
He S'emed to be trying to lead an j
upright, desent life, but, it is said ;
that although the warrant had ]
been dismissed. Miss Van Zandt
tried in inanv ways to piovoke ;
him into resurrecting the old 1
scandal. <|
Tuesday evening hifen went t
to Miss Van Zandt’s house and 8
tried t> make her give back an h
I old engagement ring, which he
b...'l give her in 1892, This ehe p
.re used to do, whereupon Whit- w
| ten drew his revolver and shot b
! her dead. §
IT WAS A D iOBLE SHOTTING. c
Whitten was brought to Dalton b
'and jailed. The particulars as u
learned here are that he was un
der the ii fluence of whisky when
he committed the deed. He was
in turn shot in the leg by Miss
I Van Z mdt.
I After tbe shooting Whitten
wr it h im '. put up his pistol, got |
his lan'ern and went out to look
for a plivsician not believitur he
had kdh d his victim. Wliiie look
ing for the doc or was arrested by
Mr Will Mauldin the hotel pro
prietor U bitten made two desper
ate a’tempts to get away but
Mauldin w s too able „ man to
vet lq-se irom.
Whitten is well known here as
an amateur baseball player. His
, victim came here with h< r fath
mother and one si-ter from
' Findlay Ohio about ten years ago
Her moth r died here and was
sent home for burial. The fam
ily then moved to Tuonel Hill.
Tue fath' ris quite old and is
prostrated from this last blow,
IT IS A LONG TIME OFF.
But The Eari y Candidate Ta At
Work For The Office.
Savannah, Ga.. Dec. 23 Ihe
friends f Mr. Livingston Kenan

members of the bar here for the
last day or two to i ecure for him
and indorsement for the election
to the soliciton-h p of the Atlantic
circuit, the new circuit to be made
by the division of theJEastern cir
cuit. So far he ha? been the only
candidate mentioned.
The name of Colonel George 1 ■
Cajin. inspector general of rifle
practice < f Georgia, has been prom
inently mentioned in connection
with the ju tgesbip. The election
