dts Best to Leave Out
- Matter Sometimes
"There never Was, nor never
will be, a man who canpublish a
paper that will please everybody.
®Such a thing is impossible,
Many a time an editor leaves
~out first class news matter, simp
ly, becavse it would injure the
town if it appeard in the home
paper. Horace Greely once said
that "it was more in knowing
what to leave out of a paper,
then what to put jin one.” And
Greeley was right about it. We
haive as sober, moral, law-abid
ing class of people here in Hazle
hurst and surrounding country
as you will find in the state.
Yet, should we ge round and
gather up every little crap game,
fight, etc., that occurred among
the negro population week after
week, and gather up all other
matter of this class, and publish
it, the outside world would think
that Hazlehurst was a bad
town. It is eur desire to do
Hazlehurst and Jeff Davis coun
ty all the good we can, during|
our sty here, and as little harm
a 8 possible.
‘We Felt Serry for the
» Girl,
* When the South hound A.C.L.
passenger train stopped at Hom
erville last Friday morning, a
middie age lady gotaboard and
took a seat rightin front of us.
Bhe had a little girl along with
her who occupied the same seat,
and another daughter between
16 and 17 years of age, who was
sitting on the seat in front of her
with a young feillow who had his
mouth full of gold teeth, and whol
was smiling all the time. From |
‘what we could learn, this lady
and her two daughters lived
down in Florida, somewhiere,
and had been up in Clinch county
to visit relatives, and it seemed
like the young lady had caught
a beau, in this gold teeth youth.
Oh, the way he did spark her anu
show his teeth. Finally the
newsbutcher came along with a
basket of candy and fruit. Hel
lingered near them a few wno
ments, telling what nice things hz
bad to sell. The fellow turned
his back to the butcher and
stopped grinning for a moment |
or two, while the gir! lookedi
'wishful at the basket of candy
and fruit, The butcher passed
om to us, and we bought liberally
from him for our little boys, He
passed cn but socon returned,
atopping near the young couple
again with his candy and fruit
The girl looked longingly at the
nice peaches in the basket, and
remarked that ‘she was very
fond of peaches.” The iei'ow
looked off again, and the butcher
passed on. FKinally the ' felisw ]
took a seat elsewhere. |
" We felt just like get.ing up
and buying a dollar’s worth ot
fruit and candy for that giri,
and giving it to herin the pres
ence of that cl.eap .sciew, “ciin
chey’’ fellow—and wou.d L.ave
done so had we knowh the girl
telling her to waste no wmwore
time on such a thing.
We have seen these kind cos
“tin-horn cheap sports”’ belvre.
That feilow was badly stuck on
himself. He thought that by
oxhibiting those gold teeth ail
the tine, by keeping up one pro
{racted grin, that he could cap
ture any girl. Girls, take our
advice If you areever caught
off with your beaus, and they
ireat you like this fellow treated
liis sweetheart, kick ’em as high
48 a pine tree, and under no
circumstances never make Lp
Jwith them again.
