Mys, Mary McTachin has had
two mere nice rooms added to
her house, and improved inother
respects. |
Hazlehurst can beast of ten
passenger trains daily now. Six
on the Southeyn and four on the
G, & . road.
A very inferesting protracted
meeting has been in progress ab
the Methodist church for the
past ten days. .
J. H. Boone, our genial post:
master, has had a nice, substan
tial stairway erected in front of
his bu}lding.
Mrs,). G. W. Best attended the
Indian Springs camp meeting
which clesed its annual ten days
meeting last Sunday night.
Mr, Carl Spivey, who has been
employed by the Jesup Electric
Light Co., for several months, is
hereona visit to friends and
relatives.
They are forging right ahead
on our waterworizs plant. Ere
long we will be dvinking artesian
water, and all you witl have to do
3 get it, is to turn a fosset. Oh,
we're a-coming.
~ Mrs. Dr. Montgomery and
Mys. Walter Hinson, have been
drinking Indian Springs water
and enjoying the camp meeting
which elosed last Sunday night.
We can see it plainly, by “'the
hand-writing on the wall,” that
there's going to be 2 hot time in
Jeff Davis county next year, in
politics. ‘ .
Bon.L. W. Johnson, our rej
resentative in the Legislature
returned home last ¥riday from
Atlanta. He got many bills
through during the session that
will be a great benefit to our
county., He surely represented
Jeff Davis county well.
Mr, C. C. Stanley returned to
Hazlehurst Mcnday night from
North Georgia, where he had
been for the past month visiting
friends and re.atives., He reports
having had a cplendid time while
away. .
We've alorcing in our heart
(and have had it there all the
summer) to go fishing, and we
just be-dog-gone if we can get off
it seems. Then some people
will-talk about what a big time
the country.editor has, when we
con’t even take one day off,
Dr. R. H. Creen, our popular
dentist, is a very happy man
these days. His good wife pre
sented him with a fine eight
pound boy on Saturday night
last. Mother 2nd babe are get

Mr. W. B Attoway beught the
bale of new cotton Mr. Wm.
Morris brought in on Menday
last paying 12c¢ts per pound for
i“. Mr., Attoway brought in the
first bale himself, and Mr. Mor
tis was only one hour behind him
with his bale. : §
A negre fell into the Altamaha
on Wednesday last, while at work
cn the railroad bridge, and was
drown. Itis said that he never
rose to the survice any more
after he disappeared ir the water,
He probably got hung te a
shag, or something of the kind,
when he went under. Itis said
that the.river has been very fnll
for many days. The Altamaha
seems 10 be a very treacherous

so My, Berry could have the
privilege of the size school in
thas town a 8 he had made up his
mind te study for the ministry.
Rev. J. A Ansley, our Baptist
minister, filled his regular ap
pointment here on Sunday last,
preaching in the forenoon to a
large congregation. There were
no services at his church at night
owing to the fact that a protrac
tad meeting was in progress at
the Methodist church, and he at
tended this church at night. My, |
Ansley is a goul preacher and
our people think a great deal of
him. He devides his time be
tween Baxjey and this place. He
preaches here every first and
third Sunday.
Master Urban Middleton left
Macon on Saturday last, with
his sister and brother-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. P. W, Leffler, far

Pittsburg and Philadelphia, and
other large cities. Sq¢ yeu see
Urban will travel many miles
and visit many places before he
aces Haziehurst agaim. But
wont he have something to tell
his boy chums when he returns
home. ;
We want to state in justice to
Mr. R. J. Roddenberry, who was
Secretary of the Singing Con
vention at Zora church on July
24th, that it was ne fault of his
that the proceedings of this con
vention was mnot published in
The News. He brough the copy
in, and we intended to publish
same, but owning to being scarce
of type, and being crewded with
matter THAT HAD TO BEINSERTED
is why the minutes of this sing
ing convention have not appeared
in our paper. We trust that it
will not be long now until we
have a sufficient quantity of type
ta set up all the copy that comes
to this office for p#blication.

You can address him now as
Tadge J. C. Bennett, instead of
“Professor,” for on Saturday
afternoon ' last he received| the
pews that the Governor had ap
pointed him IJudge of the City
Court of Hazlehurst. There were
two after thisappointment, Judge
Bennett and Col. P. L. Bmith.
Both are popular and competent
men, and sent up lenghty peti
tions. to the Governor, besides
they had prominent men work
ing for them in Atlanta, and it
was a problem—up to the ap
pointment—who would be the
winner., Judge Lennett is teo
well kmown in this section to need
any cpmmendatio-: from us.
There had been no appointment
for Solicitor made up to tiwe ot
going to press. There were two
aspirants for this oilice, Col, J. R.
Grant and Judge Jullian H, Par
ker. The supposition is, neither
of these will be appointed by the
Governor but the appointee will
be a ‘‘dark-horse.”
Our merchants are receiving
their fall and winter goods daily
now. We dropped into T. H.
Weatherly’s store for a few mo
ments recently, and found the
proprietor and _his affable and
obliging clerk,Mr. J. B. McVeigh,
just as busy-as they could be,
opening up and marking new
goods. Myr. Weatherly certainly
carries a large stock ¢f goods.
And, he epjoys a fine trade, the
year around. The people of Jeff
Davis county know him well § for
he has been in the mercantile
buginess at this place for many
years, and they know that when
T. H. Weatheriy tell them that &
suit of clathes, pair of shoes er
any other kind of goods are all
right, they can de])e:;d' upon it
By honest, square dealings. and
truthful statements, he has long
‘since yon the confidence of the
trading people of this county.
