Messrs. Editors, in conclusion, I would like to

For Governor—Jefferson Davis.
It will be seen by the following announce
ment that the nomtnating committee have met,
and ratified the nomination already made by the
People in their primary assemblages, of Col.
Jefferson Davis for the office of Governor.
In this instance, as in every other when the
C>le have called upon him to serve them, he
yielded to their wishes. The preliminary
proceedings will be ratified at the polls, and he
will be triumphantly called to the Executive
chair:
To the People of Mississippi.
The committee which was appointed by the
Convention, which was held in the city of Jack
son on the 16th and 17th of June last, to fill by
nomination any vacancy which might occur in
the ticket which was then offered to the people,
has been relieved of the necessity of indicating
a suitable candidate to supply the vacancy oc
casioned by the withdrawal of Gen. Quitman.
The people and the Derno.-ratic press of the
whole State have already nominated Col. Jef
ferson Davis, for Governor of Mississippi.—
We regard, therefore, Col. Davis as the candid
ate of the people, and we will not withhold the
expression of the ready and cordial concurrence of
the committee.
E. C. WILKINSON, Chairman.

ny This is to certify, that I had been afflicted
about three years with a violent Cough, with every
symptom of confirmed Consumption. After hav

I was told of Dr. Tutt's Pectoral Elixir. I pro

bottles, when I was entirely cured, and have had
no return of the disease since.

OF ™ E STEAMER
WASHINGTON.
COTTON ADVANCED 1-8 PENNY.
Charleston, Sept. 23.
The steamer Washington has arrived at New
York, with Liverpool dates to 9th inst.
Cotton had advanced one eighth penny, and
the sales on Tuesday were 10,000 bales.
Further per Washington.
The lower qualities of Flour were in fair de
mand—prices unchanged; the better qualities
were languid. Corn is quoted 6d lower, best
qualities 265. to 6d. At London, the Sugar mar
ket was not so firm, buyers were asking con
cessions. There was a fair demand for Coffee.
Consols closed at 96j to f.
Tobacco unchanged.
Great preparations were making to receive
Kossuth, at Southampton, where he was daily
expected iu the steamer Mississippi.
The news of the Cuba expedition created great
excitement in commercial circles.
Advices from the Cape of Good Hope were
unsatisfactory.
Great uneasiness prevailed at Vienna on the
4th.
The money market exhibited a complete panic.
The Continental news is unimportant.
New York, Sept. 22.
Cotton. —The Cotton market is quiet.
The steamer Cherokee arrived to-day, with
later dates from California. No news.
The steamer Jackson, burst her boiler at Shaw
neetown last evening, killing and scalding thir
ty-five persons.
Charleston, Sept. 23 —p. m.
Cotton.—Sales to-day, 265 bales at 61 to9i
cents. The market is depressed and prices in fa
vor of buyers.
New Orleans, Sept. 23.
Cotton.—Sales 2,000 bales. Middling is worth
8f rents.
Corn has advanced; mixed 52 cents. Whisky
20 cents.
(Eommercial.
Augusta Market, September 24.
COTTON.—Our market opened on Wednesday last
with a fair demand, at full prices; on receipt, however,
of the Europa's advices, noticing a further decliue in
the Liverpool market, buyers showed less disposition to
operate, and on Thursday the market opened languid,
buyers demanding a reduction, which was reluctantly
granted by holders. In this state our market has since
continued, gradually giving way, daily, until we have
to notice a decline from our quotations on Wednesday
of full half a cent on all qualities, and in some in
stances, we understand sales have been made at | cent
off. Yesterday there was but little demand, the few
buyers in the market offering 8} for Middling Fair lots,
but at this rate there were few sellers, most holders ask
ing 8J for Middling Fair, and refusing to sell for less.—
At present prices there is but little Cotton in the mar
ket, and prices are so unsettled that we omit quotations.
GROCERIES.—The business during the past week has
been limited. Our market is now well supplied with
every article in the Grocery line, and our Merchants are
prepared to dispose of their stocks on accommodating
terms.
BACON.—The stock is light, and the demand good.
Prices still have and upward tendency. Some holders
are now asking 12} a 12} cents cash, and 12} a 13 cents on
time, by the hlid. or larger quantity. Sides are re
tailing at 12} to 13} cents. Shoulders are worth from 10
to 11 cents, and Hams from 12} to 14 cents.
LARD. —Good Lard is very scarce and is now worth
by the keg 13 a 14 cents. A common article by the
bbl. is worth 11} a 12 cents.
BAGGING.—There is but little demand for Bagging
and it is the general remark of our Merchants, that they
have nevor had less enquiry at this season of the year.
Holders, however, are firm in their prices, and refuse to
sell by wholesale at less then 15 cents for Gunny. By
retail from stores it selling at 15} a 10 cents.
WHEAT.—Prime White is scarce and in demand at
$1,25 per bushel; good new Red sl.
CORN.—There is but a limited demand, and prices
have a downward tendency. We quote 80 aBS for feed,
and 90 a 95 for good White, suitable for grinning.
COFFEE.—Stock on hand good. We quote Rio at 9}
a 10} cents.
FLOUR. —There is a good demand for this article, and
our City Mills are kept busy. We quote superfine at
ss} a 8, and Extra Family Flour at $7 a 8 per bbl.
STOCKS. —We have heard of no sale within the past
two or three weeks, of any description of Bank Stock.
EXCHANGE.—We have no change to notice in the
rates for Northern Exchange, which continue at } pe r
cent. prem. for Sight Checks on New-York and other
Northern cities. On Charleston and Savannah our
Banks are drawing at par.
FREIGHTS. —Our river is low. We have no change
to notice in rates, which continue at 50 cents per bale
for Cotton to Savannah and Charleston. Very little
down freight offering.

LIVERPOOL COTTON MARKET.
REPORT FOR THE WEEK ENDING SEPT. 5.
Wo have no change to report this week. After
the very large amount of business lately transact
ed, it was to be expected that a cessation of buying
to a considerable extent would take placo. This
has been the case, and we have passed a week of
comparative quietness. It must not be supposed,
however, that there is any depression in price, er
abatement of confidence, in what has been done.
On the contrary, as far as we can judge, the addi
tional advicos from America arriving every week,
are giving assurance of what we stated last Friday,
namoly, that the crop would prove abundant; but
the notion that it will prove excessively large and
overwhelming is passing away. There is no altera
tion in the quotations. 2900 American, 480 Surat,
and 190 Egyptian, have been taken on Speculation;
and 2860 American, 2620 Surat, 40 Madras, 450
Pernam, and 230 Babia for export. Sales to-day
6000 bales. We have now added the error of 77,000
bales to the stock of last year, and deducted the
same amount from the consumption. Sales for the
week, 36,570 bales.
