Augusta Market, Oct. 11—p. m.
COTTON.—We havo a very quiet market to no
tice to-day. The advices from below are anything
but encouraging, and most holders refuse to sell at
what buyers are willing to give—B cents for Fair.
NEW YORK, Oct. B.— Cotton —The market has
continued depressed since the departure of the Pa
cific 27th ult. and since our last, prices of most des
criptions hare declined 1 of a cent, the stringency
of the money market, the absence of demand for
export,.the very moderate inquiry for homo use,
and the favorable prospect. of the growing crop,
combining to depress prices—they are, hewever,
still above those current at Liverpool at tho last
advices. The sales for tho week ended 4th inst.
were 4200 bales, and since our last 1500—we quote:
Inferior nominal, Low to good ordinary 7J a Bj,
Low to good middling 8J a 9J, Middling fair to fair
9 i a9 J; Fully fair to good lair 10 a—:Good and fine
Coffee. —The market continues depressed, tho
trade buying sparingly. We note sales of 360 bags
Brazil at 7J aß} cents; 250 Maracaibo, 9 a 9J: 225
Laguayra and Porto Rico, 9; 1000 Java, 11 a 11 jo;
usual time: and 500 St. Domingo. 7J a 8, cash,
which for the two latter is a trifle lower. •
Sugars. —The market has been quite dull since
our last, but in prices wc havo no change to note.
The sales include 825 hhds. Cuba at 4a 6 cents;
235 do. low grade, for refining, below 4: 100 Porto
Rico, part common, 4j a 6j ; 60 Now Orleans 6 ;
sft Dutch Crushed 7} ; 1000 bxs. Brown Havana
a 6j 4 and 6 mos.; 88 hhds. Surinam, for refin
ing, 4, cash; a cargo of 5000 bags Manilla, aQßos
ton. has changed hands, it is believed, for refining
at Philadelphia, at 4 j cents, 8 mos. deliverable in
Boston.
Molasses —Continues extremoly dull, and the
sales are unimportant, embracing only 25 hhds.
Cuba Muscovado at 23 cents; 50 Porto Rico, 28,
4 mos.; 50 Clayed Cuba, for export, equal to 17, 6
mos. duty paid; and 91 bbls. Texas, on terms we
did not learn.
COLUMBUS, Oct. B.— Cotton. —The receipt,- arc
very small—being but 780 bales, against 1580 to
tho same period last season. Prices arc so irregu
lar that wc havo to omit quotations. Stock on
hand, Oct. 4th, 1600 bales.
SAVANNAH, Oct. 11.— Cotton. —Tho markot

THE FIRE IN CON WAY MASS.
WE insert with pleasure, tho following letter
from the Conway Tool Company. It shows
olcarlv that the faith of the public in Rich's Sala
mander Safes has not boon misplaced:—
Conway, Mass. July 14,1851.
Messrs. Ross, Stearns A Co., successors to C. Rich
A Co., 146 Water street, New York:—Gentlemen—
To your inquiries respecting the fato of the Sala
mander Safe, No. 3,381, purchased of you through
Messrs. Wm. Bryce A Co., it is perhaps sufficient to
say, that I am at present writing on paper which
wa3 in the Safe at the time of tho destruction of our
manufactory by fire, on tho morning of the 27th
inst. Tho Safe was on tho lower floor of a three
story building, containing considerable quantities of
seasoned beach timber, and it was at a red heat
when it fell into a bed of live hard wood coals, in
which it remained imbedded about three hours,
when it was drawn out, and, as soon as practicable,
opened. The leather bindings of the books were
heated by the steam, and some of the loose papers
were somewhat stained: but not a single partile of
paper in any book was injured, and not a single
mark on any loose paper, whother made by a pen
or pencil, is defaced. Wo consider the Safe in
question as having passed through one of the se
verest test to which it could have been put, and wo
need not assure you teat we rejoice at its success.
Wo will forward you tho burnt Safe, and in tho
meantime, send us another of the same size and
pattern, for immediate U3c.
Yours, respectfully.

Agent.
