RrCHMOXD COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT.—O >
Friday last, the case or’ the State rs. Cnl
clough, charged with stealing a cow, was tried,
and a ter examination of witnesses and the
hearing of argument by counsel, the jure
brought in a verdict of not guilty.
Yesterday, the presentments of the grand j
jury were read, and ordered to ho published.
They will he found in our paper this morning .
Judge Hook, after the reading of the pre
sentments, addressed the grand jury, express
ing his approbation of their suggestions look
ing to the preservation of order and mjtintain
anceoflaw. In the course of his remarks he
said :
“ I think we rany safely conclude that the
President’s views and policy will soon be put
in practical operation in our rnidst, and the*
military, if kept here at all, be kept here a’
subordinate and auxiliary to the civil author
ity. Our most excellent Governor (*nd it is
the past pride of your country, gontlemon,
that it has furnished the State, at so critical a
juncture in onr affairs, so admirable an Execu
tive,) in his recent message to the General
Assembly has given us assurance that we raav
hope for this favorable change erelong, and
he is not the man to speak hastily or unad
visedly.
There was nothing ela of special interest
done.
New Music—Wo are indebted to the pub
lisher, Mr. D. P. Faulds, No. TO Main st.ree*.
between 2d and 3d streets, Louisville, Ky., for
the following pieces of now sheet music:
“Southern Girls' Polka,” by Cbas. Heller,
and dedicated to the Young Ladies of the
South.
“ Lula Bell,” a song, words by Alf. Bnmott
music by Charlie L. Ward, and dedicated to
Miss Jennie Withers. Tuskegee, Ala.
We are not sufficiently proficient in “the
concord of sweet sounds,” to express an opinion
as to the merits of these pieces, but they are
neatly gotten up, and appear to be " something
good.” They can be obtained from the pub
lisher.

The Trial op Gbn Mr-rcrr —We learn from
the Herald of Thursday that the trial of Brig
Gen. Hugh W. Mercer, charged with murder,
in shooting seven Union soldiers for attempt
ing desertion from the Confederate army, which
they had entered ns a means of escape from
prison, was resumed Thursday, after an inter
mission of several weeks, during which wit
nesses have been advertised for in the Northern
newspapers and have arrived in Savannah.
Fatal Accident.—Captain Hoffman, recent
ly employed as first officer of the steamer Sa
vannah, plying between Augusta and Sava: -
nah, was found dead on River street, in that
city, Wednesday morning. It is supposed
that while ia a stale of somnambulism he
arose from his bed and fell trom the window
to the ground, a distance of eighty feet. Toe
deceased was fifty-two years of age, leaves a
wife and three children, who reside in Jersey

City Police —lt gives us pleasure to an
nounce that the, police have succeeded in re
coYering a large portion of the goods stolen
lroni Mr. Solomon Cohen on Friday night last.
Capt. Bennett, a newly-elected officer, is en
titled to great credit for his energy in following
up the slight cua given him in the case. May
'his efficiency be a precursor of “more of the
same sort .’’—Transcript, Jan. 20ih, 1866.
Without detracting anything from the merits
of Capt. Bennett, we simply desire, in justice to
the "old police,’’ to state that our cotem
porary has been misinformed in regard to the
above transaction. It was Lieut. Johnson
who obtained the "slight cue,” and, with the
Chief of Police, Mr J. A. Christian, (both of
the ‘old police”) obtained the stolen goods
referred to. After this “slight clue” was ob
tained, and the'goods captured, Capt. Bennett
did arrest a negro concerned in the robbery,
and Lieut. M alsh also had a hand in the cap
tures. This much, we believe, is due to alt
the parties concerned ; and for this purpose only
we make the correction.
The Savannah Journal op Medicine.—We
have received from the publishers, Purse and
Sous, the January number of the Savannah
Journal of Medicine. It is highly creditable in
mechanical finish and full of pith and marrow
in the literary treatment of scientific theses
Doctors Juriah Harris, J. B. Read and J. G.
Thomas are the editors. We cordially welcome
such enterprises in our State, and recommend
this publication to professional and scientific
thinkers everywhere.
The Steamer Minnie Brandt. —We learn
from the Savannah . Republican, of Thursday,
that the steamer Minnie Brandt went down
Wednesday afternoon to the wharf at Millerhs
Foundery, in that city, for the purpose of hav
ing some repairs made to her boiler. The
work will occupy tt'e or four days, after
which she will be again placed on her rout^
Undelivered Telegraph Messages.—T, J.

Drowned —The Savannah Repnlican, of the
18th, reports that on Tuesday morning last, nt
half-past, four o’clock, while a colored deck
handtnb ard the steamer R H. May (lying
at the Charleston wharf,) was engaged in cut -
ting wood on the forward deck, he accidentally
*et! into the river taking the axe with him
The watchman of the May was near him at the
j time, and made ev°ry effort to save his life,
| but as the unfortunate man did not, rise to the
; surface, they were nnsu cesaftil. Beyond the
fact that he had Rhipprd at Augusta on the
last trip of the May, nothing further was
known regarding him or his place of residence.
Arrival or Immigrants —The Republican
notices the arrival at Savannah of a small in
stalment of thrifty and enternrising immigrants
from the North, some thirty having been sen*
ont under the auspices of the Now York Com
missioners of Emigration. The Republican
says that the new comers are intelligent and
skillful mechanics, from 26 to 40 years of age,
and among them may be found competent
members of nearly every trade, including
b'ncksmiths, carpenters, painters,wheelwrights
masons, tinsmith’, plumers, machinists; in fact
all branches of industry arc well represented.

Washington, Jan 14 —lt n.av be staled,
with reference to the recent dispatch to the
Mobile Advertiser, touching the withdrawal
of troops from Alabama and Georgia, that in
acting upon the application of Governor Par
sons, of Ala v am». for withdrawing the troops
.and for arming the local militia of the State,
General Grant has made the following reply :
“ For the present, and until there is full se
curity for equitably maintaining the rights
and safety of all clas es of citizens in the
States latelv in rebellion. I would not recom
mend the withdrawal of United States troop-;
from thence. The number of interior garri
sons might he reduced, but a movable force
sufficient to insure tranquility should be re
tained. While such a force is retained in the
Sou h, I doubt the propriety of putting arm?
in the hands of the militia.”
Washington, January 14.— Official intelli

December, has been received iri this city. Jua

States—tlio frontier States—and the politics!
leaders have all expressed their approval of the
extension of my term, and I have reason to be
lieve that the same wrl) happen in other Stak s
of the Republic.”
The French, it seems, had sent another ex*-

force, the Mexican government (Repnbhcm)
will again abandon that city and go to some
other convenient point of the Republic.

Chicago, Jan. 15.—Considerable excitement
has prevailed here of late in consequence of
the removal of bodies from the cemeteries. As

Trenton, N: J., Jan.' Is.—The inaugural
message of Governor Wade urges the adoption
bv the State of the constitutional amendment

the Legislature wilt gladly pass it. He returns

Fortress Monroe, Jan. 16 — Orders were
received yesterday from the Aar Department
to discharge all employees in the various gov

had been in any way connected with the Con

structions, the commanding general has dis
missed all such, about twenty in number, giv
ing them short notice to leave the place The
agent of the National Express Company wns
also sent away for the above reason. This
order was undoubtedly caused by the rnmor
that an organization was forming to rescue
Stff Davis. Armed picket, boats are on duty
constantly, examining all vessels arriving in
this harbor.
