the amount received for advertisements
hy the publishers of every Journal or

section of Georgia that pays this tax, and
therefore must have the largest circula

Cotton Quotations.— Those interested iu
the purchase and sale of oottou will remember
that iu Augusta the price is quoted with the
tax paid. It is the practice of, we think, all
the other inland markets of this State to give
the price less the tax. For instance —we quote
strict to good middling at 34 cents per pound,
in Macon, Albany or Columbus, as the case may
he —it will be quoted at 30@S1 cents. Add the
tax of three cents and it will bo seen that the
prices will very nearly correspond. This ex
planation we deem appropriate just at this time.
Dealers in the staple will then remember that
the buyer pays no tax on cotton in this market.
Theatre.— Frequenters of places ot amuse

Columbia aud Augusta Railroad.
Mr. Editor; In the card of William John
ston, Esq., President of the Columbia and Au
gusta railroad, which card appeared In your
paper of yesterday morning, after referring to
the publication of an extract from the charter
ot that company, in connection with a resolu
tion of Council in the Mayor’s proclamation,
that gentleman says:
His Honor, the. Mayor, has doubtless been
mistaken in quoting this extract as a part of the
charter of this company; and it is duo to him
self amt the public, as well as the stockholders,
that these facts be made known.
I desire to state that tho “quotation" allu
ded to is not mine. It is inserted in my proc
lamation by order of the City Counoil, as will
be seen by reference to tho proclamation itself,
and to the proceedings of the regular meeting
of Council of November sth, 1866.
Respectfully,
John Foster, Mayor C. A.
Mechanic Fire Company Election.
At iv meeting of this company, on Monday
night, lion. Foster lilodgctt was unanimously
elected President. After the result of the elec
tion was announced, Mr. Blodgett appeared and
addressed the company as follows :
Gentlemen of Mechanic Fire Company :
I acknowledge, with feelings of the highest
gratification, the honor yon have done me in
unanimously electing me your President.
Buch a compliment cannot be too highly ap
preciated by me, for it is an indisputable evi
dence, not only of your friendship, but of your
confidence in my capacity to aid you in .the
great and charitable objects of your organiza
tion. And doubly dear is this honor to my
heart, when I reflect that it is a renewal of the
old ties which in days past hound us together
in one brotherhood. The food memory of our
former association is green in my bosom,
thorn'll years have elapsed ; and that recollec
tion cannot be obliterated in all coming time.
I seek no prouder recognition of onr mutual
sentiments than this I so gratefully acknowl
edge. I know 1 shall never find a bond of a
more pleasant character thau that which unites
us together, nor could I look with hope of suc
cess for higher motives than those by which
you, a8 firemen, are characterized.
Let us, then, proceed in our benevolence and
usefulness with renewed zeal, harmoniously
and with well directed effort, trusting for re
ward to our own consciences and to the thank
ful hearts of those by whom we arc surrounded.
“ Resurrected.” —As we were one of the
parties, i»ays the Macon Telegraph, instrumental
in killing off our sheritf, J. Joseph Hodges,
“ will he, nil he,” we feel in duty bound to assist
in restoring him to life. He is not dead “at all
—at all,” for we had veritable proof to the con
trary yesterday in the grasp of his hand. “ Old
Joe” is looking much improved in health, and
bids fair to live to a green old age. He lias the
best wishes of his many friends to that effect.
“ May he live a thousand years.”
We helped the Telegraph in settiug aside our
old friend as “ dead matter.” We are truly
glad to hear he is “ alive.” May it be a long
time ere his form is “ locked up ” in the em
brace of death.
Melancuoi-v Occurrence.— Mr Emanuel
an old and highly esteemed merchant of Marion
C. H., fell from the platform of the back car on
the Northeastern Railroad last Saturday night.
The train was in motion, and the 6hoek of the
fall injured him so severely (some of his ribs
being broken, besides other internal injuries
received) that he died soon after. He was on
bis way home at the time, having just returned
from a visit to Charleston.
Perrt Davis’ Pain Kjli.br, as an internal
remedy, has no equal. In eases of cholic,
cummer complaint, dyspepsia, dysentery,
asthma, and rheumatism, it will cure in one
night, by taking it internally, and bathing with
it freely. It is the best liniment in America.
Its action is the magic, when externally applied
to bad sores, burns, scalds and sprains. For
the sick headache, nnd toothache, don’t fail to
try it. la short, it is a Pain Killer,

“ORDER NO. 44.”
Washington, November 13.
The delegates sent by the Mississippi Legis
lature, Messrs. Ilillycr and Lowry, to ask for
the pardon of Jefferson Davis, have not had an
interview with the President, but have sent to
him the resolves of the Mississippi Legislature,
and will to-morrow morning call upon the Pres
ident, informally, to pay their respects.
R. M. T. Hunter, of Virginia, and Com. For
rest, of the late Confederate navy, were at the
President’s house to-day urging their applica
tions for pardon.
It is understood Gen. Graut has addressed a
letter to Gen. Sheridan not to strictly enforce
order No. 44, issued July last, which requires
the arrest of persons charged with crimes and
offenses against officers, agents, citizens and
inhabitants of the United States, aud their con
finement in military custody, until the courts
are ready to try them. The object of General
Grant is to avoid all cause of complaint, now
that the civil rights bill is in loree, and the judi
cial tribunals open to all complaints.
The order has not, as has been stated, repeal
ed by General Grant or by the President or the
Secretary of War.
MESSAGE OF THE GOVERNOR OF ALA
BAMA.
Mobile, November 13.
The Governor’s message was published this
morning. The only portion of general interest
is that portion relative to the Constitutional
Amendment. After reviewing the whole sub
ject, the Governor says: I am decidedly of
opinion that this Amendment should not he
ratified, for these reasons-; The first section
embodies a principle dangerous to the liberties
of the people of the whole country and is as
applicable to New York and Massachusetts as
to Alabama. The third section would bring no
possible good to the represented States. On
the whole, it would reduce those unrepresent
ed to uttei anarchy and ruin.
We are sincerely desirous for a complete re
storation of the Union. We want conciliation,
harmony and national tranquility. We feel we
have given every evidence of an honest purpose
to conform in good faith to the condition of
things surrounding us. Alabama is as true to
day to the Constitution and laws of the Gene
ral Government as any State in the Union.
Under the Internal Revenue law tax ou cot
ton, the people of this State arc now paying a
revenue to the Government of nearly ten niil
lion dollars a year. In the enactment of those
laws we had no voice. The Amendment was
proposed when nearly one-third of the States
wepe unrepresented and all its harsh features
are aimed at the States thus excluded. Tho
ratification of such an amendment under such
circumstances canuot accomplish any good to
the eouutry, but might bring irretrievable dis
aster.
