HOW THEY 1)0 THINGS AT ST. ALBAN'S.
The services in St. Alban’s Chapel, this
morning, were of a very Interesting descrip
tion. At a quarter before 10 o’clock,morn
ing prayer was intoned by the Rector, Rev.
C. W. Morrill, and at half-past ten the
clergy and choir entered In grand proces
sions, preceded by a cross bearer and
acolytes, each clergyman wearing his sur
plice and cassock, together with the beretta
or cap, which they removed as they stood
and bowed In front of the altar, which was
covered with the purple cloth pecnliar to
the season of Lent. The Processional Hymn
was “ Forty Days and Forty Nights.”
The litany was then intoned by the Rev.
McWalter B. Noyes, the choir singing the
responses—and, nt the delivery of the minor
benediction, the clergy and the congrega
tion blessed themselves.
The clergy then retired and clothed them
selves for a high celebration, for which two
large tapers were lighted over the altar,
after which they entered again in proces
sion.
Rev. Me Walter 13. Noyes, being clothed
In a purple chasuble, the Deacon, Rev. 0.
VV r . Morrill, wearing a purple surplice HDd
scarf, and the sub-den con, Rev. ,T. Elraon
dorf, wearing the surplice and cassock with
out any ornament. Two acolytes stood in
the rear of the clergy.
After they had arrived in front'of the al
tar they again bowed, and the sixth psalm
of the psalter was sung as Introit.
The celebrant then proceeded to the east
side of the altar and commenced the ante
commumon service by Intoning the words
“Our Father," and saving the remainder of
the Lord's Prayer.
The Nicene Oreed was sung by the choir,
the first, words. “ l believe in one God" be
tug Intoned tyy -.slw <WKSV>*eott. ''Tire -rtefgy
and congregation bowed low at the, name
of “Jesus Christ,” and of the “Holy
Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life," and
very low Indeed at the words, “and was
made man.”
The Rev. 0. W. Morrell then ascended
the pulpit, and after going through the
form of blessing himself, which the con
gregation imitated, and using the formula,
“ In the name of the Father, and of the
Sou, and the Holy Ghost. Amenhe
preached from the text, “Oh 1 Lord God,
they say onto me, ‘Do not speak in para
bles.’ ”
After the sermon, the Communion ser
vice was proceeded with, the organ play
ing soft music during the reception. The
Agnus Dei was well sung during this por
tion of the service, and after the benedic
tion the clergy, acolytes and choir retired
singing the Nunc Dimities as a rec essional
Well Pct, —The Cincinnati Commercial,
of Wednesday, made a strong point on the
Congressional impeachers. It was the awk
wardness that may arise in the application
of their own measures. Tire Commercial
says of the tenure-ot-oflice law:
It must be remembered that, by the terms
of this act, Cabinet officers are to hold their
offices “ for and during the f£rm of the
President by whom they may have been ap
pointed, and for one month thereafter.”—
The construction of this language insisted
upon*by the Republican leaders of the House
is, that it means that they are to hold till
the end of the four years for which the Pres
ident was elected, and that Mr. Lincoln s
death would not give Mr. Johnson the priv
ilege of removing Mr. Stanton or any other
Cabinet officer before the 4th of March, 1869.
Let us reflect a moment how this would
work if Mr. Johnson were removed and Mr.
Wade installed in the Executive Mansion.
Suppose Seward, Welles, Stanbery and the
rest should choose to act upon Mr. Stan
ton’s principle, and decline to leave the de
partments of which they are the heads.—
Would not “blulf old Ben” find it rather
too empty an honor playing figure-head to
an administration of which each depart
ment was conducted as nearly as possible
upon Johnson’s policy ? If we repeal the
law for the sake of getting rid of the Cabi
net, we should confess that our legislation
was purely partisan, and enacted for the
sake of trapping Mr. Johnson, and not be
cause we thought it good for the country.
If we make the Senate agree to Mr. Wade’s
proposition to remove the Cabinet because
they are not in harmony of sentiment with
the new President, we shall justify John
son's desire and attempt to remove Stanton
for the same reason. Which horn of this
dilemma will be a comfortable one to be
impaled upon in the pleasant days of next
October? We venture upon the opinion
that It is much better to reflect rather care
fully upon this now than to take that leis
ure for repentance which proverbially fol
lows acting in haste.
A Wife’s Frateii.—lf there is anything that
comes nearer to the Iraplontion of Naomi than
the subjoined we have not seen it:
“ Lord 1 bless aud preserve that dear person
whom Thou hast chosen to be my busbaud: let
his file be long and blessed, comfortable and
holy; and let me, also, become a great blessing
and a comfort unto him, a sharer in all his sor
rows, a meet helper in all his accidents and
changes in the world; make me amible forever
in his eyes, and forever dear to him. Unite his
heart to me in the dearest love and holiness,
and mine to him in all sweetness, charity and
compliance. Keep me from all ungentleness,
all discontenteduess and unreasonableness of
passion and humor; and make me humble and
obedient, useful aDd observant, that we may
delight in each other according to Thy blessed
Word, and both ot us may rejoice in Thee, hav
lug our portion iu the love aud service of God
forever. Amen.”
