A Shocking Case.
4 liM msoonaii* a cestiped from heb
STOMACH.
We were iliowu yesterday, by Or. L. N.
Brace, of this city, a worm of the species known
M the centlpad, or “ thousand less,” which was,
on Tuesday last, placed In his hands for exam!
nation by Mrs. M. A. H., a most estimable
lady, of Raleigh. This worm, as It would seefia,
and we cannot doubt the statement of Mrs. 11.,
was ejeeted from her stomach the day before It
was handed the doctor, and yet more singular,
some three weeks previous she disgorged some
eight or nine “ halt” or “ earth worms,’’ which
were also preserved and submitted to the medi
cal attenduut ol the family. When shown us,
the centlpad was still partially alive—that Is to
jay, one pint ol it was alive, though dying,
~kf degreoe, a peculiarity of that specie# of the
Worm family, and a fact which must remove all
doubts as to its being one of any class of worms
existing in the human system. We. would
also add that the woi m was submitted by Dr.
Bruce to a number of fellow members of tbe
Acuity in this place, and that no one of the
number disseuted from the general opinion
that It was none other than a cetjtiped. But
how It came lu tbe stomach of tbe lady, is the
question which must puzzle those who are cog
uleant of the fact that ibis variety of thtr worm
specifies Is seldom, If ever, seen in this part of
tpt country, while the lady, by whom It was
disgorged, has not been out of the State for
many years. Dr. B. expresses the opinion that
it must have been swallowed in the larva state,
and developed lu the stomach, but then how It
survived the action and the gastric juice of that
organ mast si ill remain a mystery. We are
pleased to learn that Mrs. H. Is lu good health,
though laboting under tbe. revoltlug impres
sion that her stomach is still infected with those
venomous worms—au assurance to Uic contra
ry of which the medical profession must be but
slow to give her under the circumstances we
have related. Whatever may exist lu Lee body,
this thought lingering in her mind cannot fart
to render her llto one of constant dread and
wretchedness, until absolute conviction shall
supplant the awful apprehension. With this
simple statement of the facts, as they came to
us tbiough a channel of undoubted leliabUity,
we respectfully turn the ruse over to the doc
tors.
Rather Spicy.—A lady being invited to
Hand in a toast to be read at tiro anni versa
py celebration of the Pilgi'm Fathers,
finishes the following. It is spicy enough
to flavor half a dozen anniversary dinners:
“The ‘Pilgrim Fathers,' forsooth ! What
had they to endure in comjMmson with the
Hlgrim Mothers V It is true they liud Imn
jter, and cold, and sickness, end danger—
roes without, uud within —but the Unfor
tunate. Pilgrim Mothers! They had not
only these to endure, but they had the
>ilgvlin Fathers,‘also! and yet their names
■raiMMtr. Wm tlSfl 4s,
t.ha Pilgrim Mothers? Who ever asave a
dinner lu honor of them ? Wh<s ever writes
songs, drink toasts, and makes speeches In
In recollection of them Y This self-snffi
clfdcy of the men is beyond endurance.—
One would suppose that New England had
been colonized by men, and posterity pro
vided for by special providence.”
New Wav to Make Butter —Several
gentlemen of this city, including well
known members of the medical profession,
met yesterday by invitation in a room at
the Everett House, to test anew and won
derful process of making butter. The
method is exceedingly simple. Four aud
a half pounds of Goshen butter were placed
in an old-fashioned earthen churn. There,
Were then added four pints and a half of
pure fresh milk. Next was put in an lu
gredient of but a few ounces in weight,
nutritions and perfectly wholesome, no
compound, no drug, but a common and
cheap article familiar to every housewife.
The dasher was now vigorously worked for
fbnr or five minutes, when, presto l there
was nothing in the churn but butter! —nine
pounds of delicious, sweet, pure butter,
quite as palatable as though it had all been
(-burned from the richest cream. The ex
periment was unanimously voted a grand
sseeeas, aud the process a wonderftu dls
oorery. This mode of making butter has
been patented, and we suppose the owners
of the letters-patent will offer “ rights” for
jsale. That, however, is their business.

The following notice of Maj. Helm’s death
we copy from the Toronto Q!obe , of the 27th of
February:
Death op Majob Helm.— Yesterday morn
ing, Major Helm, a resident of this city since
the close of the American war, died at the
Roseiii House. The deceased was a native of
Hentucky, and at one time held a seat in tho
Legislature of that State. During the Mexican
war he held the position of Adjutant General
under Gen. Wool, but became best known in
bia native country while linked States Consul
General In Cuba. He occupied this post at the
breaking out of the rebellion ; and, imbued
with Southern sentiments, he took side with
there and was appointed the Consular and Fi
nancial Agent of the seceded States at Havana
In this oapaclty he rendered material aid to the
Bontheru cause during tho war. On its close
he removed to Canada, where he has 6ince re
sided. Ho was a warm personal friend of Mr.
Jefterson Davis, and during his residence lu
ibis city made many acquaintances. His re
mains will be temporarily deposited in the
vaak of St. James’ Cemetery, until removed to
Snotackj.
Homicide. —On Tuesday or Wednesday of
laai week, Mr. Edmondson, overseer on Col.
Cray's plantation In Baker county, discovering
that a quantity Qf bncou had been stolen, at
tempted to search the houses of the employees
on the place, to which some of them objected.
Mr. Edmondson then obtained the assistance
of a few neighbors and returned to the search,
hat was met by the men and told that he shonkl
not search the houses, when an altercation en
sued, which soon lead to the use of arms.
Several shots —perhaps a dozen or more—
were exchanged, killing, we ore told, one ne
gro, and severely wounding another, while Mr.
Edmondson and another white man were slight
ly wounded.
We give this statement from current report,
presuming that legal investigation wfli soon
nirnish a more particular and authentic account
Os the matter. — Albany News , 10th.
Jespsrson Davis ast> Geb. Hancock
Bioibo Out.—The Republican State Committee
of Louisiana resolved on the sth., that we are
in full sympathy with Congress in its efforts to
enforce the laws, and compel public officers,
even the President himself, to obey them ; that
the sheers which were given for Jefferson
Davis, and the simultaneous recognition of
General Hancock by the Are companies yester
day, were insulting to the flag of our country
and to the gallant soldiers who fought to defend
it; that we recommend to Congress and Gener
al Grant the immediate removal of General
Hancock ; and that we regard cheers for him
and Jessi D&vl* by tho same men »
oause of removal. General Hancock and Jet
