Artemus Ward.
Mrs. Browne, the venerable mother of
the late lamented Charles F. Browne, Esq.,
(“ Artemus Ward”) the greatest of Ameri
can humorists, is uow in this city visiting
the family of the proprietor of the Demo
crat. Within a few years past Mrs. Browne
has lost a husband and all of her children,
and has now but very few relatives living,
being nearly alone in the world, though by
no means friendless. Bhe never tires of
talking of her “ dearest son,” and those
who were as intimate with him as we were,
readily see, on acquaintance witli his
mother, that the greatest sources of his
wit and humor was a maternal one. We
have several hundred of the unpublished
letters of Artemus, which although mostly
of a private nature, arc many of them
equal if not superior to those already made
public. Mrs. Brown has also a large num
ber of his letters and other unpublished
manuscripts, all of which we propose to
give to the world, ere long, in book form.
Artemus was our friend, dear and intimate.
Wc understood him, and appreciated him.
His first attempts at lecturing were made
at our suggestion and under our aus
pices. In showman parlance, we “ brought
him out,” and it is not too much
to claim that our money and i>er
haps business tact had quite as much to do
with Ills pecuniary, if not his literary suc
cess, as did his immortal genius. He died
in England, leaving a large amount of prop
erty to his mother, and for various charita-
Jblenyrposes. This property, wc understand,
is very liable, from present appearances, to
be diverted from the purpose and uses for
which it /was intended, and to disappear,
if not dishonestly, at any rate mysteriously,
to say the least. For the sake of a mother
dependent upon it, and for the good names
qS those who haw we 'fTftT
mends ot our friend, wo hope that this is
not.so. But it is a duty which we owe to
him, and for his sake, to those lie loved best,
to probe the matter to the bottom, and we
intend to do it thoroughly. We know that
the whole literary world will aid us, and
forever hold in utter detestation the men who
seek to rob the mother of Artemus
Ward of even a penny, and if such a man
exists his name shall be made eternally in
famous. Let us have a report at once from
the English Executors. Wtiy have not the
frequent and urgent letters of Mrs. Browne
beeu answered'? Where is the property
left by Artemus Ward ? Let the answers
be prompt and explicit, and if possible sat
isfactory.
[ From the Now York Day Book.
Whipping the South.
The only thing the malignant mongrels
can offer in defense of their horrible oppres
sions is to appeal to the.hatred and revenge
of the baser sort of society, and declare that
“ the South has not yet been whipped
enough.” Well, it cannot be denied that
the South is so thoroughly “ whipped” that
both the staples of our commerce, and the
chief market for Notliern wares arc almost
entirely destroyed. We have therefore
“ whipped the South ” so thoroughly, that
we have whipped ovey 250,000 Northern
nieu and women out of employment. In
the single city of Boston 25,000 men, wo
men and children are daily fed on soup, at,
the public charge. That is what comes of
“ whipping the South.” While with capi
talists money is plenty, labor has nothing
to do, and the poor must be fed on soup to
gratify the malignant mongrels in the sweet
revenge of ,l whipping the South.” And
every day will come less employment for
the laboring classes and greater abundance
of pauper soup, while the Christian work of
“ whipping the South ” is allowed to goon.
Some years ago Mr. Seward, always a shal
low demagogue, came hack from a visit to
New Orleans, and made a speech in Ne\y
York which electrified all the fools in the
North, by showing that the South was
so helpless that it depended upon North
ern mechanics for nearly all its wants.
Going along the streets of the Southern
cities, he “ saw no hoes, harrows, plonvyiy
boots, shoes, ready-made clothing, &c., that'
were not made in the North.” This was
said as a sneer at the South, which |was
eagerly swallowed by every human ass in t he
North. But now, Seward aud his band of
malignant fools have “ whipped the South”
out of the means of buying our wares; and
in the same ratio that we have destroyed i
our Southern market we have established ;
pauper soup houses in the North. Novrif =j
Seward were to go South he would find ,
plenty of soup houses as the net result of
“ whipping the South.” And this same
tribe of Northern noodles wants toj put
government, commerce aud industry i r the
South in the hands of the negroes, which’
would ett'ecthatly prevent that section from
ever again becoming a market for our
■wares, aud would render the soup hoi se.s a
permanent institution in the North. But
how long will the poor of the North con
sent to Wffedoil soup, to gratify the i [evil
ism of the Mongrel party in “ wliippir g the
South?” If this thing goes on there will,
by and'by, be throat cutting srtmewln re.—
But it will not be the throat of the dei pauv
Jng people who are fed on soup!
