A Baby Soliloquy.— l am here. And,
if this is what they call the Avorld, I don't
think much of it. It’s a very flannelly
world, and smells of paregoric awfully.
It’s ad read fill light world, too, and makes
me blink. And I don’t know what to do
with ray hands ; I think I’ll dig my fists in
my eyes. No; I won’t. I’ll scrabble at the
corner of my blanket and chew it up, aud
then I’ll holler; whatever happens, I’ll
holler. And the more paregoric they give
me, the louder I’ll yeli. That old nurse
puts the spoon in the corner of my mouth
in a very uneasy way, and keeps' tasting
my milk herself all the while. .She spilled
snuff in it last night, and when I hollered,
she trotted me. That comes of being a two
day’s old baby. Never mind, when I’m a
mau, I’ll pay her back good. There’s a pin
sticking in me now, and if 1 say a word
about it, I’ll lie trotted or fed, and I would
rather have catnip tea. I’ll tell you w T ho I
am. T found out to-day. 1 heard folks
say, “ Hush, don’t wake up Emmeline’s
baby,” and 1 suppose that pretty, white
faced woman over on the pillow is Emme
line.
No, 1 was mistaken, lor a chap was in
here just now and wanted to see Bob’s
habv, and JookedL at me, and said I “ was a
funny little toad, and looked just like Bob.”
He smelt of cigars, and I’m not used to
them. I wonder who else I belong to.
Yes, there’s another one—that’s “ Ganma.”
Emmeline told me, aud she took me up and
held me against her soft check and said,
“It was Ganma’s baby, so it was.” I de
clare 1 do not know who 1 do belong to;
but I’ll holler, and, may be, I’ll rind out.
There comes Snuffy with catnip tea. The
idea of giving babies catnip tea when they
are crying for information ! I’m going to
sleep. 1 wonder if I don’t look pretty red
in the face ? I wonder why my hands
won’t go where I want than to.

papers. He tells the Brotherhood to take
warning from the Southern Confederacv,
and not vise in rebellion against their
rulers. Besides, argues the writer, when
the Southern States went into war they had
lull possession of their own country to be
gin with; they had regular State govern
ments in full operation, making laws and
enforcing them ; they had possession of all
their own cities, rivers, railroads, with a
fertile soil, factories, arsenals, armories,
cannon foundries; they iiad slaves to till
their ground and feed the army, and these
slaves were not a danger and weakness to
them, but a strength and support; they had
accomplished generals and naval command .
ers in their service ; lastly, their people <• ( . as
very much more unanimous than Irishmen
are, or are likely to be. All these advan
tages with which the Southern Str te ‘ s conl .
menced their struggle for Dnieper lt jence—all
ot them —are simply wanting t 0 tflls “ Irish
nation m .America-, as well
nation at home. \ ct. u itb all these advan
tages to start with, and r yitli their gallant
ry, uuanimity and reso , urces , these South
ern States were b' !;> .ten, crushed, stamped
out. r roin this y aI . Mitchel deduces a
moral, that as t v je Southern Confederacy
was crushed (] ie superior power of tlie
North, which was unembarrassed by any

if they ro, J e against England, be ground to

Something About Disraeli.— lt may be
■worth while to correct a very common im
pression that Mr. Disraeli struggled up to
his present distinction from a condition of
mean obscurity and poverty. His father
was a man of fair fortune, who enjoyed a
good position in society, and although of
shy character and a book recluse, was
sought for by eminent men, and was able
to give his son good connections, a gocK’i
education, and respectable means \v’.th
which to begin life. In his youth he spent
a good deal of his time on the continent
and was able to devote himself to political’
life, as a man of leisure, at the of 112.
lie was, therefore, not an obsce j-e or needy
adventurer, as is rather hastily assumed in
some of the press commentaries on the won
ders of his rise. ' *
It was undoubtedly a disadvantage to be
long to a race against popular preju
dices ran higli, althor jj e was not personal
ly ol the faith whi made them unpopular.
It is au liouora k) ] e trait in him, that al
though not be j{ ev i U g j n the faith of his kin
dred, or rat jier Relieving in the Old Dispen
sation to De fniiy accomplished in the New,
“ e J s P.roud of his genealogy as a Hebrew,
aUL * always defends with ardor the historic
h f mor and natural character of the Jews.—
"Vhe Disraelis were from the Venetian Ter
ritory, aud have been in England a centur’y
and a quarter.
Mr. Beecher’s Opinion op the Gen us
Yankee.— “ The lower class of a New En
gland village is chiefly composed of the
hangers-on—those who are ignorant, and
Imbecile, aid especially those who, for
want of moral health, have sunk, like sedi
ment, to the bottom. Perhaps nowhere in
the world can be found more unlovely
wickedness —a malignant, bitter, tenacious
hatred of good—than in New England.—
The good are very good, and the bad are
very bad. The high moral ‘/me of public
seutiment, in many New Fmgland towns,
aud its penetrating and»al most inquisito
rial character, either powerfully determines
men to good, or chafes ami embittert them.
This is especially true when, in certain
cases, good men are so thoroughly intent
upon public morality that the private in
dividual has scarcely r»ny choice left. Un
der such a pressure some men act in open
wickedness out of spite, and some secretly;
and the bottom of society wages clandes
tine war with the top.”
