Test Your Kerosene.—Under this housing
tho Scientific American, of the 21st infjt., in
View of the many lamp explosions resulting
almost invariably li oin the use of bad kero
sene, urges the importance of testing their oil
before use in the lamp. This, it says, may be
readily done by ahy man, woniipi or child, by
means oi a thermometer, a little warm water
and a tablespoonful of the. oil. Fill the clip
with warm water, the temperature of which is
to be brought to 110 deg. Fahrenheit. Pour
the oil on the water; apply a flame to the Hott
ing oil by match or otherwise. II the oil is
unsafe it will lake tire, and its tire in the lamp
is dangerous, for if is liable to explode. Put it
the oil is safe and good, it will not take fire.—
It is worthy of remembrance, too, that all per
sons who sell kerosene that will not stand the
tire test at 110 deg., are liable to prosecution.
We may here add that late accounts deny that
there is any truth in the assertion that salt put
in coal oii increases either tho economy or
efficiency of its use,. On tho contrary, it is as
serted with at least Tome plausibility,.that the
addition of sail to the oil could only result in
giving such a character to the llatuo as would
impart a horribly ghastly hue to the coun
tenances ol those sitting within its range.
Burning of Boifeuilt.et Mill.—At nine
o’clock last nielli Bonil'euillet’s olil mil), situa
ted in the southern part ot the city, either
caught or was Ret on Arc, and together with uu
adjoining store, was completely destroyed.—
There was a small Building on the corner and
adjoining it, which had been occupied up to
within a tow weeks ngo by Ferdinand Guttuu
burger as a retail grocery, but at the time of
the tiro was entirely vacaut.
The mill was also abandoned as such, but
had sometimes been used as a store room by
W. A. Huff, it was not known whether there
was much, or any, freight at the time of the
fire.
The property belonged to 11. YV. Boifouillet,
blit whether he had any insurance is not known
at this time. All the lire companies went to
the lire, but they could find no water until at
ter the houses werdconiplotely destroyed, when
a stream was thrown upon some small houses
in tbt> vicinity. The loss on the houses was be
tween £2,000 uni £:s,000.

ot a wry lamenYnble affair, Which bceffn'eTOim
day last week, some liltcon miles North-of Co
lumbus, somewhere in the neighborhood of
Catania post otticc. The details ot the accident
are very meagre. It seems that the woods
caught ou fire. Mrs. Baker, an elderly lady,
went out to fight the flames, to prevent their
reaching certain localities on her plantation.—
The employees were elsewhere, in her eager
ness to efiert extinguishment of the devouring
element., she approached too near. Her dress
caught, and all her clothing were quickly
burned. When found, the body was a charred
mass of flesh. It. must have remained on the
spot an hour or two before it was discovered.
Mrs. Baker was a much esteemed widow of
•ome means. Her end was a sad one.
We are told this fire caused considerable
damage to the fences in the neighborhood,
consuming five miles or more ol t hem.

On Friday, in the United States Circuit
Court at Chicago an important decision was
given by Judge Drummond, to the effect that a
witness called as an expert can compel the pay
ment of his lees as an expert, and that, too,
before he gives liis testimony. The case in
which the decision was given was that of Clark
against the city of Chicago, for injuries sus
tained by falling into a hole in the sidewalk.
Dr. Beebe was called to testify as an expert in
medical science. He refused to testily unless
lie received fees a; an export, to the amount of
f-25. The judge decided that lie was right, and
the fees were paid.
Pestalozzi, who lived from 174(> to 1827,
probably exerted more influence in favor of the
proper education of children and youth than
any other one man who has lived within tin' last
hundred years.
Every young teacher out-lit to own and care
fully persue his “ How Gertrude Teaches her
Children and every intelligent mother, his
“ Book for Mothers.” He is recognized as the
founder ot what is now known as “object
teaching,” which ia nothing more than a devel
opment of the principle that the education of a
child should proceed according to the law of
nature.
Miss Olive Logan was arrested in Columbus,
Ohio, on Wednesday, on a warrant issued by
Mayor Bull, for not having procured a city li
cense to lecture there. A city ordinance pro
vides that this is necessary, but it had not been
enforced during the past winter. Miss Logan,
pleaded her own case, aud, after paying the li
cense, left the city.
