“Whann’s Raw Bone Superphosphate of Lime.”
1 would state that in the year 18fi7 1 planted
in Barnwell district, South Carolina, and used
three tons of Whauu’s Phosphate with very
satisfactory results. 1 used, at the same time,
ou land alongside, Purs Per uvian Guano; both
yielded Well. It would be hard to say which
did the best. Other Phosphates of high char
acter were nsed by ray neighbors, but I am
satitfied that none of them produced as good
crops from the use of them as I did from the
use of Whann’s. W. M. Dunbar.

A Black Diamond —Mr. S L. Young, of
New Boston, 111., writes u« a description of a
remarkable stone, found by a soldier, during
the late war, back of Atlanta, Ga., during t!;»
seige of that city, and now in the possession of
a gentleman residing in New Boston. He says .
"“It is a stone of most curious formation, be
ing seven-eighths of an inch long, two and a half
in circumference, weighs two ounces, and has
evidently been broken at one end. The other
end has eight facits ; the sides are prismoid or
dodecabedra. It is shining black, partly covered
with a crust of a brownish color. There are
places on it that have a very brilliant natural
polish ; it resists tbe action ot the hardest file,
reducing it to smoothness in a*verv 6hort time,
and burnishing the hie as completely as the
finest emery stone would, and in much shorter
space of lime. Nitromnriatic {aqua regia) has
no action upon it. It has been immersed in
the acid for ten days without producing the
least effect. It will cut glass with the facility
of a glazier’s diamond. The end, where |bro
ken, presents a laminated appearance; not
flaky, but though it had split. . *
“ A number of lapidaries have examined it,
and pronounce it of value. A sutler, who ex
amined it, offered at once over one thousand
dollars for it; but the gentleman who owns it,
thinking, from his ignorance, that it aright be
worth much more, refused his offer, and still
retains possession of it, though I understand
he has had a number of better offers since,
which he also refused. After a careful exami
nation of it, I have very little hesitation in
pronouncing it a black diamond, worth many
thousand dollars. I &m » practical jeweler,
and have had considerable experience with val
uable stone?, and have given this one a critical
examination, and subjected it to all tests at
band. Believing it to be worthy the considera
tion of more scientific men, I have concluded
to furnish a description of the stone for the pe
rusal of the many readers of your excellent
journal, and wilt take pleasure in giving any
farther information in my power to any one
who may choose to address me ou the subject,

Below we present the report of the Board of Trade:
OFfIICE BOARD OF TRADE, (
Aogosta, Ga., Feb. 2S, 1869—P. M. S
COTTON—The week under review has evinced but
litt.e activity, since Tuesday foreign aceount6 have
constantly come cither dull or declining, hence buyers
are very cautious about taking hold, while sellers point
to rdatively small stocks throughout the /World, aui
in the face of not only light but constantly decreasing
receipts, are not willing to sell at ruling figures.
Our advices from the interior indicate a very great
reduction in the amount held on plantations, while
very much of that being marketed comes under such
restrictions as wi'l prevent sdes, unless there is quite
a favorable re-action ill prices.
The subjoined remarks indicate the daily fluctu
ations.
On Saturday morning sales were on the basis of 26*
@26* for middling, but afternoon Liverpool accounts
brought an increase of sales over the morning’s esti
mate ; this, of itself, although without change of quo
tations, pointed to a renewal of faith, and our market
strengthened, closing at 27.
On Monday there was a general advance, and a fair
demand here at 27*c., closing with holders asking
28 cents.
OH Tuesday Liverpool evinced activity, ami sales
were made here at 28 cents hut buyers generally were
not willing to pay over 27 *c.
On Wednesday this market opened quictat tho pre
vious day’s quotations, but in respo.ise to declining
accounts soon gave way aDd during the day ruled nomi
nal at 27*0.
Yes'erday there was very little'demand, but with
only limited offerings, sellers were unable to obtain
27* cents for fall middlings.
To-day the market opens quiet, the offering stock is
small bpt with a light demand. Middling are not
quotable over 27 to 27 *c.

THE AUTOMATIC CLOTHES WASHER
AND BOILER.
Th.S most nzeful invention has been introduced
into this city by the undersigned, who guarantees tho
performance of all that is claimed for it. The cost is
comparatively trifling—BlX DOLLARS when is
considered the amount of time, money and labor saved
by its use.
This Boiler operates upon purely philosophical prin
cipl s.
It is self-acting, and dispenses cntirolv with labor
and the wear of clothes.
Tho hot suds and steam, by the action of fire, ate
driven up through tubes, poured upon the clothes,
and forced through the fabric with astonishing rapid
ity, cleansing it perfectly without any rubbing. It has
been thoroughly tested, and pronounced unequaled as
a Clothes Washer by those who have ueed it.
All fabrics, from the finest laces to the bed blanket,
can be washed perfectly and with ease, without the
aid of the mbhing-board. For Flannels it is invalua
ble, as the rubb ng, rolling and pressing process must
necessarily full them more or less.
It is truly a labor and clothes saving invention.—
Wishing will no longer be a hardship, and washing
day no longer a terror and a dread to housewives.
The invention can be used in any boiler, and th
low price of the ar’icle places it within the reach of
every family.
The saving In the wear of clothes will very soon pay
for the outlay.
It is estimated that 2‘K) to 300 gallons of boiled suds
pass through the clothes in thirty minutes; this being
the longest time required for e'eausiug a boiler full of
clothes.
I refer, confidently, to the following named gentle
men, who have seen the and
