WEDNESDAY MORNING. NOV. 3, 1869
[Correspond' nee of the Constitutionalist.
The Wilkes Tournament.
Mr Editor: The sraml ton rna.nent
which was advertised to come off here on
30th ult., was ah entire success. We can
say that the Wilkes Knights did well. The
first prize—a fine horse—was won by
Thos. Hill, of the count}', son of Col. Hill ;
and the saddle and bridle—the second
prize—was won by our townsman, John
Fitzpatrick. Mr. B. S. Irwin, before the
Knights began their coutest, made an ap
propriate address, which was well receiv
ed, anil was indeed an honor to the orator,
coining, as it did, from one so young. The
occasion passed off delight fully, with many
amusing incidents. The clown, an addi
tion which the young men added to the en
tertainment for the benefit of the numerous
little folks, was witty, and did his part full
just ice. We think a variety on such an
occasion adds much to merriment and en
joyment. ,
Tuere was quite an audience of ladies
present with their bewitching smiles and
with ali the perfection of costume that adds
to the beauty of nature. There was, iu
deed, pains-taking with the fair sex on this
occasion. They were all, no doubt, eager
to lie pronounced the beauty of the day by
being honored with the crown of a queen,
as most women like the title of beauty and
are great admirers of the beautiful. The
crowning of the queen and her maids of
honor was, we believe, the most delicate
part of the programme. The brave Knights
faltered in step as they looked around, with
eager eye, to select from that vast assem
blage tlie beauties of. them ail; and then,
when they espied them and brought them
forth and escorted them upon the Judges’
stand, and with uplifted hands took from
their heads those tiny little bonnets, plac
ing instead the beautiful crowns, one could
see that the knighthood felt it more than
spear in hand eager for the prize. Wilkes
was not fortunate enough to be honored
with the prettiest of the “ fair " —the queen
—but gave the maids of honor, whose
charms were none the less apparent. Miss
Philo Casey, of Columbia county, was
crowned as queen; Miss Lettie Pope, of
Washington, 6a., and Miss Sallie Hill, of
the county, were crowned as her maids.
We noticed that General Dußose, Judge
lteese and others of note took a decided in
terest iu the affair, which was an encour
agement, and added much to the zeal and
noble bearing of the knighthood.
There is some talk of another tourna
ment. at an early day in Wilkes, with a far
heavier prize, which will, no doubt, eclipse
the first in horsemanship and valor.
Ancient.
Washington, Ga., October 30,1869.
Sad Accident. —We regret to learn that
on Saturday night, as Crawford W. John
son, who was acting as train hand on the
Western and Atlantic Railroad, was en
deavoring to get on the cars at Vining’s
Station, he lost his hold and fell between
the cars. One leg was cut off above the
ankle and the. other mangled above the
knee, rendering amputation necessary. He
is now lying at the Kenuesaw House, Ma
rietta, and it is feared that he will not sur
vive his injuries. Mr. Johnson was for
many years an Express messenger, and was
highly esteemed for his many excellent
qualities. We deeply sympathize with his
devoted wife and interesting family, and
trust that they will, in the midst or their
grief and sorrow, look to Him from whom
help cometh.— Atlanta Constitution.
Terrible Disaster to an Emigrant
Ship. —The disastrous report by cable that
the emigrant ship Weiser, with 346 souls
on board, foundered at sea in July last, is
creating intense excitement among the Ger
man residents of New York. At least two
thousand people are in a state of indescriba
ble anxiety this evening, almost every one
of them claiming some relative on board
the ill-fated vessel. The dispatch was re
ceived at such a late hour that inquiries at
the consignee’s office foiled to elicit further
details; but any number of dispatches ask
ing for further information have been sent
by cable, replies to which are anxiously
looked for in the morning.
Some boys in Cincinnati stole the bowels
of a hand-organ which belonged to a min
strel who was stone-deaf. The next morn
ing he took hls place and grbnnd away as
gaily as ever, producing, of course, no andi
ble result. The by-passers appeared to like
that sort of thing, and contributed so libe
rally that the troubador divined that some
thing must be wrong. Investigation dis
closed his loss, but the unexpected pecunia
ry favor with which bis outbreak of silence
was received inclines him to let the in
testines of the thing go and ran the shell
for awhile.

OF THE AGE.
Hurley’s Ague Tonic.
NO ARSENIC—NO MERCUHY.
PERFECTLY RELIABLE.
The only remedy for Chills and Fever, or Ague and
Fever, that is or can be depended upon is HUR
LEY’S AGUE TONIC. There have been thousands
cured by using it who have tried tho usual remedi s
without benefit.
The following certificate from a reliable citizen of
Mississippi speaks for itself:
Meridian, Miss., Oct. IS, 1868.
Mr. U. Y. R. Chadwick :
DjsabSib: This is to certify that I bought from
you, by your recommendation, a bottle of Hurley's
Ague Tonic, aud it cured two cases of fever and ague
of ttftecu months’ standing. I cheerfully recommend
Hurley’s Tonic to the public generally.
Respectfully, yours, JOHN B. WRIGHT.

afflicted. I was *o reduced that it was with Ihe great
est difficulty that I c iuid walk. I procured some of
your Compound Extract of Sarsaparilla, and com
menced tatting it. I found that I began to improve—
mv cough became less severe—the soreness of my
lungs and breast, gradually subsided—my rheumatic
pains less acute. 1 attribute this mainly to your Sar
saparilla. I have now been taking it for over two
months; have taken in all live bottles. It* effect*
have been most satifactory to me, and I advise others
similarly afflicted to give you a trial.
