FRIDAY MORNING. DEO. 1?, 1869
Whf.rk the Shoe PiNCHES.-*-If the
writer of the following had been wearing
equally binding boots on his financial
corns, he could not have more nccurately
expressed the reason of the sufferings of a
large class of business men in the South.
He says : The men who complain most of
the depression of business, will, many of
them, at least, find if they examine their
ledgers that the volume of their sales for the
year is about as large as the average of for
mer years, and that the cause of complaint
is not so much a want of buyers and of
payers, too, as a want of economy In living.
It is tiie enormous expenses of living which
swallows up not only ordinary profits, but
even a moderate capital with it, in the
struggles for life. The fact is being gradu
ally appreciated that taxes mean something
more than the sum paid to the receiver
once a year. Every article of food and
raiment, every necessity, comfort or luxury,
every hour’s service rendered us by any one
else, are all raised to an unwonted altitude
by the common burden. To undue taxa
tion is to be added the disadvantage of a
depreciated currency, which inevitably en
courages extravagance.
A Model Paulou Magazine. —For
beauty of typography, artistic engravings
and high-toned literary articles, together
with a large and beautiful display of the
fashions, Demorest's Monthly Magazine is
certainly unsurpassed. The January num
ber, just received, in addition to unusual
holiday attractions, has a fine steel portrait
of both Mr. and Mme. Demorest. The rich
display of novelties offered in Demorest's
Monthly would seem to be enough to secure
a circulation sufficient to satisfy its pub
lishers, but, in addition, we see they pro
pose to give a very large and fine engraving
to each subscriber, valued at $lO. The en
graving alone would make a very appropri
ate holiday or birthday gift; but when add
ed to the costly picture the best parlor
magazine is included, to be a monthly re
minder of the friendly feeling giver,
there is certainly no better way of investing
$3. Address Demorest's Monthly , 838 Broad;
way, New York.
A Model of Patience.—A captured
paragraph states that the “ most patient
man ” of modern times has been found in
Washington. After being deluged with
the contents of a slop-bucket emptied from
a third-story window, he kept on his way
without making any display of anger. We
should recommend that Congress grant
him a medal as the Job of the times, were
we not morally certain that he is not a
major general in the United States army,
and that he had no soldiers at his back to
execute martial law on the premises. They
do not display any such triumphs of for
bearance under like ihdignities. Try him
with those implements, if you would sec
him fqme, and strut —and he \yill
pot be very particular as jo what he swears,
either.
Floral and Horticultural Magazine.
—The December number of Tilton's Journal
of Horticulture and Floral Hfugasine has
peached us. Jt closes the si*th vqlume.
This attractive and useful monthly is pub
lished by J. E. Tilton & Cos. Price, f 3 per
annum. Their offices are at* New York,
201 Fulton street, and at Boston, 161 Wash

ter and almost rises to the dimensions of a
book. It is embellished with numerous en
gravings.

To Jos. Saddle <t Cos., Louisville, Ky.:
Gkntlehih : This is to certify that I have been for
years a sufferer, and tried all the tonics I have heard
of or Bren advertised, with little or no relief from any
of them. 1 heard Hurley’s Bitters highly spoken of,
and tried a bottle, with little faith in it before I com
menced, and, to my sarprise and joy, before I finished
one bottle 1 felt a great deal better, and firmly believe
that one or two occasions it was the means of saving
and prolonging my life. I conscientiously recommend
them to all sufferers as the best Bitters known, and
advise them always to ask for Dr. T. A. Hm ley’s, and
have no other. You con use this aj you think proper,
if it will benefit others.
Yours, truly, etc.,
JOHN W. DIXON.

Thos. A. Burley:
bib : I deem it an act of justice to you to state that
in the month of February last 1 had a severe attack
of inflammatory rheumatism, whioh completely pros
trated me. At the same time my luugs were much
afflicted. I was so reduced that it was with the great
est difficulty that I could walk. I procured some of
your Compound Extract of Sarsaparilla, and com
menced taking it. I found that I began to improve—
my cough became less severe—the soreness of my
lungs and breast gradually subsided—my rheumatic
pains less acute. I attribute this mainly to your Sar
saparilla. I have now been taking it for over two
months; have taken in all five bottles. Its effects
have been most satifactory to me, and I advise others
similarly afflicted to give you a trial.
