A revival is progressingiit the Methodist
Episcopal Ohureli at, Columbus.
A letter from Banks county to the
Athens Banner says the corn crop in that
county is very large—“enough to sell and
to keep.”
Mr. Charles 11. Elyea, an old and popu

and Atlantic Railroad, died Friday morn
ing in Atlanta.
Thu Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta
Railroad is now shipping to Schofield's
rolling mills, Atlanta, large quantities of
railroad iron bars twisted and bent bv the
forces of General Sherman, to bo re-rolled.
In Wilkes count y, a few days ago, a negro
in tl>e employ of Mr. James Wright, dug
into the head of another negro with a hoe.
The soil was softer than expected, and the
proprietor o( the head, it is thought, will
die.
Mr. H. T. SheWer, of Wilkes county, at
tempted to commit suicide, a few days
since, by taking a rather unhealthy dose of
laudanum. Friends, by prompt efforts,
rescued him, after lie had yielded to the in
fluence of the drug.
On Monday last a negro child between
one and two years old, was burned to death
on the plantation of Col. J. T. Henderson,
near Covington, while her father and
mother were enjoying a conjugal qndvrel
in another part of the quarter.
A gentleman and his wife, named Clawke,
residing near Catoosa Springs, says (the
North Georgian, hearing a considerable dis
turbance among the chickens on Tuesday,
went into the yard and discovered that, a
frog of mammoth proportions had invaded
a family of “ small fry.” The amphibious
monster was slain, when a post mortem
examination discovered a pair of these
feathered young ones was found nicely en
sconsed in his frogship’s “meat basket,”
having gone in thither doubtless by the
“power of suction.”
Destructive Fire in Cuthbert---Oftice of
the Appeal Burned.
Cuthbert, Ga., August 11,1870.
Editors Telegraph and Messenger: The
large establishment of Col. H. 11. Jones was
burned last night. The buildings, extensive
stock of goods, office and appurtenances of
the Cuthbert Appeal —all consumed. It is
next the block lately destroyed. By the.
extraordinary exertions of the firemen,
under Capt. Lehman, the conflagration was
arrested.
The Appeal makes an unexpected and sad
adieu to its readers and exchanges.
Savannah, Griffin and North Ala
bama Railroad. —We are informed that
the track of this read is completed from
Griffin to within six miles of this place, and
that the work of grading keeps steadily
ahead of the track layers. But a few more
weeks and this road will be finished to this
point. The active superintendent of the
Savannah, Griffin and North Alabama
Railroad, L. Kendrick, Esq., has arranged
to open the road for passengers to this
place, to go into operation on to-day. The
cars rnn to North’s, eight miles from here,
and the connection is completed by first
class four horse coaches, making close con
nection at North’s. The fare is fixed at
the very low rate of #2 from Newnan to
Griffin ; the trains also make close connec
tion with the trains of Macon and Western
Railroad, at Griffin. As the track is laid
the staging will be shortened.
