Tga.BKiaitaT Jump pis Record —A
Jumpingifiafen came off at Binghamton,
on Saturday, between Ned Searles, of Sing
Sing, and Bob Way, of Olean, for SSOO a
side and the championship of America.—
There were to be ten trials of a single
jump each, spirit level. Matt Ryan and E.
D. Davis were the judges, and trusting
Campbell was referee. Searles toed the
mark, and, with an pasy spring, covered
12 feet 10>£ inches. Way then threw him
self out, and covered 12 feet 11% inches.
Betting was hrisk. On the third trial,
Searles gave a tremendous spring and
cleared 13 feet 2 inches. It, is the longest
jump on record, in the world, and was fol
lowed by prolonged cheers. It caused Way
to lose heart. After one more trial, on
which he cleared but 12 feet 7 inches, he
refused to proceed and declared himself
beaten. —New York Sun.

A remarkable physiological discovery
has been made regarding the properties of
marrow. M. Gon}on has won the prize of
500 francs, granted by the French Academy
of Sciences, for demonstrating that the mar
row of bones has the same power of repro
ducing bony substance as the periosteum—
that engrafted elsewhere in the body it pos
sesses the extraordinary quality of repro
ducing bones, as the author showed in a
rabbit, in which bone had been made to
grow under the skin by the transplantation
of some of the animal’s marrow.
Mr. Wright, of Floyd county, who has
