Mr. E, A. Wermer has been appointed
freight agent of the Georgia Railroad at
Atlanta.

Brad. T. Chapman, for years largely en
gaged in planting and other business in
■Georgia and Alabama, died at his planta
tion, in Russell county, Ala., on Tuesday.
Mr. Calvin Stratten, for many years a
resident, and for ten years, consecutively,
■Clerk of the City Counc 1 of Columbus,
died at his residence, in Auburn, Ala., on
Monday last.
Mr. Wm. H. Join s, who lives near Co
lumbus, has shown the Enquirer a large
size hen's egg, with a perfectly fori bed
pullet’s egg within it. Tfie inner shell was
as hard and? firm as ihe outer one.
A smash-up of a freight train on the
Southwestern Railroad occurred within

Southern Commercial Convention.
Ex-President Fillmore, President, and
Charles M. Thruston, Secretary, have issued
a formal call for the Southern Commercial
Oonveution to convene in Cincinnati next
October. The call is as follows :
“In conformity with the resolve of the
Southern Commercial Convention at the
meeting held in Louisville, Ky., October
12,1869, the annual session of the Conven
tion will 1)0 held at Cincinnati, Ohio, com
mencing Tuesday, October 4,1870. Com
mercial bodies, municipal and other cor
poration-, and all other interests entitled
to representation in the Convention, are re
quested to appoint delegates in accordance
With the basis of representation adopted at
the session of the Convention held at Mem
phis, Tenu., May 18, I860.”
Murder in Alabama.— Mr. David C.
-Compton was killed by Henry Mayo, near
New Site last week. It appears that pre
vious to the occurrence Mayo was guilty
■of improper conduct at the house of Oomp
vtott for which he had been reprimanded by
Compton. On the day of the killing Mayo
went to the field where Compton was plow
ing and struck him two blows with a guu,
feihim to the ground aud inflicting
from which he died in a few hours.
Mayo made *»■ escape, and was at large at
last accounts. “ ■
John H. WanL a .sojourner at the Hot
Springs, Arkansas, was and hilled at
that place, on Wednesday, 1 < Ml instant, by
Dr. Koode, formerly of Memphis, Tennes
see. Ward Is a brother of Zeb Ward, of
Nashville. He was shot whilst parsing
Dr, Knode’s office. It is said that Ward
had threatened Dr. Knode’s life because
the latter had attended and dressed the
wounds of a son-in-law of Ward’s, whom
Ward had shot a few days previous, during
an affray which grew out of some family

Annlegate, Lieutenant Governor of Alar
-batna, died in Mobile on Monday, after a
