of cotton, and the crop is now doing well.
A portion of the police force of Savannah
have been detailed by the Mayor to take
the census of that city.
Mr. W. S. Spiers, of Buffalo, New York,
will shortly establish a railroad ticket
printing office In Atlanta. His business
will be confined entirely to railroad tickets.
The Savannah registry list has closed
with two thousand six hundred and forty
voters registered, "gainst four thousand

A Savannah merchant proposes to im

to think, when eating a turnip, that we are
having a relish of a Pharaoh or a Ptolemy
in it, and that the fair Cleopatra, of pearl
swallowing notoriety, should be swallowed
by us, gem and all, in next year’s mutton
corn.
The Democracy of Effingham county at
a recent meeting resolved, that the people
of this county are opposed to the reckless
ness of the present Legislature in reference
to “ State aid," and we pledge ourselves
sustain or vote for no men as our Represen
tatives unless he favors the strictettebono
my on every department of the State gov

Bridge Burned.—The railroad bridge
between Shelby Springs and Columbiana,
Alabama, was burned on yesterday. It is
supposed that the bridge was set on fire, as
there was no covering of any kind on it
and the planks underneath were covered
with metal to prevent such an accident.—
Hands are now at work rebuilding, and
will have the trestle work completed by to
morrow, so that trains can pass over it.
