WEDNESDAY MORNING. AUG. 31,1870 1
Another Insurrection of Armed Negroes.
■ a force of about 20() negroes, armed with
muskets, rifles and piste's, collected in the
vicinity of Brown’s Station, below Dawson,
in Terrell county, and about 11 o’clock
marched up to the Slation, stacked arms,
and called for whisky, which was refused.
The avowed object of this insurrection try
movement is to avenue the maltrentment,
Monday evening, by six lawless men, of
a negro who had badly cut a white man
name! Tucker. They put him on a log
over Kinehafoona creek, and, as reported,
shot him and left him for dead. The negro
got out, however, and was along with the
mob at the Station ; and his wife had kept
him concealed to excite them the more.
“ The Sheriff of Terrell county went down
from Dawson to investigate the matter.—
The negroes dictated to him, and (heir
ultimatum was that they would remain
underarms until the six white men were
arrested and put in jail, and then they
should satisfy themselves of the fact, by
being admitted to see them. The Sheriff
having bnt a small posse was unable to do
anything, and reasoning with them was
like ‘ casting pearls before swine.’
“ Judge Harrel and several prominent cit
izens of Dawson also went down to try to
pacify them, but ineffectually. From the
same direct and rteliable source from which
the foregoing is given, we also learn that
an armed body of two hundred white men
are in the vicinity, watching their move
ments, and unless the negroes yield a con
flict is certain. Capt. Bass, of the South
western Railroad, and passengers, saw
them yesterday evening at the station,
went among and reasoned with them, but
they seemed determined to prosecute their
purpose. They were generally very quiet,
and had committed no depredations, but
some threats were made that they would
have whisky anyhow, and couldn’t stand a
refusal much longer.
“ It was reported that the mob had sent,
or telegraphed, to Gov. Bullock for assist
ance. This bold, lawless insurrection on
the part of these negroes should be sup
pressed, and the last one arrested at all
hazards; and the law should take its
course also towards the sis mpn who shot

the purpose of doing “ the week’s wash

other three at the house. While engaged
at her work she heard suppressed screams
at the house; taking up her little child
from the soiled clothes on which it

to keep it from crawling into the creek du

house, where she met her eldest child with
its head frightfully disfigured and swollen.
She hastily gleaned from this one that the
