THE FAIR.
LAST DAY.
AWARDING PREMIUMS.*
CLOsflWWpfel
THE FAIR PRONOUNCED A SUC
CESS BY ALL.
Notwithstanding yesterday was the last
day of the Fair, there was a large con
course present to witness the exhibition of
horses, the award of pfmfiattts and the
closing races.
Although the number of horses paraded
was not so great as was desirable, the
quality was such as to elicit the unqualified
admiration of the spectators, and render
very difficult the performance of the duties
of the Judges in awarding the premiums.
Noticeable among some of the most beauti
ful specimens of horse flesh we have ever
seen were the horses of Gen. Haygood, of
Mouth Carolina, and the gelding of
Capt. Frauk Arnold of Wilkes
Georgia. It was late in the forenoon
before the several departments were pre
pared with their premium lists, eon
sequently the award of premiums was
delayed. *The great interest taken in this
portion of the .exy cises wao manifested by
the great number of ladies aud gentlemen
occupying the Grand Stand, and the pa*
tience with which they submitted to the
delay.
After the races, an account of which will
be found elsewhere, Cli t people dispersed,
all highly pleased, and unanimous in ex
pression of opinion that the' First Annual
Exhibition of theCotlou States Mechanics’
and Agricultural Fair U a de
cided success.

Elegant Clothing — Among the most
creditable displays at our Fair, that of Mr.
August Dorr was conspicuous for elegance
and utility. His specimens of superb and
substantial home-made wearing apparel
extorted the admiration of all and we can
say, with perfect truth, that no better
clothing could be found any where. The
Judges of the Fair seemed to be of the same
opinion and awarded two premiums to Dorr
as a public recognition of his perfection in
the draper’s art. With exquisite taste,
llrst rate facilities,’a thriving trade, and
two premiums from our Fair Association,
what is there to prevent Dorr from claim

Girabdet’s night
the Ravel-Martinetti troupe gave their
farewell performance in this popular place
of amusement. The house was not so fall
as usual, but this is accounted for by the
fact that thousands of visitors had.left the
city, and nearly all our play-goers wcie
completely worn out with the labors and
pleasures of the week. The great success
of these deserving artists during their en
gagement is ample proof that tjieir efforts
have been duly appreciated, aud should
they see dt to visit ns again they may feel
sore of a warm and substantial welcome.

We, the undersigned members of Fillmore,
No. 4, protest against the decision of the
Judges in awarding the prize for the rim
between the steamers to Vigilant, as the
Fillmore made the time in one minute and
twenty-four seconds, making connection
with the pipe, which the Vigilant failed
to do.
We also protest against the action of the
Judges in ruling the Fillmore out of four
minutes’ time; and we further protest that
it was wrong to give the other steamers
ten minutes time while ihe Fillmore was
allowed only six.

li/done a very great injustice to the Knights
For instance, “ Democracy,” “ LoclilhVar •’
and “In Black” each score 21 points, and
were disposed of by drawing, giving to
“ Lochinvar” and “Democracy” the honors
of crowning Second and Third Maids of
Honor. “ WiW IrisWman ” makes a total
of 19 points. He should have been, accord
ing to the rules of the Tournament, ruled
out, but had the honor of crowning the
First Maid of Honor; and “Roan," who
makes a total of 20 points, got no honors
whatever.
“White Plume,” “Rob Roy” and “Hamp

“Southern Cross” comes in for a prize
upon the fastest time, muking 20 points ,

makes 12.
