Weekly Review of the Markets
The first of October is considered the
beginning of anew, business year in this
latitude. The past week has been the
opening week. Cotton has been pouring
in incessantly, ami the impetus given to
trade is acknowledged.
The stocks of business houses, ns a
general thing, have been received in full
and will be found complete. Our mer
chants have purchased liberally, both of
dry goods jmd groceries. The money mar
ket has been close, blit is now in a health
ier state owing to the influx of cotton.
Gold,.is buying at 110, Silver 135, the
■quantity changing hands, however, is
very small, and quotations a little more
than nominal.
The cotton market has displayed con
siderable activity, with some fluctua
lions in the past day or two. On Mon
day it opened brisk, with a good de
mand from many buyers. Under the
competition and news from abroad,
quotations advanced on the first of
the week, until about the middle
they were rather in advance, compara
tively of the markets elsewhere. A
slight decline or tendency toward de
cline was the natural result, which how
ever, has had little more effect than to
render the market easy. The quantity
brought to market Is about an average
of one hundred bales per day. The
quality of the cotton is generally about
Middling. We quote Ordinary 31c.,
Middling 32c. The number of hales re
ceived during the neck was COO. —
The Bagging and Bopeon hand is about
£OO bales.
The grocery market lias been, and con
tinues steady and firm. Sales have been
heavy during the past week. For quo
tations we refer to the priee current in
another column.
In the dry goods business there lias
been a revival corresponding to that in
other branches, and the daily sales foot
up amounts approximating the oft men
tioned “before the war times.” Through
the week the business has been active,
brisk, closing Friday rather beyond the
average.
The health of the city is unprecc
clently good.
Country Merchants will do well, to
call at Waxkebatjm & Bro. Where
they will find the largest stock of goods
in the market which are sold at low
figures lower than the lowest.
Oet. Oth. 11.
is a paradox that loose habits
generally stick tighter than any other
kind.
That is even so. A drunken young
mem will get drunk again, and a foolish
young lady will marry him, certain.
CJspMf ladies appreciated the beauty
of their feet as they do that of their
necks, shoulders, &c., they would proba
bly go to balls barefoot.
That is an unquestionable truth, if we
take the denuded condition of the two
former into consideration, which are, in
many instances, as bare asyjour hand!
BgsSuA man who boasts of his contempt
of life should reflect that others have
probably a greater contempt for his life
than he has.
For instance Old Brownlow and Boast
Butler must have a contempt for their
lives, and we are sure that everybody
else has.
any men are willing to express
their admiration for a principle in every
possible way, except by living up to it.
That is a common procedure, very, on
the part of many men. They are always
expressing a very high admiration for a
principle, hut not a hit of it do they
carry out in their detcstible lives!
