Female Compositors.—The lucid
and Fireside, published at Ealeigh, N.
C., has all its types set by female com
positors. Speaking on the subject, the
F. and F. says:
The ladies employed in this office are
some of tire many m the South upon
whom the disasters of the war fell with
a heavy hand. They are all well educa
ted and accomplished and belong to
as good families as any in this city. At
four o’clock their day’s duties end, they
then go home to dinner, arc ready for
an afternoon walk or a call; and we
doubt not that many a young gentleman,
who, desiring an eVening among bright
eyes, pretty faces, good music, etc., ib
often astonished (if not made to feel
bad by bis own lack of posting) at the
thorough familiarity which these ladies
evince in all matters pertaining to
current literature. He doesnot trouble
himself to ascertain how and where
they read so much; it is enough for him
that they can lead him in conversation
upon any topic.
We regret that any journal of respec
tability of the South should urge or
give countenance to the unfortunate
practice of employing females in print
ing offices, or indeed in any business
which alienates thcnl from their sex.
We do not sanction the idea of drawing
woman from her appropriate sphere in
life, and certainly that is not her sphere*
a printing office. It was never intend
ed that she should break loose from the
quiet and domestic pursuits of home
and be forced to seek employment in
the various mechanical enterprises of
the day. That is man’s work and his
alone; and it is till lionseiise to assume
that there is any lack of males to fill up
these places. We sec in every town
and city scores of idle young men,
without any apparent, source of living,
but who dress fine and wait on the
ladies, who ought to enter our printing
offices and other departments of me
chanical Industry, and thus do the
i work which now seems to be exacted
of tire softer sex. ,a.

A New and Grand Epoch in Medicine.—Did
Maggiel is ihe founder of new’Medicine System !
Tiie quantitaiians, whose vast internal doses en,
feeble the stomach and paralyse the bowels,
must■ «ive precedence.to the mm who restores
health and appetite, with from one to two of hi a
extraordinary Pills, and cures the most virulent'
sore with a box or so cf his wonderful and alii
healing salve. These two great specifics of the
Doctor are fast superceding all the stereotyped
nostrums of the day. Extraordinary cures by
Dti - . Maggiel’*" Pills and Salve have opened the
eyes of the public to the inefficiency us the (so
called) remedies of others, and upon which the
people have so long depended. Maggiel's Pills
are not of the class that are swallowed up by
the dbeen, ami of which every box full taken
creates an absolute necessity for another. One
or two of Maggiel’s fills suffices to place the
bowels in perfect order, tone the stomach, cre
ate an appetite, and render the spirits light and
buoyant. I here is no griping, and no reaction
in the form of constipation. If ilia liver is af
fected, its functions are restored ; and if the
nervous system is fetb.e, it is invigorated* This
last quality makes the medicines very desirable
for the wants of delicate females. Ulcerous and
tuuptive diseases are literally extinguished by
the disenfectaut power of Maggiel’s Salve. Iu
fact, it is here announced that Maggiel’s Bilious,
Dyspeptic and Diarrhoea Pifts cure where all.
others fail. While for burns, scalds, chilblains,'
cuts and all abraisins of the skin Maggiel’s Salve
is infallible. Sold by J. Maggiel, New York,
