B. ROSS & SO*, Wholesale Grocery and Dry Goods Dealers, 65 Second and 96 Cherry Streets, sept MACON, GA- “Wliolo I\To. 160. BPS*. There is in Pekin a •‘House with Chicken Feathers,” where houseless vaga bonds may sleep for one mill (the tenth part of a cent) a night. In an immense hall the floor is covered two or three feet with chick en feathers The customers are introduced into this hull and take the first place they can find ; they disappear in the feathers aa if they were in water. All ages and both sexes lie pell-mell together. Over this downy bed hangs a canopy as large as the naif itself; the canopy is made of felt and is perforated with as many oval holes as tho hall may contain sleepers. When the hour is struck for the closing of doors the cano py is lowered to the floor. Every sleeper hastens to thrust his head through in order to breathe fresh air and escape being suffo cated by the feathers. At the hour of ri sing a gong sounds and each sleeper pulls his Lead out of the hole to avoid being stran gled by the canopy, which is pulled up to the celling by blocks and pulleys. Tins se cures the waking of all tho lodgers. They then go to the office and pay their mill fjr their night’s-lodging. A Story with a Moral.— A young man payiug special attention to a young lady, met with the following incident du ring one of his visits : Being invited into the parlor to await the lady’s appearance, he himself as best he might for some time, and was becoming weary, when a little girl about five years old slipped in and began to con verse with him. “I can always tell,” she said, “when you aie coming to our house.” “FouT’ he replied,‘‘and how do you tell it r J “Why, when you are going to bo hero sister begins to sing and get good, and she gives me cake and pie, and any thing I want, and when 1 speak to her she smiles so pleasantly. 1 wish you would stay here all the while, then I would have a good time. But when you go off, sister is not good. She gets mad, and if L ask ler for anything, she slaps and’bangs me about.” 'lbis was a poser for the young n:an, “Fools and children toll the truth,” i-pio ted he; and taking his hat, lie lift and re turned no more. Moral.—Parents wishing their ill matur ed daughters married, should keep their small children out ot the parlor when strangers arc there. Arab Oddities. —An Arab, entering a bouse, removes his slices but not bis hat. He mounts his horse upon tho right side while bis wife milks their cows upon the left side. With him, tho point of a pin is its head, while its head is made its heel. His head must be wrapped up warm, even in summer while his feet may well enough go naked all winter. Every a t ele of mer« chandise which is liquid he weighs, but measures wheat, bailey, and a few other articles. He reads and writes from left to right. He eats almost nothing at breakfast about as much for dinner, but after tho work of the day is done, sits down to a hot meal swimming in oil, or better yet boiled butter. His sons eat with him, but the fe males of tho house wait till liis lordship is done. He riles his donkey when travel ling, his wife walks behind. Ho laughs at the idea of walking in the street with his wife, or ever vacating his seat for a wornau. Is a Broken Neck Curable.— A London letter in the Chicago Evening JUUlUdllias iLc . ° The old saying tbat there is no euro for a broken neck, has just been practically dis approved by a surgecu at Greenock. He was called in to see a young girl who had just fallen a distance of eighteen feet, and thoroughly dislocated her neck. When he reached her the face was nearly revers ed,and looking over the back, lie prompt ly supported the back with the left knee, took a grasp of the head, and began to pull gradually and pretty strong, whereupon tho girl’s eyes opened and there was an effort at breathing. Increasing the pressure the part suddenly came to their natural position, and after a minnte or two regular breathing was established. Close attention was after ward paid to the ease, and after much fever and occasional convulsions the child recov ered and is now as well as evea. Z-Sj '' There is an old tale, which, though idle in itself, the use may bo good. A cer tain man who would never go to church, when he heard the saint’s bell, would say to his wife: ‘Go thou to church and pray for thee and me.’ One night he dreamed thafyboth bo and his wife were dead, and thdPfhey knocked together at Heaven’s gate for entrance. St. Peter (by the leg end) is the porter, and suffered his wife to enter in. ‘She is gone in, both for herself and theo. As thy wife went to church for thee, so she must go to Heaven for thee.’ To The Point.—“ Say, boss, whar’s I gwine to sleep ?” asked a stalwart freedmaa of the overseer, be had been six weeks on the plantation. “Bleep ! why whore in the thunder have you been sleeping since I hired you ?” “Well, boss, I’sc been sleepiu’ on top uv a sick nigger since I’se been here; but he’s got well uow, and wont stand dat kind of darn foolishness no longer.” A whole cabin was immediately awarded him. BSgU “Pear me how fluidly he talks !” said Mrs. Partington, recently, at a temper ance meeting. “I am always rejoiced when ho mounts the nostril, for eloquence warns every catridge of my body.”
