[An Elephant on a Bender.
The big elephant attached to Dan Rice’s
circus, that e h bited at Utica last Satur-
I day, concluded to go on a raid last night.
I iis keeper had confined him in the tent on
the commons, lack of the reservoir, for tho
nijiht, and then, thinking his charge would
behave, went to his hotel. In the middle of
the night tho police at the station-house
were aroused by a man rushing in so ex
cited that he could hardly speak. He de
clared that the wild beasts hm broken loose,
and that, headechby the elephant, they
made an attack on Corn Gil!; and that tho
citizens of that locality were fleeing wildly
for their lives, and that ho had barely es
caped to tell the tale!
J ho driver of bis elephant was aroused,
and on proceeding to the scene of action
the elephant wis found in a garden, oorner
oi Steuben and Eagle streets, quietly munch
ing cabbages, turnips, and other “garden
sass.” Somebody who watched lfis motions
nays fences were no protection at all. He
would quietly pick up a length of fence and
lay it on one side, and then “lay into” tho
coveted cabbages. In a short time the con
tents of three gardens had been disposed
oi and he was looking about for more pro
visions when the keeper arrived and re
lioved the anxiety oi the inhabitants of
that locality.
Maurtage.— Marriage ia to a woman at
once the happiest and saddest event of her
Lie—it is the promise oi future bliss raised
on the death of present enjoyment. She
quits her home and her parents, her compan
ions, her amusements —everythingon which
she bad hitherto depended for cTmfort, for
a flection, for kindness and for pleasure.
The parents by whoso advice she has been
guided ; the sister to whom she has dared
to impart the embryo thought and feeling;
the brother who has played with her, by
turns the counselor, and the younger chil
dren to wood) she has hitherto been tho
mother and playmate, are all to be forsaken
at one fell stroke; every former tie is loosen
ed, the spring of action is changed, and she
flies with joy in the untrodden paths before
her; buoyed up by the confidence of requited
love, she bid i a i'or.d and grateful adieu to
the life that is paEt, and turns with excited
hopes aud joyous anticipation to the happi
ness to come. Then woo to the man who
can blight such fair hopes — whocan treach
erously lure mi eh a heart from its peaceful
enjoyment and watchful portection of home
who con coward like, break the illusions
which have won her, and do troyed the
confidence which love had inspired.
Tiie Poetry of Farming.— Agricul
ture has a field of poetry, as well as practi
cal culture. The “pastoral landscape” is
here ; all that the ancients have said" about
it—the harvest field sung about and beloved
by everybody, the tanned “haycock,” tho
scent of the new-made hay at evening; the
fields with their garniture of green, embra
cing the whole practical world of nature,
the great soutce of the poet’s inspiration.
There are tho fruits; ripe golden apples,
plashing and fragrant, peaches, pears,
plums, the strawberry and the seedy, glisten
ing blackberry, with their field of poetry !
And then the maize—in the fields, in the
bain, yellow and glistening on mild October
days, when the sun also is yellow, and the
earth is teeming like a wine press with plen
ty and. good cheer. Wjjat hope ! what pros
pect in store for the bright winter even
ing ! The vineyard itself is one of the great
est of poems llow the ancients doated up
on it aud sang its praise ! and now it is flow
ing ia streams, and hanging its purple clus
ters in blushing profusion.— Coleman's
Rural World.
Persimmons — Rough.— The Rich
mond correspondent of the Danville Regis
ter tells the following anecdote about Gen.
“Alleghany” Johnston, on tho march to
Bristow Station, in the fall of 1863. The
General was riding along the road, and
prcctiving one of his men up a persimmon
tree, halloaed out to him:
“I say, there, what are you doing up
their? Why aint you with your regiment?”
“I’m gettin’ simmons, I am,” replied tho
soldier.
“Persimmons, thunder ! They are not ripo
yet.® They are not fit to eat.”
“Yes, but General, persisted the Confect.,
“I am trying to draw my stomach up to suit
the size of my rations. If it stays like it is
now, I shall s’arve.”
The General had nothing further to say,
but rode on.
Wear a Smile. —W hich will you do,
smile and make others happy, or be crab
bed aDd make everybody around you mise
rable ? You can live among beautiful flow
ers and singing birds, or in the mire sur
rounded by fogs and frogs. The amount
of happiness which you can produce is in
calculable if you will show a smiling face,
a kind heart, and speak pleasant words.
On the other hand, hy sour looks, cross
words, and a fretful disposition, you can
make hundreds unhappy almost beyond en-.
durence. Which will you do ? Wear a
pleasant countenance, let joy beam in your
eye, and love glow on your forehead, There
is no joy so greit as that which springs from
a kind act or pleasant deed, and you may
feel it at night when you rest, and at mor
ning when you rise, aud through the day
when about your daily business,
