Ang 4 ly- Interest Jng Letter From Texas, Hamilton, (Hi.. Oct. 6, 1860 Editor Enquirer .-—I here send you a very interesting, letter from the lier. A. | Fitzgerald. (T nnerly of Dolton, Gn..) of Fort Worth, Texas'. This letter is from a well known Baptist minister, and an old citi zen of G eorgia— a man noted for his sa gacity and Christian piety. This letter is an answer to th:> many questions I pro pounded to him, and will he of much in terest and great information to our many friends who think of moving to the West ern country. Therefore, at the request of j .several friends, I send it to you for publi cation. Hoping it will boos much interest to your readeis, I liave the pleasure of sub scribing myself your friend, Ttios. S. Mitchell, M. D. Foiit Worth, Texas, [ September 13 th; 180(3. \ Dear Sir :—I am just in receipt of your very frank and candid letter, and with the same f ankness 1 hasten to answer all in de tail. 'lbis is mostly a stock country. Some men have a thousand head of cattle and three or four hundred head of horses. The land here is as level and as rich as you could desire it. There is. perhaps, no country that surpasses >his in kind of small grain, and 1 think, on an average osgood for corn as Georgia,if properly cultivated. This is decidedly a strange country, and very changeable in climate in every way and disagreeable, but it is a good country. You ; can raise just as much stock as you want without any feed. 1 live just in the edge of I ern: s timbers a strip of land from five to twelve miles wide and two hundred miles long, running nearly north and south, well timbered for this country, and on .either side is a prairie level.without timber, thirty miles wide. Sometimes in tan miles it does not afford a riding switch—all level and rich, and no water. Cisterns are the only chance Land from $1 to 8o per acre. Land here can be had pretty much as a man wants it—unless it is well improved places, which will cost from live to ten dollars, in stock or money, paid down. As to game there is plenty of deer and turkey, wild eats j and wolves, but it amounts to but little, as i they are very hard to kill in the prairies. | Seventy five miles west of here there is (plenty of huffaloe and antelope, but there the Indians steal horses and depredate in | every way —kill and butcher men and wo | men, and steai children to make servants of i them and also t.o sell to their parents. | We are perfectly safe from the Indians. : They occasionally come and steal horses | moonlight nights within fifty miles of us. | No one would he more cautious than I | would on that subject. | As to the churches there are plenty of all ; sorts, in cabins, all through the country, | but their standard of piety and intelligence !is low The war has done n ueh todemora j lize churches and society in this country. Churches are very well regulated in ti e towns and cities and all ea-t of the lower cross timbers. 1 think the schools aro as good, on ah average, male and female, ; s they arc in Georgia. No want of schools in Eastern or Middle Texas. The nearest point of public conveyance ti my house is Waxafcatcby, thirty miles from this. The railroad runs from Galves ton to Millikon, one hundred miles only. This fall it w’U go eight miles further. From to Maco is one hundred miles The stage runs twice a week, and from ! there to Waxa atchy is 100 miles. A hack runs twice a week, and there is an ir regular stage line from Waxahatchy toFort Worth, some eight miles east oi my house. If your family is healthy I would advise you to come by private conveyance—say a two horse wagon and two mules. Mules do well hero and readily sell for a good price, and so do wagons. Horses from the old States don’t do well here. I would sup pose that one hundred and fifty dollars would bear your expenses here. If you start early in the fall it will take you two months and a half to make the trip. (Good crops aD through Texas.) Be sure that you get to your home by Christmas; after rhat tie spring rains are liable to set in and it is then the worst country you ever trav eled in. Your family goods would all he ruined in swimming little ravines and small streams—would sometime.- detain you for two weeks, to say nothing of the health and comfort of your family. Prepare you a good ten gallon keg for water to drink and gook or your family will suffer. Tell the good wife to be sure to bring her bedding and bed clothes. They cannot be had here at any price. If you come by public conveyance you will come by New Orleans, and then the regular steamers wifi carry you across the Gulf to Galveston ; and then by railroad to Miliiken. Railroad fare is twelve cents per mile, and stage the same price I think it would cost you six hundred dollars to get to Mil iken by public conveyance. I will now give you what I regard a= the most valuable information for you. There | are millions of acres of as rioh lands as the I world affords, lying uncultivated and almost, uninhabited, now in Texas, which must make it the great State of all the State?; and the great. Central Railroad tbv ugh the entire State, parallel to the Brazos running through the best lands, towns, churches and schools, will add at least 10CO per cent, to town property and lands along the railroad. I would carnostiv advise vnu to settle, at least, for the present, in Washington cmnty. It ha? the best schools and sneie'y in the State, nud thickly settled with most wealthy farmers. Not much stock raised there All pay well—plenty of money there. There | ■Whole ISTo. 1613. is a railroad some forty miles below Milli ken that will carry yon in the centre of Washington country. Lands aro high and society good. It is mostly a cotton country But I must say that as a permanent loca tion, 1 prefer Sherman, in Grason county, to any other placo in the State. It is as good a farming country as any, within a few miles of the Red river, the line between Texas and the Choctaw Indians. (They aro civilized and friendly. The Grvernment will soon remove them ) Sherman will bo 'lie terminus of the raihoad of Texas and Kansas. It has a good farming country, and has a more reliable prujeettd railroad t! an any other town in The Southern railroad to California from St. Louis is complelled to run through it. Them are now 350 miles of the St. Louis railroad dme. The Memphis and Little Rock rail road nqpt here, and the great Central Texas and Kansas railroads must come here. It is bound to be the Atlanta of Texas. Yours, with great respect, A. Fitzgerald. MI SCELLANEOUS. KEROSENE AND GAS STOVES TEA AED COFFEE BOILERS, GLUE POTS, OIL CAES, &c, &c.
