FURNITURE "Whole ]STo. 164. Wlint ts A Darling T A Imly requested -‘Brick” .Pomcroy’a definition of what is a darling ? How hand ' sornely ‘‘Bride” has responded, the truth* J fulness of the exquisite pen picture which / follow will attest: If our definition will please any one or settle a point in dispute, it ia Riven cheer fuliy: A darling, as wc should speak the word, would mean a very dear, good heart loved girl or woman, who held the inner most place in our heart. She wonld be a woman loved above all else in the world—a woman we should defend before all mankind —a woman whose lips were those of truth and tacredness, whose happiness a man could live for—a woman a man could be proud of—a woman you could put your arm in gentleness around, draw to your heart, press a kiss to her forehead, and one on her lips, and as her head half rested on your shoulder, look deep into her eyes and whis per, Darling! She should be a woman in whom we had all the confidence in the world, one a man would ho proud to make happy, and whose pride would be in her husband’s success, happiness, reputation, her own good name, her person, her friends, her house, t:n 1 the purity of her heart. ‘ Dar ling’ means everything, words unspoken, caresses ripening for love to feed on, vol umes unwritten; kind action waiting op portunity; hopes unexpressed; faith untold for want of su -able word , It is the flower which beautifies the tree that bears the most delicious fruit in seasons. The word is a volume. It means more than one can ex press ; the clasping of the spirit hands of in heart-worship of the true and good; the word rainbow which spans the sky of hope and life; the bursting of the bud of the rno-t beautiful flower which sheds a perfume over the hearts ot those who love. We l ave answered our correspondent hastily, r.ot fully, for the word is a text for : n endless sermon, and should only apply to a sweetheart, wife, the little darlings which are dear to you because children of the first darling. It is a different word, a longer- word, a more meaning word than Pet, though often used in its place. Is RetjgioN Beautiful?— Always! In the chlid, the maiden, the wife, the mother, religion shines with a holy benig nant beauty of its own, wh : ch nothing on earth can mar. Never yet was the female character perfect without the steady faith, piety. Beauty, intellect, wealth ! they are like pitfalls, dark on the brightest day, un less religion throws her soft beams around them to purify and exalt, making twice glorious that which seemed all loneliness be fore. Religion is very beautiful, in health or sickness, in wealth or in poverty. We can never enter the sick chamber of the good, but the soft music seems to float on the air, and the burden of their song is, ‘Lo ! peace is here ! Could we look into thousands of families to-day, when discontent fights sullenly with life we should find the chief cause of un happiness, want of religion in womann. O, religion! benignant majesty, high on thy throne thou sittest, glorious and exal ted. Not above.the clouds, for earth clouds come never between thee and tlie truly pi ous souls ! nor beneath the clouds for above these is heaven, opening through a broad vista of exceeding beauty. Is religion beautiful? \\ T o answer all is desolation and deformity where religion is not. A Death Struggle Witii a Bear.— A terrific encounter between an Indian and a bear occurred a few days ago up in the vicinity of Tomah, Wisconsin Both the combatants were found a day or two since in the silent embrace of death, and there is probably no living witness to give a de scription of the horrible scene. The bear had been shot in some vital part by the In dian, and the latter, when found had his skull crushed as if by a powerful blow. The presumption is, either that it was a close encounter, the shot and the blow foll owing in quick succession—or the Indian, having shot the bear, then approached it in its death struggles, and received the blow which terminated his existence. E2F” Fred Douglass says that “he stands forth just as God made him.” We beg Fred’s most bumble pardon, but God never made him. God made white men and ne groes, but lie never made mulattoee. They are the origin of men’s sins and crimes— and so distasteful their existence to the be neficent Creator of everything good that He dooms them to extinction. God will not even permit these nondescript beings to ex ist peimanentlv on bis footstool, hut i the third or fourth generation punishes them with annihilation,—[Lynchburg Republi can. The Right Kind. —“What sort of a sermon do you like ?” asked Dr. Rush of Robert. Morris, one day. “I like, sir,” re plied Mr. Morris, “that kind of preaching which drives a man into the corner of his pew. and makes him think the devil is' af ter him.” Exit of Negroes from Georgia.— A dispatch from Augusta says : Large numbers of freedmen continue leaving the State for the Mississippi Valley, induced by offers of higher wages and by a desire for change, although labor it in de mand here. gjgU convict who was about to be sent to a house of correction, was told that they would set him to pick oakum. “Let ‘am try it, by gosh,” said he ; U EU i tenr 'heir damtd oaktnn all to pieaetP
