We adopt hearti ly his noble sentiments: Dear Admiral .-' Allow me to express my gratification at seeing you assume the po sition you have just tukeu. Abandoned, as we were, almost entirely by trie press of Alabama, it was time for some true and in dependent Southern man to stop forward, and rescue our lost cause fiom the disgraci being heaped upon it. Let us not “crook the pregnant hinges of the knee, that thrift i tn ay follow fawning,’’ but‘demand’ a" our rights, even as prisoners of' war; and should we not secure them, we will have the satis faction of knowing we have deserved them. Our slavery, if it must, eouie, should at least be “involuntary.” Even the Yankee sol diers, in convention, have dtc’ared it would be disgraceful for our people to abandon those who led them into the political posi tion. How much more 6o would it be for them to follow the advice of gome of your | professed friends, and abandon those who did 'not lead them into it, but risked and lost all in trying to load them out. Yes, and but for these same wise politeals would have led them to freedom and to fortune. Singular Incident. —A correspondent at Ddgefield Courthouse relates a curious i c dent which occnred last week, during j the trial of 11. J. Butler for killing Col. j Twiggs, it was proposed by the prosecu | tiou to introduce negro testimony. The i counsel for the defence objected, on the ! ground that no official notice had been given • of the passage of the law authorizing ne i grocsto testify against whites. The Judge 1 sustained ihe point. It was probably the ! first time such testimony has been propesed iiu the State. While the point was being | discussed a very black snake made its ap ! pearanee in front ot the Judge’s bench, and ! was crawling hurriedly towards the door, ! when it was overtaken by the Clerk, who, i with his heel, bruised its bead. Our cor | respondent asks us to 1.11 what was the j omen. We are no snakeist—beyond be 'ng, politically, somewhat of a copperhead— | and not much on omens of any kind, and j cannot, therefore, answer the query of our istcemcd correspondent. It was certainly a I very singular incident, and as such we give it to our readers. —A utj Chronicle. The Baltimore Election. The tclcsnpliTailod to advise us of the i re-ult of the Baltimore municipal election, j held on tbeAOth inst. The conservatives i'uradc no serious contest after it was. de ' torurined to limit tiie voting to the registra tion list of last year, and the radical ticket I obtained nearly all the votes. It is said, j however, that the conservatives will endeav or to have the election set aside by judicial decision. They claim that the registration : ot 186.5 docs not contain more than one j sixtli of the voting population of the city, 1 and that on a full vote they cjii beat the radicals four to otic. Not content even with the disfranchising of the great body of the voters, the radicals rulers, disregarding the custom that gives one election judge to the jiarty in the minority or out of power, up; o iited all the judges for each precinct from their own party, and cinphyed a large i number of extra policeman to prevent any ; one from voting but those on the registra j tion list of 1805. Blind indeed must be a party that can expect to retain power iu this country by disfranchising or defraud ing the people ! The Rev. C K. Marshal, of Miss issippi, writes to the Baltimore Eipscopal Methodist as follows: ‘•1 am preparing for publication, in one paper, an article.on the aelapse of our ne groes into the vilest African superstitions. The downward way out here is frightful, t Leading, old artful negroes are carrying Ihundr.ds of deluded fellows along with ! them in the ne e religion whioh tbey i teach. Among its first principles are the I following: that God who governed formerly i is dead; that the Yankee war overthrew lllim; that Ho was a slave otGod; that | Christ was the white mai’s slave; that he ! upheld white folks sustaining the institution lot' slavery; that lie is now defunct; and that two old negro women are elevated to I the Chiisthood, and invested with full au thority and power to manage tl.e interest of their salvation.” A True Soldier Bor.—During our late war, IVilJie Muslin, son of Mr. Ken> nerTy Mustin, of this city—a lad then only eleven years old—leit his home without the knowledge of Iris parents or friends, who used every effort to learn his whena bout, but without, success, and had long | since concluded that Willie was dtad, but last week their hearts were made glad by his return —more so, as lie is enfeeb ed irt health, needing their kind care- After i leaving home, he went to the army of Gen. I Lae, and acted as volunteer dranjntrup. ; to the day of the surrender, receiving reg ular rations like the other soldiers, but no 1 pay. After the surrender, sick and with. ! out money, he manfully wrnt to work on ; farm in Njrth Carolina for a support, but his health became too feeble to labor. With ten dollars given him by the man he work, ed fur, he has made his way home, where, under the kind care of parents and relatives we hope he will soon regain his health.— Const it utiamilfct, y
