Brought to Justice. —Two men call-;
iDg themselves Robert Johnson and ,
James Brittain, charged with horse ,
stealing, were lodged in our jail on
Wednesday, the latter in a very critical
condition from the effects ol a gun-shot
wound in the side.
The facts in the ease are these : It
appears that on the night of the 21st
ingt. a mule was stolen from the premis
es of a Mr. Forrester, in Lee county.
As soon as Mr. F. was apprized of the
fact he started in pursuit of the thieves ;
and traced them as far as this place.— j
Upon arriving here, Policeman '1 iner j
was detailed to accompany him and
they immediately began the pursuit
again, and succeeded in following the
thieves to within a few miles effort
Valley where they overtook them.— 1
When ordered to halt Brittain leaped
from the buggy (for it appears that they
had stolen a buggy also) and endeavor
ed to make bis escape, whereupon Po
liceman T. fired upon him with a dou
ble-barrel shot gun charged with five
pistol shot and a full charge of small
shot, the entire charge taking effect un
der Brittain’s left shoulder. Brittain
returned theiire with a Colt’s Navy Re
peater, hut happily without effect.-
The prisoners were then taken in charge
and transferred to this place, from
whence ( being unable to give the bond
imposed) they will he removed to:,Stark
ville to await their trial. Policeman
Tinek, who’gives us this statement, de
serves much credit for his perseverance
In bringing these menjto justice.
Equal Bights Association—Bow in
the Wigwam—Shirts torn and a few
Scratched Faces the Result. —A
night or two since the darkies of our
city assembled for the purpose of inaug
urating an Equal Rights Association,
Which proved to be a rosy affair.
Soon after the advocates of Equal
Bights had assembled a motion was
made to appoint a chairman viva voce-
The motion was carried unanimously,
•and resulted in the selection of Andrew
■Dudiy and Lem Waters as chairmen of
the convention. We cannot follow this
meeting of unbleached citizens through
the many phases, but will say that it
being an Equal Rights Association, and
some man of the ebonies coming in just
at that junction of affairs—the Presi
dent's* about returning thanks for the
honor conferred —did not exitclv fancy
the manner in which the afuir was be
ing conducted and proposed a reform—
that all should be office holders. This
-of course, fell like a burning brand
in the ranks of the adherents of the
Presidents, and a squabble ensued. The
mouse colored gentlemen generally sid
ing with the Presidents in their efforts
to preserve order—the true ebonies,
some of whom it appears had imbibed
pop-skull —jealous o f their rights,
were disposed to kick up a muss with
their copper colored brethren. The lat
ter accepted the gauntlet, and in a mo
ment or two the chosen champions of
the mouse colors and ebonies went at it.
The champion of the lib’s was too heavy
for his antagonist, and succeeded in
•tearing his ruffle bosom shirt, scratch
ing his face, and otherwise disfiguring
the would be gentry.
This state of affairs sorely perplexed
the defeated party, who, to redeem their
fortunes, was about putting forward a
second Richmond. By this time the ex
citement had taken hold of the sable
daughters, and the prospect bid fair for
atrial of pugilistic proficiency between
them. Luckily, however, for the peace
and dignity of our city, and for the pres
ervation of noses and eyes, the policeen
tcred and squashed everything in the
“ twinkling of an eye,” by deposing the
high dignitaries and arresting the cham
pions, Alexandei Hampton and Jim
Sullivan, of the antagonistic factions,- —
Thus ended the first effort to organize an
Equal Rights’ Association iij our town.
Worthy of Com>l<lcral lon,
It is a fact painful in itself, and eer.
tainly deserving our impartial attention,
that intemperance in all its varied forms,
is fearfully on the increase. Its growth,
already of hideous proportions, is being \
accelerated, and if it continues to dif
fuse its blasting contagion, society
will soon become corrupted, and good
morals will all have been sacrificed at
the shrine of low, debasing sensuality'.
Irregular and pernicious pleasure, in
unhappy' excess, is continually exhibit
ing new charms to its votaries, and
many rising capacities, which otherwise
would have refleeted honor on society,
are being suppressed by the indulgence
of inordinate desires.
And particularly is this fact strikingly
comprehensible with regard to the use of*
spirituous liquors. It is doubtless a
safe calculation when we estimate that |
there is more ardent spirits consumed ,
at this time, than at any time heretofore, j
Many of our young men, who were j
once ornaments to society—whose abili-j
ties were once fitted to adorn the high- j
est station, may be seen almost daily
reeling under the baneful influence of
intoxication, pursuing a course of
criminal excess, and thereby sinking
themselves into insignificance and con
tempt. Nor is such confined to the
young alone. We have seen and see
almost daily, grey haired fathers, many
of them members of the church, pro.
I fessors of religion;—They who should
i stand as examples of temperance and :
| piety to the young' around them: —we,
have seen these sneaking noislessly into
\ the back-rooms of our groggeries, and
j watched them as they went staggering
; homeward to the embrace of a loving
family. llow painful to contemplate
human nature in this ruinous course !
But is there no cause for this? llow
many promising young men, into whose
! minds and hearts have been instilled
i the principles of virtue and sobriety >
, influenced by the advice physiciai#
have taken the first step m a w oman
course of profligacy ! We have Mavn
many who have suffered Wneth
er taken alone or at cannot
convert spirituous liquors into iftsh and
blood, and therefore it cannot give
health or strength, nor dose it promote
digestion. It is certainly a palpable
falsehood that brandy, as a beverage, is
I cither necessary or useful. Our fore
j fathers lived without it, and who will
: deny that they were stronger and more
| healthy than we. Besides, experience
i teaches us that those who yield to the
j habit of drinking it even moderately as
a medicine, in most cases drink more
and more each day until they become
confirmed drunkards. If we would
avoid temptation, is it not best that we
drink none at all ?
Again, is not this infamous and de
! grading course on the part of our friends
attributable, in some measure, to the
marked indifference of Christians upon
this subject ? IV here is the minister or
member of tiie church who goes into a
bar room, and, taking his friend or
brother by the arm, begs him to desist
j from his ruinous course? Alas, how
l remiss we are! How utterly regard
less of our fellow beings! Is it not
time we should bestir ourselves ? if
we do not how dark may lie our
future! The towering intellects of our
j youth will soon be destroyed, and the
opening prospect of the rising generation
blasted forever.
