M o find the following sermon in the local columns of the Vi cst Alabamian, said to have been delivered by a colored preach er who rejoiced in the title of “Mnj.” Wo never saw a report in which the idiom of the negro was more faithfully given ; nor have we often seen a discourse more pointed and applicable to the present condition of the freednien : “And now my dear dyin and retnortal bredren and cistren iem me tell you dare is great trouble now in dis land—dare is a great trouble—and you say what am it? 0 l my dear young gemmen, and my dear young cistern, and my dear Christan friends dare am trouble for you and m j—and de Lord only knows how dat am gwine to end. What am dat trouble, Maj ? Why don’t you tell dis dear remortal congrcgashun—• ah what dat trouble is—ah ? Well, I tell you—ah, my young friends and my old fiends—ah of dis big trouble which amort do land—ah. We am now differently swituated from what wo was year ago—ah. Ebery black man and woman must take care ob dcmselves—ab. De trouble am about homes. Some - ob you got none now—ah. But den d.u is dat fine young lady—no missus her do right she go and hire herself out, away from her folks and her mammy— oh, how many snares dar am to lead her away from de pas of rcetichudc; and so do poor tools wander roun, from pillow to pos, ‘and fiom sos to poses—ah, and and if you don’t mind de dcbbil git your neperlastiog, nebber dying, remortal soles—ab. And dar am dat fine young nigger man loafin about, doin notin’ pi toll in’ waits on Sunday breakin’ de holy Sabaf day-—all ; pitchin’ waits jest because you see de white folds [•bellin’ dollars afore de grocery—ah. Yes, and 1 knode a white mun Ditch dollars till he got so poor he had to horror a dollar to pitch, and den he run ob credit that wty; he had comedown to old boss shoes. Take care young nigger, de ole debbil is no spec ter of pussons—he’d as soon have you as a white man —you make as good a fire in hell as de biggest, fattest white man iu de land —ab. If You Make a Baiioain Stick to it, —We clip the folltftving from The Lancl He Love: ‘Major B V»a\l comroaml of a Yr>itaMo \ of Texas cavalry, well-known to the people of that Sate for its deeds of daring among the snow-capped mountains of New Mexico and the swamps of Louisiana. While serving in Louisiana, previous to the first raid of Banks on the Bed Rivet Valley, he fell in love with a sweet girl, proposed and was accepted in due form. But just at thisjunc ture, Bank's column came along carrying ruin and desolation in their track. Our ftnccs fell back into the interior, but the fair young girl remained with her mother on the plantation. When the Federal Army retreated to Brasher City the Confedeiates were close upon their heels, and of course, one the first acts of the enamored Major was to call upon his promised bride. Her mother bad been ruined by the raid, the ne groes had all been carried off, stock all kill ed or taken away, every thing of value about ti e plantation bad been burned or destroyed. The young lady met her lover and said, ‘when I engaged myself to you, I was the owner of thousands, to-day, I am penniless. D. is not right to hold you to your pledge under these circumstances, you are free.’ ‘No,’ replied the Major,‘l love you and not your property. You are dear er to me now than ever.’ Some months afterwards, the noble Major fell desperate ly wounded, while bravely fighting at 'ha head of his battalion in the bati'e of For doclie. He lingered long in the Hospital, but was finally able-to come out—a wreck of his former self. His right arm had been amputated, and three fingers had been ta ken off his left hand. The lady was his render nurse thrn’sufFering and confinement. When he began to convalesce, lie said to her, ‘I am a cripple and must bo helpless all rny life. It would be selfi-h in me to ask you to throw away yourself on such a wreck as I am.’ ‘No said she, ‘you did not deSert me in my distress and poverty. Nothing but death shall ever part us again.’ They now live in the vi 1 g? ct in Texas, affording a beautiful example of de voted happiness and ot the reward attending true nobleness of soul.’ Poor old Forney has been indicted for malicious attempts, says the New York World, to incite riots in the'city of Balti more. It is to bo hoped that this report s true, and that the bloody Colonel may be placed where his offences deseive. Ho has been working on the credulity of ne groes and, ruffians for some time past, and it ought to be stodped. We are for gag ninc ail such creatures, North and South. The Government must be maintained at any cost. The World says there are inany better and purer-minded men in out State prisons than Forney, and we say, let him be judged and if necessary jugged.
