It lias been owing to theab scnce of the editor, and a death iir the family of tire Foreman of the office, up on whom the duty devolved. 257“ There is no need now of asking who has the prettiest and largest stock of Dry Goods, for if you only go to S. Waxelbaum it lino, the question is de cided, They always can show you the most beautiful and uiost handsome assortment of Ladies Dress Goods, Shawls, and Cloaks &e. &c. Go there if you wish to buy very cheap. Oct. 3d. It. SWEET OPOFONAX ! The only elegant. Perfume - Is found on all toilets, and nev er stains the handkerchief. Sold at the Drug stora of [oct.9tff Dr. E. J. ELDHIDGE. ' Those Oysters. —We do not envy the clever gentlemen of our city who, the other night, partook so largely of Savannah oysters and did not feel very well afterwards! Those oysters it is fair to presume, were either bad them selves or fell into bud hands. The ■inland city, it must be borne in mind, is not accustomed to fresh, oysters, and coming su far to get here, wo‘‘guess” they were in a somewhat rotten condi tion. Hence the tenduncy to sickness! For the Sumter Republican Mr. Editor: —Allow me to congratu late you and. all the good people of your nourishing little city, on the prosperous oonditiou iu which I find it after a long absence. To one whose lot has been cast among demolished towns, devasted and impov erished country, evidences of prosperity which greet the eye on every side in the city of Americas are indeed, truly gratifying and refreshing. The demon of war seems not to have passed this way, no marks of his blighting foot prints being visible iu either town or country. Judging from the many hue build ings springing up, the increased number of business houses, the immense Stocks of goods on hand, and the active trade going on, it is’manifest that Americas is fast culminating towards the zenith of prosperity. Perhaps no other town in Georgia has emerged from the war less scathed than Americus; and none enjoying a brighter pros; c.-t of a prosperous future. While the elements ofsuccess are clus tered thickly around her, another has just been added in the extension of the wires to this place, and the establish ment of a telegraphic office. This, with all the facilities already possessed ren tiers Americus one of the most desirable localities in the State. Long may she live, and her future prospects be more than realized. R ' 237“ Gent’s ready made clothing can be had in the most fashionable styles and magnificent makes at the lowest figures at S. Waxelbaum & Bro. in S. ■S. Boone’s new corner store, step in and take a look at their goods so you can judge for yourself. Oct. 3d. It. •The Life of Forrest. —We learn from a Nashville paper that Gen. Thom as Jordan, formerly of Gen. Beauregard’s staff, and Col. Jno. P. Pryor, of Mem phis, are engaged iu preparing for pub lication a life of Gen. Forrest, and that they will have it ready for the press in a couple of months. We concur in the remark of the editor that the work 1 will afford a contribution to the present literature which will soon be one of its most interesting features.” ’fhe char acter of this distinguished officer shines as brilliantly in in time of peace as it did in in time of war. Count Bis:,i ark Disgraced.-— lt is a trite saying that Republics are ungrate ful. Jt would seem that the imputa tion is not less applicable to despotic Governments. John Mitchell, the Paris correspondent of the New York News, states that Count Bismarck, the ac knowledged hero of the late, war, is almost certainly disgraced, lie has not received the high honors which were declared to be in store for him, and the military grade which has been given him is held as the reverse of a promotion. So he had been absent of late from the Kipg’s eouncil, under the plea of sick ness, though it is believed iu Berlin that ho is enjoying excellent health. The King is jealous. There has been too much credit given to Bismarck by ma king in general, and lie desires to have all tho credit to himself. Such has been the fate of much of true merit in public life in all ages of the world. An Indianapolis dispatch of the 13th ult., to the Cincinnati Gazette, says: Tho Supreme Court of tho State, now in session, to-day decided in the case of Smith against Moody, on ap peal from Marion county Common Ideas Court, that the thirteenth arti cle of our State Constitution, known as the Black Article, and all laws pass ed in pursuance of its provisions, are void, as being in conflict with the con stitution of the United States. The Court holds that any citizen of the Uni ted States, no matter what his color may be, who lias resided six months in this State, is a citizen ot the State. The judgment was unanimous, and the opinion was delivered by Chief Justice Gregory. 237“ The war sptrit is said to be again rampant among the Fenians, es pecially those of Buffalo. At Cincin nati also four full companies were mus tered into service yesterday, and ar rangemeuts are completed for uni forming and arming as many others as may come forward. —— V A wretched old villain namecFßcck, sixty five years of age, is in the hands th: law in Chicago, for the persons of two little girls, twelve or thirteen years of age. One of the children died some time ago, from the abuse, without, revealing it to her friends, her lips being sealed by fear. The other, having been removed from liis influence, told her story, and the ar rest, of the ancient fiend was immediate ly made. Has She a Call to he a Wife.— Tlas she a call to be a wife who thinks 'more of her silk dress than her children, and visits her nursery no oftener than once a day ? Has the wonan a call to boa wife who sits reading the latest novel wliile her hus band stands before the glass vainly trying to pin together a buttonless shirt bosom '! lias that woman a call to b? a wife who cries for a cashmere shawl when her hus band’s notes are being protested ? Has that woman a call to be a wife who expects bet husband to swallow diluted coffee, sogvy bread, smoky tea, and watery potatoes, six days out of seven. Has she a call to be a wife who fiirls with every man she meets, and reserves her frowns for the home fire side ? Has she a call to baa wife who comes down to breakfast in abominable cuil pa pers, a soiled dressing gown, and shoes down at the heal ? lias she a call to be a wife who Lores her husband, when he routes into the house, with the history of a broken tea cup, or the possible whereabouts of a missing broom handle '! Has she a call to boa wife, whoso hus band’s love weighs naught in the balance with her next door neighbor’s daibask cur tain or velvet carpet '! lias shea call to be a wife, who ‘ has the headache’ whenever her husband wants her to walk with him but willingly wears out her gaiter-boots promenading with his gentlemen friends ? lias she a call to be a wife, who would take advantage of a moment of conjugal weakness to extort money or exact a prom ise ? Has she a call to be a wife, who takes a journey for pleasure, leaving her husband to toil in a close office, and “have an eye.” when at home to the servants and children ? lias she a call to he a wife, to whom a good husband’s society is not the greatest of rosy children is the best furnishing and! prettiest adornment - —[Fanny Fren. 257“ A gentleman traveling in tho Brov- j inces lately entered a villiagc where he ssw j a large body of militia being drilled by someone who was invisible. Coming; coser, be found,to his intense amusement, \ (hat the oolficer was actully sitting down lu his shoo. It appears that finding it too . hot in the sun, lie mustered his men oppo site to his place of business, where he enter ed, and continued tho drill under circum stances* more convenient to his own com fort. j Ah express train carried twenty millions of thalers from which the war indemnity Austria must pay Prussia. It was loaded by the ton and took twenty men six days to count it. Ten clerks, twelve tellers and thirty-six gendarmes ac'compa.nicd the trail. A Nkw and Grand Fpccii in Mi.dicine. —Dr, Maggie! is tho founder of new Medicine System ! The quantitarians, whose vast internal doses on, feeble the stomach and paralyse the bawds, must give precedence to the man who restores health and appetite, with from one to two of his extraordinary Bills, and cures the moat virulent sore with a box er so of his wonderful and nlli healing salve. These two great specifics of tho Doctor are fast, superceding all the stereotyped nostrums of the day. Extraordinary cures by Dr. Magaiel'- Pills and Salve have opened the eyes of tile public to the ill, tfidency of the (so called) r< medies of others, and upon which the people have so long depended. Maggiel s Pills are not if the class that are swullowpd lip by the deism, aud of which every box full taken creates an absolute necessity for another. One or two of MaggicTs Pills suffices to place the bowels in perfect order, tone the stomach, ere* ate an appetite, arid lender the spirits light and buoyant. 3 here is no griping, and no Reaction in tile form of constipation. If the liver is af fected, its functions are restored ; and if tho nervous system is fetb e, it is invigorated - 'I his last quality makes the medicines very desirable for the wants of delicate females. Ulcerous and eruptive diseases are literally extinguished by the disinfectant power of Maggiel's Salve. In fact, it is here announced that Maggiel’s Bilious, Dyspeptic and Diarrhoea Pills cure where all others fail. While for burns, scalds, chilblains, cuts and all abraisins of the skin Maggiel’s Salve is infallible. Sold by J. Maggiel, New York, and all Druggists, 25 cents July 7 ly. EXECUTOR’S SALE.
