We are aware that this good work would be a labor and an undertaking, which would require some years, yet the amount of good which could be done by it, has presented itself so strongly to our inind, that we have thought it well to ask the brethren generally to take it under considera tion. Other Grand Lodges have founded these great works ofMasonio charity, and we see no reason why ours should not emulate tlieir bright examples, and be the noble means of doing as much good. We arc annu ally expending a very large amount, as a fraternity of means and resource's in afford in;; n erely a temporary relief to the sick arid indigent. No perma nent or lasting good can be attained in tins manner. Now, we think that a united effort on the part of all the brethren of this grand jurisdiction, would secure the foundation of an asy lum, which would afford a peaceful home for the declining years of aged and infirm brethren, a quiet and cer tain livelihood for the unprotected widow, and a provident anti fostering care of the orphan. For all these great considerations, we ask the earn est attention of the brethren to this enterprise, and hope it will receive their approbation, and we would advise, that a committee be appointed for the purpose of perfect ing some feasible plans for the attain ment of the desired object.” The Last Pancake—A Buck wheat Romance, Adapted to the Reason. —Cri.u\ 1. She threw herself upon his breast and wept, Chap. 2. As she ceased weeping he groaned—like all get eoct. Then they sat entwined in each other’s arms for about two hour?, and nary one of ’em spoke. Chap, 3. A voice fractured the sol emn stillness of the air, ?Twas Eugene’s. “ llow sweet, my own love Harriet, if I bad a pancake to cat first.’’ Then she lifted her tear-dimmed eyes to the starry heavens—clasped her hands wiidly and exclaimed, “Conic with iae to the kitchen, love, and thou shalt, eat thy fill, for lliere were three left at breakfast.” They clasped each other by the hand and rushed to the pantry. Ciiap. 4. Two pancakes had disap peared, and the third was about (o shear same fate, when a stealthy step was heard. “ Fly, nry angel! my beau !! ’tis the old woman, I know!!!” and she fell fainting at his feet. Ciiap. 5. The old woman stood face to face with Eugene. And she asked him wliat ho had been doin’ with the gal, and lie raid lie hadn’t done nithin’ She seized upon the n m lining pan cake and with the ferocity of a tigress she chucked it at him. Ciiap. G. Iler aim had been too true- She hit him in the pit of the stomach, and he fell at her feet a corpse. They buried them both in one grave, and every spring the village maidens pFnt roses over the grave where lie the lovers at last united. Had Him There. —A traveler once arrived at a village inn after a hard day’s travel, and being very tired, requested a room to sleep in, but the landlord said that they were entirely full, and that it was utterly impossible to accommodate him ; that, bis wife bad to sleep on the - sofa and himself on the floor; but bo would see what bis wife could do for him. The good woman, on being applied to, said there was a room ho might occupy, provided be would agree to the condi tions, viz : to enter the room late in the dark, and leave it early in the morning, to prevent scandal, as the room was occti pif and a lady. ' This ho agreed to. About two o’clock in the morning an aw ful noise was heard in he house, and our friend the traveler v, \ heard tumbling heels over head down stairs. The land lord, on arriving at the spot, inquired what the matter was; The traveler ejac ulated, as soon as he was able to speak : “Oh, Lord ! that woman's dead.” “1 know that,” replied the landlord ; “but how did you find it out?” The Most Beautiful Hand. —Two charming women were discussing one day what it is which constitutes beauty in the hand. They differed in opinion as much in the shape of the beautiful members whose merits they were dfecus siriff. A gentleman friend presented him s-If, and, by common consent, the qtes ticn was inferred to him. It was a deli cate matter. He though.t .ofParis ami three goddesses. Glancing from one to the other of the beautiful wh’te hands presented him, which, by the way, he had the cunning to hold lor some time in his otrti, for the purpose of examination, ho replied at last: “I give it up ; the ques tion is too hard forme; but ask the poor, and they will tell you that the most beau tiful hand in the world is the band that gives.”
