Up at Last.—lt gives us great pleasure to
announce that the clock, which was purchas
ed by the citizens of this place about eight
years ago, has at last been put up. Last
Saturday, wc heard its clear notes for the
first time, and it made, ns f el glad indeed.—
This is a now epoch in the histo-y of Amer
icus;and will certainly be a great conveni
ence to our citizens- The cupola presents a
very handsome appearance, and addt greatly
To the looks of the building. We have m>
doubt many midnight thanks, hereafter,
will Ire given try our citizens, who, lyingsnug
and warm in bed, dislike to got up am 1 strike
a liglr tto learn the hour. The clock is pro
nounced to be one of the best in tire country.
In connection with the clock is a very tine
boil, weighing over six hundred pouri's, to
be used as an alarm bell in case of lire.
WcVpc that the City Uiuecil will employ
some competent and faithful person To keep
the elo -k in running order. This duty mu-t
devolve npor. some particular person, for
without it, the clock will be of no avail.
Who says now, Amei icus is not a city, coir
taming as it (toes, a population of over five
thousand and a city dock. Hurra for Ameri
cas, say wc I
The 'Weather —Yesleiday was very
pleasant. The ladies were out and blooming
like roses fresh from a ‘-bud bouse.” They
■were out in full force. It w s a clear day,
su.d very much after the fashion of Spring,
only we didn't hear the birds sing, nor see
the 'flowers blooming. Wc were almost
tempted to tli row aside pen, paste and scis.
sore, and take a seat at the window, and look
at the ladies as they pass; (l in their glorious
mrnphernulia of dry goods, millinery, and
all else That makes woman look attractive
We love to look at the pretty manufactures,
but not quite so much as the young gentle
men in the office, who cannot refrain from
looking at the dear little creatures, as they
pass by. It ain't worth while for the tempt
ing creatures to be passing this way. for we’ll
inform them that all the fine looking gentle
men in this concern, have already been caught,
and it's too late f r any other to try to get
them to bite, they wont do it. It is too late,
yes, entirely; you should have thrown on*,
your nets before. Poor things, we are sorry
foryou ! But you must wait until some o 1
them become widowers, and then they’ll
take your case into consideration, provided
you are not tco old, nor have more ilntu two
teeth!
Carri’.ge Establishment.— We call the
attention of all desiring either a carriage,
wagon or buggy, to the advertisement ol
Win. Sirri.nh. Now is the time to make
purchases. The vehicles put up at this estab
lishment are of the very best'andsubstantial.
Oapt. Sirrin'll has luid j a long experience
in the business, and his work is of the most
approved kind. lie is offering his work now
on the most favorable terms. He is prepar
ed to build any kind of a vehicle to order,
repair or refit vehicles, and those em
ploying him may rest assured that they will
get as good a job as can be had at the South.
Call on him at once and see how cheaply'
neatly and. securely, ho can dress anything
that runs on wheels. 11 is wood work is not
surpassed by any, and the ironing will he
made to compare at rates suited to the su
perior quality of his work and the hard
limes.
Besides vehicles, die has always on hand
a lot of harm ss, made up in the most sub
stantial and beautiful styles. Oapt. Sirr’ne
is one of the most enterprising gentlemen*!-)
this entire section of country, and should
receive liberal encouragement in all l.is un
dertakings. lie labors in such a manner as
to prove a benefactor to his fellow man-
His establishment is a very great accommo
dation to the people and slionid.be pioperly
appreciated.

Our Schools. |
Fcri.ow Masonic Female College.— YV e
are pleased to learn, from the President of
this Institution, that the Spring term bpento
with very flattering prospects. The number
of pupils in actual attendance at this timc>
in about 150. The Institution is presided
over by W.u. A. Wilson, a gentleman who
has made teaching his profession all his life.
He is assisted by a full corps of able and ex.
perienced teachers ; young ladies desiring to
complete their education, will find the ad
vantages of tliis institution equal to any in
the State.
Male Agademv.— Wc are informed by
Mr. Dodo, one of the principals of this acad
emy, that the school is daily increasing in
numbers and interest. So far, the num
ber of stud nts is small, compared with the
large number of boys in the place. We tear
that par eats these days, are neglecting, too
much, the education of their sons. This
should not be the case. If there ever was n
time, when the youth of the land should lie
educated, the present is the mo t propitious.
Send your boys to school, and keep them
from loafing about the streets, and they will
make men and become ormmrents to socie
ty and u bit-s ing and comfort to tliiir pa
rents. By (ill means, patronize your own
schools, and don’t send your children abroad.
We have as good.tcachers here as any where,
else. Messrs. Dodd & Hudson, of llie Male
Academy, rank among the best.
Rock Hill Acabkjiv. —Drs. Randall A
Stanford opened a school for girls and boys
yes'erday, under very auspicious circumstan
ces. The Senior of the seho >1 has been a
teacher for the past years, and is
perfectly at home in a school room. The
modesty o! Dr. Stanford prevents him fr m
passing for what lie is really worth.—■
He is certainly one of the last scholars in
tlte place. We hope these gentlemen will
receive a large accession to their school.—
Truly may they he styled “ veteran teach.
Cl’S.
There are other schools in the place which
wc wou’d gladly notice but have no opportu
nity of learning any tiring in reference to them.
We mny have occasion to speak of them
hereafter.
We would urge upon our citizens, the im
portance of .sending their children to school-
There arc enough children in Americas to id

No better legacy could be. left a child, a
good education. In the language of tmWii.
nent statesman, “show me the
churches and schools in a community,
will show you "an intelligent and a
ous people.”
A Hard Hit.—We clip, the following
from the Albany Patriot of the 2lith inst.—
Come friend Sweet give brother Christian
a showing at his little town. Whnt'if he can
count the inhabitants from Lis office, you
should not be so severe on him. lie is a
clever fellow, and if by taking the census (and
liis town, it can be made to show it lias* a
population of two hundred, let him do So.
It wont hurt any body, and will and > friend
Christian a right smart of good. He might
get a foreign advertisement by the showing.
So go ahead brother, and take your census,
regardless of friend Sweet.
The Census.— The Dawson Journal sug
gests to tlio “city I ’ups,” ol that flourishing
town, that it would lie valuable information
for the future liistori m to know exactly the'
number of whites and -'pus-sons of cti.ler.” in .
that locality. Why go to this expense, fi iced
Christian ? Why uoijfstand Jin your office
door and count Hitnt ?—could be easily done,
couldn't it ?
PA Cotemporary says: ‘-There is a

Good for Missouri.— About the first of

suggesting that they should send the money
to Gov. Jenkins. The ladies replied by
sending a check- for tlie amount to the credit
ofC. 11. Smith, asking ldm to expend the
money “for the relief of disabled Confederate

try it in your own family circle:
Mr. Edward Wilder, City :
Dear Sir: I have examined your Stomach
| Bitters carefully, and found it what you rep
i resent it to be. The high order which the
j ingredients going into it. take in the Materia
| Medina, as Well as the most happy propor-
I honed combination of substances, make
I} our Bitters far superior to any similar prep
aration in the country. The fact that you
use only the purest Bourbon Whiskey must
necessarily recommend your Bitters in anoth
er point, especially as far as wholesome—
ness ahd palatabi ity are taken into consider
ation. I was well pleased to see in your es
tablishment the process of manufacturing
your Bitters carried on by way of displace
ment, which not only gives you better pro
duct tut also recommends iisclf by clearer
operation. EMIL SCHEFFER,

Air. Edward Vfilder, City:
Dear Sir: My wife and child have been
suffering for several months from indigestion.
My wife s. eing your adverti-ernent, request
pel me to bring her a bottle of your Stomach
Bitters, which I did: and on her using one
bottle, I am more than happy to state that
my child, now four months old. who has not
had a voluntary action since its birth, is en
tirely restored, and my wife is enjoying the
best of health, and is now wholly unwilling
to be without a bottle of your bitters in the
house, as she says it is the most strengthen
ing and apetizing tonic that can be used, and
that no house ought to be without it.; and I
feel it due to the public to make known tlie
wonderful good it has performed in my house
hold, and most heartily recommend its use
in every family.
I remain yours, respect full v.

Mr. Edward Wilder, Louisville, Ky.;
Dear Sit*: I take pleasure in saying that I
was suffering from Ague and Fever or Chills
and Fever for several months, when 1 was
ad vised by a friend to try your famous
Stomach Bitters, and after using two bottles
lam entirely restored. It not only imparts
new vigor, but it is truly the best strength
ening arid appetizing tonic, at the same time
pleasant to the taste. I have ever known used
or offered to (lie public, and I would say to
all tho«e similarly afflicted that, if they
would be cured and have the disease thor
oughly eradicated from the system, to use
your Bitters, and be convinced of their won
derful medicinal power and virtue.
I remain yours, re pectfully,
r. P. NEYITT.

To E. Wilder, Esq., City:
I was a good deal afflicted with Indigestion
and occasional attacks of Dyspepsia, I was
advised to use your Bitters. 1 scarcely used
one bottle when I felt relief, and from the
use of the Bitters, though nearly sixty-seven
years of ago, feel the same energy ar.d vi
vacity and cheerful spirits of a boy of twen
ty-five. Your Bitters are a pleasant tonic
and cordial, and, as they are prepared with
pure ingredients and good old Bourbon
Whiskey, I can safely indorse their use to
all afflicted as I wasi l would say to such
persons, Keep your mind easy, your bowels
open, your head cool, your feet warm, and
use Wilder’s Bitters, and never mind the
Doctor.
Respectfully,
J. C. BUCKLES..
