4 Parable for Business Men—Tho Ef
fect of Printer’s Ink-
There was once upon a time a man
who kept a store and sold goods whole
sale and retail.
And became melancholy, because cus
tomers were shy and limes hard.
And he said : Lo! lam ruined, and
the sensation ia disagreeable.
And piy ruin is rnoro painful to bear
because it is slow in progress, even as wa
ter doth gradually become hotter in tha
pot wherein the lobster boileth, until iho
crustacepus creature shiieketh out his
8t ul in apguish,
Lo ! It is better to bs rgined cjuickly
than to e dure this slow torture,
J wijl give my money away to the
poor man—even the pooiest, which is lie
who prhiteth newspapers ; and I will shut
up jjjy shop and wrap myself in sack
cloth of desolation', and pass my difys in
the perilous or broken bank-, cursing the
hardness of times and tendering my gar
ments.
And the howling of Tt.me shall be as
dulcet sounds ot dulcimers, and they who
blow the flutes and instruments of music,
compared to the din, I will make in the
ears of the wicked—even iu the cars of
the bank dircetois.
And even as he said, so he did ; for he
was not like other men’s sons who are
foolish and know it not, and they will do
so and so, performing that which is con
trary.
For the sons of men are fickle, and he
that is born of a woman doth .spite his
face by diminishing the length of the
nose thereof.
And, lo ! the printer— even ho who
published) newspapers—was made glad
by the bounty of him who sold wholesale
and retail: and he did sound his praises
aud print then) moreover; and aid l}ow
his trumpet of fame respecting that man's
dealings from the rising of the sun even
to the going down of the same.
And ke—even of the printer of papers
—did magnify and enlarge npon the
stock of goods which the trader had jn
his store, and did publish the variety,
and the excellence, and the newness, and
the beauty, and the cheapness there
of, till tho people—yes ! all of them, far
and near, were amazed.
And they said, lo ! this man hath gath
ered from the East and V\ est costly mer
chandise and wares of wondeious value
—even the workmanship of cunning ar
tificers—and we knew it not.
Go to, then. We will lay out our sil
ver and gold in those things which the
printer primed of, and that which he
doth publish shall be ours. For this
man’s merchandise is better than the
bank notes of those who promise to pay,
and therein lie, even banks of deposit
which beguile us of our money aud swin
dle us like sin.
But the trader was still sad, and he
said, the money that these people bring
me for the goods in my store I will give
to the piinter, and thus wiil I ruin my
self; I will do that which no man hath j
yet done in my time, or before. I wiil j
make the printer man, whom all men :
scorn for his poverty, rich, and ho shall ;
be clad in fine linen and rejoice.
And tho sons of men shall meet him
in the market place, and tho sheriff shall
shun him, and the scoffers shall he rebu
ked and shall take off their hats to him
that was poor,
And he shall flash the doiiais in the
eyes of the foolish, and shall eat bank
notes and sand-wiches.
For I shall ruin myself, and he who
advertises me shall enjoy my substance.
But, lo! the trading man—even he
who sold merchandise, became rich and
even as the unclean beast iietn in the
mire, stirred he not by reason pf mg eh
greenbacks.
And the ppopio flocked to his store
from the Fibrin, and from the South, and
fpog) tho East, and fiotn the West.
And the printer rejoiced, and his
! 'phat : ’ did abound.
But the trader could not become poor,
and his melancholy censed, and the smiles
of happiness were upon his face.
And his children did become mighty
in the land by reason of the dollars
which many of the people who read his
advertisements had poured into tha tra
der’s money bags.
Cut This Out. —The Mercantile
Times gives the following seasonable
rules for young men commencing busi
ness :
The wcrld estimates men by their suc
cess in life—and, by general consent, suc
cess is evidence of superiority.
Never, under any circumstances, as
sume a responsibility you can avoid con
sistently with your duty to yourseT and
others.
Base all your actions udon a principle
of right; preserve your integrity of char
acter, and in doing this, never reckon the
cost.
Remember that self-interest is more
liktly to wrap your judgement than all
other circumstances combined'; therefore
look well to your duty, when your inter
est is concerned.
Never make money at the expense of
your reputation.
Be neither lavish nor niggardly ; of the
two, avoid the latter. A mean man is
universally despised, but publie favor is
a stepping stono preferment—therefore
generous feelings—should be cultiva
ted.
Say but little —think much—aad do
