The Two Partings.
The following instructive history
is from the Philadelphia National
j Baptist. It should serve as an awful
| warning to those who place the intox
icating cup to the lips of others or to
thejr own;
One winter evening, many years
ago, a fair young girl stood before
the glass in her own pleasant little
room, giving the last touches to Lor (
toilet. That night was the first party j
of the season, and perhaps, Emma !
might be excused if'she lingered a lit
tle longer than usual, smoothing
once again her dark brown hair, and
adjusting the soft folds of her beauti
ful dress.
“Come, Emma,” called her mother,
at length, “I am afraid that you for
get that Mr. B is waiting for
you.”
No, Emma had not forgotten, as
the rosy flush that stole across her
cheek testified. Her last thought as
she stood smiling at her reflection in
the glass had been. “Tlijs is the col
or which lie likes; I am sure lie will
be pleased.”
Quickly she hurried down stairs,
and after playfully excusing her de- j
lav while the flush deepened at Mr j
IT’s evident admiration, turned to her j
mother, saying, ‘T believe I am ready !
at last.”
‘•Take good care of yourself, dar-!
ling, said the mother, as she wrapped j
a warm shawl around the slender ,
form, "and don't stay very late.”
Their destination was soon reached j
and as the young man moved through J
the brilliantly lighted room, many a
glance ot admiration was cast at his
companion, more than one ofc his
friends whispered, “James is a lucky
fellow ; I’d give a good deal to be able
to monopolize Miss Emma as lie
does.”
The evening sped joyously on, and
at length, towards its close, refresh
ments were handed around. Mr. B.
was standing a little apart front Em
ma, who was the centre of a laughing
group of young girls, when the lady
of the house*, with a smile, offered hj.n
a glass of wine.
“No, thank you; I do not drink
it,” was his reply.-
“Pshaw ! vv hat nonsense,' 9 she re
turned. “No one has refused it this
evening, and I don t intend to allow
you to be the first. Come, just one
glass : it can’t hurt any one.”
“1 cannot do it,” he answered grave
ly, “for I have determined never to
taste a drop,”
“Come here, Emnta,” called the la
dy; “I want you to coax this obsti
nate young man to take a little
wine. I know he will not refuse
you.”
Emma took the glass in her little
white hand, and, with a smile that
few could have resisted, said, “Come,
James, you will take just this one
glass.”
“No, Emma,” he answered with a
painful effort, “I have made up my
mind, and you must not ask me to
change it.”
“Then you shall not accompany me
home to-night, Mr. 8.,” said Emma,
with an angry flash of her dark eye ;
“now take yonrem-he,”
“I nujst bid you good bye, then,
Emma, if it comes to that.” he said
sorrowfully ; “I would gladly do any
thing else for you, but that'l cannot
do,” So saying he bowed and turn
ed away.
“Never mind, Emma, I’ll se yon
home,” said a young man standing
near, whose flushed face betokened
lie had taken more than one class.—
“Let him go, the ill-mannered feilpw ;
who cares ?”
S.o saying, he offered his arm,
which Emma accepted and they mov
ed off together.
More than ten years had passed
away. Mr. B was married and
established in a prosperous business,
and by degrees the incidents of his
parting with Emma were almost ibr
trotten.
One day a man. with whom he was
slightly acquainted, came into his
store and asked for employment-.
“I am afraid I cant give it to you,
Norris,” was the answer. “I make it
a rule never to have any one in my j
employment who is intemperate.” * j
“But I mean to slop all that, Mr.
I*s ,” said the man earnestly.—
“i have made up my mind to quit
drinking entirely. It’s rather hard
not to give a man a chance when he
wants to reform.”
“Well,” said Mr. B partial
ly relenting. “I will try you. Come
into the back part of the store and 1 j
will give you some work.”
A bundle Was soj;; madg up, with !
which Norris departed, several days
elapsed, and the work not being re
turned, Mr. B sent to his resi
dence to ask t-Jie reason.
Alas! it was the same old talc of
sorrow. The husband and father had
gone on a drinking frolic, leaving a
sick wife and three starting chil
dren. °
Mr. B ’s generous heart
prompted him to go to their relief at
once. He entered the miserable
dwelling and found the sick woman
lying in a room bare of furniture,

“Don’t you remember Emma If '
—; —i? Don't you remember my ©£\
feeing you the wine at the party, and
your refusing it ? God knows l wish
I could forget it, but it seems as if it
were branded on my heart in letters
of fire.”
It was some moments before m
B could realize that the miser
able creature before Idm was, indeed,
the bright, fascinating girl from whom
he had parted so many years before.
‘ Poor Emma, how you must have
suffered, ’ lie said, compassionately.
“Hut do you forgive me?” she ’ask
ed anxiously. : "
“Certainly ; say no more about it.
\ou must not saty in tlrs wretched
place. Js your Mother living?”
“ics, si 1 ', in ihe country.”
“Would you not like to go back
to her with die children ?’’
“Yes, sir,” sire answered sadly,
“but 1 have no means.”
“Do not trouble yourself,’said Mr.
L , “as soon as you arc suffi
ciently recovered, I will take ettro of
that part of*.he undertaking. Let me
know if there is anything else lean
do for you. No thanks,” he added
hastily, as the poor woman commenc
ed a grateful acknowledgement, ‘‘good
bye,”
This was the second parting.
Young ladies, you who arc accus
tomed to press your gentleman friends
to partake of wine, pause now and
ask yourselves the question, whether
you are prepared lor the miserable
late of a drunkard’s wife.
Note. —’1 he above sketch is no im

Virtue.—Virtue is not a mushroom
that spriugeth up of it self in one night,
when we are asleep or regard it not,
tut a delicate plant that groweth slowly
arid tenderly, nicdmg much pains to cul
tivate it. Neither is vice a spirit that
will bo conjured away with a charm, slain
hy a single blow, or dispaethed by one
stab. Who then, will be so foolish as to
leave the eradicating of vice and the plan
ting of virture in its place for a few years
or weeks? Yet he who procrastinates
his repentance and amendment groossly
does so with his eyes open he abridges
the time allotted for the longest and most
important wo:k ho has to perform ;be
is a fool.
Falsehood.--! his is a vice, totally un
woitby ihe individual who would m.in
tain a nspeotable standing in sociefyt
A great moralist has obrerved : ‘‘lt 'is
ca«y. and apparently so natural, to deny
what, you eamiot be so easily convicted
of, that a savage, as well as a child, lies
to excuse hitnsdt, almost as instinctively
as ho raises hi-* hand to protect Ms bead.’*
Parents should he 'most particular in cor
recting their children for breaches of
truth. No vice fructifies more than false
hood. It is the rank weed that earliest
takes root in the human mind, and as it
increases in growth it spreads like the
upas tree, every branch becomes a fresh
vice, until the to jre soul is poisoned
