TEMPERANCE.
From the N. O. Sunday Times.
The Wifo toßer Intemperate Husband
Stay, stay, my husband, do not leave
Our cottage home to-night ;
A storm is near —there’s not aetar
To guide thy steps aright.
And hark ! tlie wailing of the wind
Seem like a spirit's moait;
I tremble, dearest—df> not
And leave me here alone,
I pray thee. Arthur, hasten not
Where maudlin tihulds meet,
Whose noisy mirth and curses loud
Awake the slumbering sireet.
Clasp thg strange Uireean cup,
R fuse tjie wine to sip,
Else soon the udder's poison fang
■VYillifmteu on thy lip.
-Oh, stay ! and I will sing the songs
Trilled in our happier years,
When the first power of love was owned
And I nevy nought of tears ;
When the sheeny pasties rose in air,
With laughter usd wi'h jest.,
And thon didst seek, like errant knig ! t,
Thy loyalty to test.
And we’ll speak of him who placed
This trusting hand in thine,
And smiled and hless’d us,when tliousaidst
“Now, Mary, thou art mine
Os her whose bright, yet tender glance,
Bespoke masernal pride,
For was I rot to tread life’s path
Iu safety by thy side ?
Think of thy father! he whore form
Lies ’neath the churchyard sod—
Thou wert his treasure and his pride—
He loved thee next to God .
Think of thy mother! of the kiss
She pressed upon thy cheek—
Thou set Ist it yet, that la-t curess
From lips that could not speak.
Qh ! let their memory check thee now
In this insane career;
When reason reigns, fiom all the crowd
I cannot find thy peer.
I do not chide thee, dearest, no ;
I ask thee but to break
Those bonds that mar thy noble soul—
Oh, rend them tor my auke !
Come, you must hear our Nina sing
Her sjipple evening hymn,
And list the prayers for “dear papa,”
She’ll improvise for hint.
She has a thousand winning ways,
The artless little dove I
And the language that she speaks isfull
Os pleasantness and love.
Our cradled Archie—friends declare
How much he looks like me,
But when he smiles, ah ! then they say
lie most resembles thee—
Does he not look a chemb plumed
- x.c&Hlo'Vft'd'. for, not live
It “birdie” were to die.
Arthur, you weep; what is't you say,
You’ll rer.4 the inebriate chain?
Ob. joyful words! oh, promise blest!
That brings me trust again !
Father ! my heart, late surrow-filled,
Now overflows with bliss;
I thank The u tiir ali Thy blessings, but
I thank Thee most for ti is.
Startling Discovery.
A party of young people, recently
amusing tliemselyes at tlte house of
Rev. Mr, White, near 'Terre Haute,
Indiana, were suddenly somewhat
startled at hearing the croaking of a
frog in their midst.
While they were vainly searching
for tlie strange visitant—an unwel
come one certainly in a front parlor—
they noticed that one ot their number,
a young girl of seventeen, named Ma
ry Copaxi, turned as white as a sheet,
and laid her hood upon her breast.
The croaking continued, and Mi-s
Copaxi suddenly uttered a terrible
scream and swooned away. As her
young companions gathered around
her, applying the proper restoratives,
they made a startling discovery that
thrilled them with horror !
Mr, White coining in at this junc
tion, inquired as to the meaning of
tlie strange tumult, anc] was informed
that the croaking of a frog was heard
proceeding from tlie stomach of Miss
Copaxi.
Yes, there could be no mistake; the
noise of the frog came from the young
girl!
She swooned away three times be
fore the kind minister could inspire
her with sufficient hardihood and cool
ness to endure her be
came a Christaiu; and hejgpPffpanior.s
were obliged to carry lier home in a
carriage.
Dr. Williams, a promising young
surgeon, on a visit to some relatives
in this place, was immediately sent for.
He perceived at once that his patient
was a difficult case; but with remark
able self-possession and a steady hand,
lie .')t once proceeded with the work
which could alone save the girl’s life.
Before night he had made an incision
iu the flesh just below the breast, and
extracted a large green speckled frog,
plipost four inches in length.
The girl is now doing well and will
reco v er. —Rochester TJn ion.
Poor, —A gentleman one day asked
a little girl, an-only chikl-, how many
sisters she had; and' was told .“three
or four.” Her mother asked Mary,
when they were alone, what induced
her to tell such an untruth, “Why,
mamma,” cried Mary, “I didn’t want
him to think you were so poor that
you hadn’t but one child. Wouldn’t
be thought we were dreadful poor?’
