Praying for a Husband.
A correspondent of the Rochelle (HI J
Register locates the following near that
place. Though the story is considerable
older than the correspondent, it is worth
ing: *
A young lady heard that if she would
go out and pray three successive nights
the Lord would tell her who she should
marry. Now, it happened that her fa
ther had a young man in his employ
who had considerable wit and good hu
mor about him. One evening be WM
out in an apple tree after fruit, when ha
heard someone praying something Uks
this; “Q, Lard, who will j marry?”—■
The idea popped into Doyle’s (that bet
ing the young man’s name) mind that' he
would have a little sport at her expense.
So-he spoke in a changed voice, and said,
“Doyle.” “No, Lord, not Doyle,” cried
the astonished yonng lady. “\fes, Doyle,
or no one,” again sounded from the tree
top in a sober hollow voice. She aro.o
and entered the house, resolved to try
again the next evening. Os course Doylo
did not wish to spoil the fun, and so the
next evening found him seated in the
tree top. lie did have long to wait be
fore the young husband seeker came,
and commenced praying in the same way
that she did the proceeding evening, and
received the same answer. The next
evening also found her under the tree
pleading to know her future husband’s
name, and again she heard the answer,
“Doyle, or no one.” She arose, feeling
satisfied that she must marry Doyle.-s-
The next morning she met him and asked
him why he did not dress up and put oa
better clothes. He said he was not able.
“Well,” said she, “father is rich and he
will let you hate money.” He took
that for a pretty good hint and bought a
suit of clothes. In a short time he offer
ed his heart and hand, and was accepted.
After their marriage, he told her how
her prayers were answered. If any of
the fair readers of-this story should think
of praying for a husband, do not go un
der a tree, or if you do, be sure and ex
amine it closely and see if there is any
one to answer it.
Registration Incident-
The colored incumbent of the registra
tion bench, yesterday went out to en
courage some of the freedme.t to come
forward. Meanwhile the trial of Major
Jones, agent for the Freedmeu’s Bureau,
for perjury in taking the iron-clad, had
been going on, Mr. Robb, meeting a
Ireedman, asked him to come forward and
register; to which the response was,
“What’s dat?” “Why, come and pro
pare yourself to vote,” said Robb. —
“Vole ! vote for who ?” said Sambo.—
“Why,” was the reply, “for whom you
see fit.” “Well, does it cost anything!”
“ Why no, all you have to do ie to go
and take an oath—that’s all.” The
freedman thought a moment, and then
replied, “Well, I guess I won’t take it—-
look yonder whar dey got old Mr. Jones
for taking an oath ! No, sir ; I ain’t goin’
to take no oath !’’
Our frcedmen are quite cautious, wa
heard of one advising his friends not to
vote; “for,” said he, “we’ve got just
sense ’nough to vote ourselves back into
slavery ’gin.” —Southern Georgian,
A Disgusting Pet.—The Ladoga
(Iowa) Herald States that Mr. Benjamin
Dodson, who lives a few miles from that
town, has a little daughter four or five
years old, who has for a few weeks past
had a singular kind of pet to play with.—
The little giri like all other children,
has a “play house” in the yard fixed up
nice and cozy, where she has little dishes
to amuse herself with. One day last
week she came to the house to get some
thing to put on her table, saying she was
going to have dinner, and asked her fa
her to come out and see her pet rabbit,
lie said he would go in a few minutes,
and when he came to her play house, ho *
observed a large snake lying in the child’s
lap eating, taking bite about with her
from the same piece of bread. The fa
ther killed the suake, and for some timo
it seemed as if it would be almost impos
sible to pacify the child for the loss of"
her strange playmate.
tVoNDEBrrL Tries of a Ciuxese Ma
gician.—A Marvelous trick, performed by a
Chinese magician, is thus described by Ibu
Batatu, an Arab, who travelled in the four
tenth century : He took a wooden ball with
holes in it, through which long
thongs were passed, and laying holt of one of
| these, slung it into the air. It went so high
iwe lost sight of st altogether, there now re-<
! mained only a little end of the thong in the
’ conjurer’s hand, and ho desired one of the
j boys who assisted him to lay hoit and mouut.
He did so, climbing by the thong, and we
lost sight of him also. The conjurer then
called to him three limes, but getting no an
swer, snatched up a knife, as if in a great
rage; laid holt of the thong, and disppeared
also. liy and by lie threw down one of the
boy’s hands, then a foot, then the trunk,
and then the other hand and foot, and last of
all, the head, then lie came down himself,
all puffing and panting, and with his clothes
all bloody; but presently be took the boy’s
lim. sand laid them together in their places,
and gave a tick, when presto! there was
the hoy, who got up and stood before them.”
