The following which we take from

The management of this Company

Freedmen’s School.— I The examination of!
the Freedmen’s School, under the manage- i
merit of Mrs. E. A. Christian, timl her two (
beautiful and accomplished daughters, came
off yesterday. The school numbers nearly .
two hundred scholars, all under good discip
line. The teachers deserve great credit (or
(lie faillml manner in which they have dis
charged tlicit’ duty to those committed to
theirjtraining. They certainly know bow
to impart instruction, as the advancement of
their pupils will test fy.
We regret that messing duties at the of
fice prevented us from remaining as long as
wc would have desired. The scholars were
examined in Reading, Spelling, Wiiting.
Geography and Arithmetic, and it is aston- '
Hiring with what case and rapidity they
went through with the different rec
itations. Tiny all did welt, and proved be
yond a doubt, that both teachers arj pupils
| hud not been idle in the school room.
These were the closing exercises f.,r the
season, and consequently brought together a
large number of our colored friends, the most
of them however, being from the oily. The
children were all nicely clad, and made quite
! a genteel appearance.
I After the examination of scholars in the
! forenoon, Miss iSalue Banks, ouc of the
j teachers above referred to. delivered a well
; written and timely address (o the pupils.-
We bad not the pleasure ot hearing thisad
; dress, but learn from those who did. that it
! contained some very good and wholesome
advice to the colored people, and well deliv
ered. Vfe have been requested by a number
; of our citizens, to solicit a copy of it. for ptib
i lieation, and wc hope our fair fticral will fa
vor us with a copy, when the request shall
| be made in a more formal manner.
, .Speeches were then made by Maj, Fum.oW,
—, and G. A. Lofton, Esq.; a portion
ol the remarks of lire latter gentleman only,
we heard. Rev. U’.u. Ravens, (colored,)
then came forward and made a few appro,
j rinto remarks, which were well received by
his hearers, after which,a recess of an hoar
was taken for dinner.
On re assembling in the afternoon, Cupt.
Rohektsos, Agent of the Buroeu, at this
place, gave some good advice to the colored
people, which we hope they will net upon.—
Maj Furlow Was then called upon, and de
livered ouc of the best addresses for the oc
casion, we ever litanl horn him. lie has a
manner of speaking to the colored people
that-few men possess. What he says is plain,
and iead.es the understanding of bis hearers.
At this stage of the proceedings a hettfy
ram fame up, and the crowd was forced to
take shelter in a large building near by,,
where they were addressed by A. R. Broww
Esq., and others. We left the ground aficM
the conclusion of Mnj. F’s. remarks, anl
therefore, are unable to make arty report ol
what transpired afterwards. 1
Altogether, tliopneeting was a very liarmol
ttiotis one, and our colored friends seemed til
enjoy themselves very much, and behaved ill
a very becoming manner.

j Mr. Editor On Tuesday and Wednes
day last, as one of a Committee -invited by
I Messrs. D idd & Hudson, 1 attended their
School examination, and have been requested
by the Committee, to write for Tour columns,
sonio notice of the fame.
Messrs. Dodd & Hudson,' joint Principals
of :t High Mi le b'oliQol in this place—Amer
icas, are both in the prime of life and health,
and very evide.-itly, are actuated by a consci
entious resolution to do their whole duty ns
faithful at and efficient teachers, and by a laud
able and high ambition to build up for them -
selves and Americus, a Male School of the
highest grade.
They are not without previous leputatiou
as instructors of youth ; Mr. Dood being
long and extensively known in South ami
j South-Western Georgia; and Mr. Hudson,
i equally so, in Middle Georgia, us practical
land experienced teachers. The committee
j were pleased to find among the number of
' pupils—amounting to some 50—quite a num
Iter ot interesting boys and young men from
Ia distance—and we would take occasion, in
this public manner, to recommend to parents
a id Guardians, in search of a healthy locali
ty and of a practical education for their sous,
and .lighters and wards, Americus. as the place,
and iter teachers na the Instructors
Ibit to return to the matter more in point.
The Examination lasted Tuesday and Wed
nesday, and was attended by quite a number
of visitors. Having attended the entire time,
I it may be allowable to state that 1 have nev-
I er witnessed a more impartial, thorough and
i satisfactory examination. On other like oc
casions, I have been astonished at the undue
I development-of the memory, like the engorg
ed liver of a goose fattened for sonic gorman
dizing t pieure ; but I have never before seen
boys examined, who showed such proficiency
in the reason of things, in the “whys and
wherefores,” and in a thorough knowledge
of the fundamental terms, propositions and
principles of the various studies, This man
ner of training and storing the mind, which
Messrs. Dodd & Hudson claim to practice, is
certainly preferable to the more common,{su
perficial smattering of facts and figures, tech
nical terms and showy propositions, The
Committee were particularly pleased with Mr
j Dodd as a teacher of Mathematics in its va
! lions departments, and equally so, with Mr.
Hudson, as a teacher of the Latin and Greek
Languages.
I Several facts were particularly noticeable,
i First—Hie foundation sill of the supcrstruc
| litre of a good Education ;—the boys were
(Able not only to state the facts, but to give
■lie reason why, it is so. Again, there was
"evidently no sot selected lessons for the occa
sion. They were examined promiscuously,
here and there, and generally on such subjects
and in such places, as the examining Com
»iittcc, or some patron or visitor iu the au
icnce indicated;
Not to be tedious, the examination was
| faithful anti searching—creditable to the
-Principals of the School, and not less so to
their pupils. Distinctions as to grade of
scholarship could be easily made ; but the
Committee would rather refrain, and exhort
I the whole school to commence the next term
I with renewed energies and high .resolves ;
for you may be assured, boys, Messrs. Dodd
& Hudson’s system of examination, will be
tray the . laggard.
Tim general public were more interested in
the exhibition than in the examination.—
The spacious Chapel of the Female College
building, tendered for the occasion,
was literally jammed and crammed, on
the evenings of Tuesday and Wednesday,
by audiences appreciative and delighted.
1 The. exercises each evening lasted, until
the solemn, deep-mouthed monitor, the
Town Clock, announced the departure of
one, and the approach of another day. Dec
lamations, Debates, “The Dead .Shot,'’ Long
street’s “Sage Conversation,” and the“Tood
les,” redolent of dear old Burton’s memory,
interspersed with most excellent songs and
music, gave that “variety which is the spice
of life,” and of such occasions. Mrs. Byrd,
Misses Maxwell, Misses Malone, Missßivins,
Miss Oliver, Miss Rees and Miss Cooper, en
tertained cultivated ear with some tine mod
ern singing and piano music ; but the great
public heart responded to the delightful and
inspiring strains of the String Band, as with
violins, flute and cornet, Messrs. Willev,
Bruner, Hawkins, Palmer and Foster, illus
trated, not only thejtruth of the very poeti
cal couplet—
— “Music linth charms to soothe nj savage,
Burst a roclv and split a cabbage,”
But, that Orpheus like, they could even silence
and please the noisy boys.
So much for the music and the amateur,
it may be the connoiseur performers of our
town. TVcwanl lo hear them again and often;
but now wo must pay our compliments to
the boys.
Boys, bright-eyed, uproarous, übiquitous,
young America boys! In declamation, ex
tracts and original, poetical and prosy, com
ic and serious, they proved themselves young
orators, promising to rival Demosthenes and
Cicero. The motto of th(jjr programme o 1
exercises was useless:
“Don’t view us with a critic’s eye
But pass our imperfections by. ”
'They had no imperfections, or only enough
to cause us to remember they were boys I
Where all acquitted themselves so honorably,
why- make distinctions? I will however state
that a prize for the best extract declamation,
was contested for by the younger young
Americas, and would call attention to the re
port of a Committee appointed to award the
same, which I furnish you, Mr. Editor, |for
publication. The report was read and the
prizes delivered by Col Lofton, who did so
in some very appropriate and felicitous re
marks. At the request of the Principals of
the School, he also delivered a prize of merit
to Milton Hudson, for excellence in spelling-
Mr. Editor, there is much more, if time
and space allowed, that could be said in favor
| of Americus, our Female College, our Male
Schools, both Messrs. Dodd &■ Hudson, and
Dii. Randall it .Stanford, and ae\ eralothers,
Li t me close by saying, let our teachers re
tui n to the old fashioned, faithful school ex
aminations, and the accustomed exhibitions
that attended them. Let us appreciate and
encourage education. The proper education
of the mind and heart of tho rising genera
tion, is the only hope of this or any country,
and is the only foundation upon which a
Republican Government can be built, to
withstand the floods dml tempests of igno
rance and vice. This is the universal lesson
of history.

The Oonimittee ; appointed by Professors.
Dodd A Hudson, (6 a ward the prize fur the
best delivered extract, in their School decla
mation, on the 25th ult., bog leave to make
the following report :
1. We have found it impossible to discrim
inate, with any degree of certainty, between
the declamation of two of the contestants. -
Lett Warren and Lewis Wood, both ot whom
we believe to have excelled to some extent,
the remainder of the class. To them we
have awarded the prize without distinction,
to be shared equally.
2. Without making the least invidious dis
tinction, for truly the whole class did well,
t-Bft Committee, if it docs not exeted their
pi ivilege, wi.-h to notice the performance of
lirice Adams and Rosser Malone, as, perhaps,
approximating nearest the declamation of
the successful contestants.
3. In conclusion, the Committee beg leave
to pay their compliments, both to the Class
aid their very able Instructors, for their
highly interesting entertainment. We deem
it a complete success, and sincerely trust
and believe that itis an earnest. o< the future
prosperity of the educational department in
