Six Degrees or Decnk.eness.-Tlio most foolish predicament a man can get iniu is to get drunk. In drunkeness eve ry man shows his strongest and most ar dent passion. There are six kinds of drunkards, and if you get into a city drinking place where there are a dozen men under the influenoe ofadiquor, you will be sure to find those six different characters, representing different ani mals. The first is ape drunk. He leaps, be sings, and yells, and dances, making all of “monkey shines” to excite the laugh ters of his fellows. Terribly silly is the drunken clown. The second is tiger-drunk, lie breaks the bottles, breaks the chairs, breaks the head of his fellow-oarousers, and is full of blood and thunder, ilis eyes are fired with vengance, and his soul raves with murderous fury. Os this sort are those who abuse their families. The third is hog-drunk lie rolls in the dirt on the floor, slobbers and grunts, and going into tho street makes his bed in the first ditch or filthy corner he may happen to fail into. Ho is heavy, lump ish and sleepy, and cries in a grunting way for little more to drink. The fourth is puppy drunk. lie will weep for kindness, and whine his love and hug you in his arms, and kiss you with his slobbery lips, and proclaim how much he loves you. You are the best mau he ever saw, he will lay down his money or his life for you. The fifth is owl-druuk. He is wise iu his own conceit. No man must differ with him for his word is law. He is true in politics, and all matter must be taken as authority. His arm is the strongest, his horse the fastest, his turnips the larg est, his town the finest of all in the land. The sixth and last animal in the men agerie is the fox-drunkard. He is crafty, ready to trade horses and cheat if he can. Keen to strike a bargain, leering {around with low cunning, peeping through ciacks listening under the caves, watching for some suspicious thing, sly as a fox, sneak ing as a wolf. He is the meanest drunk ard of all. Severe But Trae. —The Chicago Times expresses its opinion in respect to negro suffrage in the following forcible words: The attempt to make the negroes dom inant in the South through the agency of a military despotism is a crime in com parison with which the rebellion was % virtue. There is every element of mean ness in it. I f is cowardly revenge. It is a deeleratlon by white American citizens that ignorant and degraded negroes are their superiors. It is the elevation of sin and ignorance over intelligence and virtue. Hell is not punishing a crime more enormous or one which approaches it in meanness The military command er who will lend aid to its prepetration is putrid. He is working for the accom plishment of a villainy more horrible and and loathsome than was prepetrated by the hoary old lecher, Cenci. A,correspondent of the Maine Farmer, who raises seme fifty tons of tho hard shell squashes, says that without the seed they cause a greater flow of milk than any other vegetable he ever used. By way of experiment, one, season he fed them with seed, and the milk considera bly decreased. In three days after taken cut the seed, “the milk was double and quite as nob.”
