This being placed on a bttr rol, “the biddie,” after laying ore. looked for it, and finding nothing, laid ap her, and so continued for several hours. “Oh, that is nothiug,” says our friend, down east, “my father made a nest of (ha{ kind and placed it, with the hen upon it. over a hogshead and she laid it. full of e.:crs- Tho next, day ho seta dead hen upon the nest and, hatched every egg in two weeks.” “And every egg hatched two chickens,” said a bystander, thinking to add a good SO* quel to his story, “No they didn’t,” said Jonathan; ‘"you needn’t try To make me lie, for y-ou can’t,” OceTuen Must Come.— “ Generation after generation,” says aline writer, “have felt ag we now f cl, and their lives were as active ag our own. They passed like a vapor, while nature wore the same aspect of beauty as when her Creator commanded her to be.—, They will have tho same attraelions for our offspring yet unborn, that she had once for us ns children. Yet a little while and all will have happened. Throbbing hearts shall be stifled, and we shall be at rest. Our funeral shall find Its way, and prayer will bo said, and wo shall be left alone in silence in. darkness for the worms- And it may be for a short time we shall be spoken of, but the things of life will creep in, and our namc3 will socn be forgotten. Days will continue to move on, and laughter and song will bo heard in the room which ho died; and eyes that mourned for us will be dried, and glist en again with joy ; and even our children will cease to think of us and will not remem ber to lisp our names.” Tnn Local Editor as a Legislator.—A New Haven local editor has been sent to the Connecticut Legislature, whereat nn ex change discourses as follows .- 1 “fFo should like to look in upon him when betakes bis seat there for the first time.— There would be a malicious pleasure in yel ling ‘copy’ at him. Wouldn’t he start though? Ten to one he would grab his hat and hurry after an item. If a member should request him to notice what he was saying, he couldnt notice it short of the usual rates, one dollar a line. It, would be some time before he pould keep his ic it when a fire-bell rang.— He would find himself going to the police siation of morning, and hanging around the courthouse. If at any time, a lobby man should slip a roll of greenbacks into his han.d he should whisper, “certainly—l understand —a first rate notice.” A .Se 1 ious Question. —ifavo you made one heart happy to-day? llow calmly can you seek your pillow, how sweetly sleep? In all this world thera is nothing so sweet as giving comfort to the distressed. Many sighs and tears are caused by our own thoughtlessness.— How many a daughter wrings the soul of a fond mother by acts of unkindness and ingratitude ? llow many husbands, by one little word, make a whole day of sad hours sod-unkind thoughts? llow many wives, by angry recriminations, many brothers and sisters meet but to injure and vex each other, making wounds that no human heart can heal ? But if each one worked upon the maxim of stri ving to make some heart happy—jeal ousy, revenge, madness, hate, with their kindred evil associates, would for ever leave the earth. . Integrity must be the architect and tidiness the upholsterer- It must be warmed by affection and lighted with cheerfulness, and industry must be the ventilator, renewing the atmosphere, bring ing Jin fresh salubrity day by day, while over all, as a protecting glory and canopy, nothing will suffice except the blessing of God.
