Dr. W. W. Ford, Dentist, Americas,
Go.:
Detr Sir: I seo from a Card which
yon published in the Sumter Republi
can oi tue 23d of April, that some un
known enemy of yours hail reported
through the oountiy that yon had given
some lady chloroform and extracted all of
her teeth without her knowledge or con- i
sent, when she only desired to have one
tooth taken out
I wish to make public the following
facts : On the 19th of February, 1869, I
took my wife to your office for the express
purpose of having all her teeth extracted\
we both told you that we had como for
that purpose. After examining her teeth
carefully, wo a!l agreed that it was neces
sary to take thorn all out. You at first
declined to give her chloroform, and did
succeed in getting out three of her teeth
without it. .My .wife then became so
nervous that we all come to tho conclu
sion that the only way we could succeed
in getting all her teeth out would bo to
give her something to destroy tho pain-
At my request you then extracted all her
lower teeth without pain to her; youthen
proposed to stop and take out her npper
teeth at some fnfcuro time, but I in« .ted
that you tako them oil out and save the
tronblo of my coming again and of giving
thoj chloroform again, and at my request
you did extract the Iwiiuncc of her teeth
before she recovered from the chloroform
and ether. She remained at your house
about three hours after tho operation was
completed. She then rode homo in a
bu 8gy* » distance of seven miles, without
any bad effects whatever ; her gums heal
ed as readily and with as little trouble as
any persons I ever saw.
In the latter part of the summer yon
made her a full set of teeth which she has
been wearing constantly ever since, with
perfect satisfaction, eating on them with
comfort and ease anyth : ng that she do-
sired. Iu fact, she lias often said she
would not tako five hundred dollars for
them. These are all the facts connected
with the case just os they occurred, so far
as you were concerned. I will now give
you my reasons for giving these facts.—
About two months after you extracted my
wife’s teeth I was asked by a gentleman
in Americas if you had given my wife
chloroform and extracted all her teeth
against our wishes for the purpose of get
ting a chance to make her a set of teeth.
He said he had heard the rumor going
around. I told him ** that it was false
and not h word of truth in it, that we
went to your office for that purpose, and
that I was present all the time and that
you done nothing but what we wanted
you to do. Some time after that a gen
tleman asked my wife the same question,
she indignantly told him that the whole
rumor was false from beginning to end.
A month or two after,-the same question
was again asked me by a gentleman, who
stated that he had heard if. I gave him

the same answer—that the rumor was
false from Itcginning to end without the
shadow of a foundation in troth. From
these facta I conclude that it ia my wife
that they have accused you of treating so
badly, by depriving her of a full set of
good natural teeth, thiough the influence
of chloroform.
I now say that whoever started such a
rumor made it up without any founda
tion in truth whatever. It is false all tbe
way through ; neither my wife nor myaelf
ever made any remark to any - one that
conld in any way bo construed into such
a falsehood. The whole thing has been
made np, in my opinion, by some design
ing person whose interest it is to injure
you professionally, knowing well that
they conld not attack your work with a
semblance of truth, therefore they seek to
injure your professional character and
integrity. Youcanuaethia in anyway
