will throb with gratified emotion in the reflec
tion that the beloved object, “so early lost, so
deeply mourned” will have a place in a na
tion’s affection, and will live on the page of
history.
The loss sustained by our sister State of
South Carolina, has been unprecedentedly se
vere, Nothing in the history of this war,
Upon the bloodiest fields that have been fought,
can compare w ith it. Even the gallant Mis
sissippi regiment at Buena Vista suffered far
less. Such constancy and devotion to duty
Under the galling fire that swept them down
has scarcely a parallel in the career ot veteran
troops. It evinced not only the most deter
mined gallantry, but a perfection ot discipline
alike creditable to officers and men. Ihis
little band of heroes have nobly sustained the
martial* fame of the Palmetto State. The peo
ple of Georgia will sympathize deeply in the
loss of her sons, and join in fervent wishes that
those who are reported as wounded, may all
live to return with their honorable scars in
safety to their friends. It appears from the
account we publish from the Delta that the
lire of the Palmetto Regiment told with terri
ble effect upon the enemy. The survivors of
that bloody fight will have the satisfaction of
knowing that they did their full share in
avenging their fallen comrades.
Victories near the City Mexico.
The triumphs of the American arms, as de
tailed in our columns to-day, adds additional j
lustre to the national power, and confers honor
and renown upon those who achieved them.
These brilliant victories, while affording causes
for pride and admiration, bring with them
sources of extended private affliction and
mourning. Some in our community and im
mediate neighborhood, are made to feel the
heavy pressure of the latter.
The entire community deeply sympathise w ith
the afflicted parents and relatives of Lieutenant
David Adams in his early fall. Bold, brave,
and generous, possesed of every manly virtue,
he was idolized by his family, beloved by his
friends, honored and respected by his acquaint
ances. Their consolation consists in the fact
that he diecl fighting bravely beneath the flag
of his country. Ills name is indissolubly con
nected with that country’s fknc.C, as one of its
chivalric sons, and will be remembered and
cherished in the hearts of his countryman.
’SVe perceive among the names of the woun
ded that of Lieut, Gardner, whose parents
reside in this city, lie is said to havt been i
wounded severely, but we trust not dangerous
ly, afulhope that the deep solicitude of his re
latives and friends will soon be removed by his
■Speedy recovery.
It is ardently to be desired that the negotia
tions sos peace will be successful, and that the
■next news which reaches us will proclaim an
ind to this sad and destructive war. — Chroni- j

The Eight Hornei Cotton Worm.
AVe Vvtre yesterday shown one of these mon- i
htrous worms, taken from the plantation ot i
Mr. Miller, on Beach Island, and another from
the, plantation of Mr. McCey, about a mile
from this city. They arc truly a formidable
looking opponent, but unless their numbers
increase rapidly, they will not do much dam- j
hge, as a “little nigger” with a good stick,
could master them much sooner than the j
small caterpillar, which is difficult to find ;
among the leaves, when voting. While speak- ;
i.hg of caterpillars, we may also mention that |
Mr. McCoy exhibited to us several Cotton
leaves taken from his plantation, containing
the genhihe caterpillar deposit.
The New York Journal of Commerce of 9th
inat. says—We rcgrCt to state that the very
respectable house of Prime, Ward & Co. have
ehspcftded payment, awaiting further advices
■from the other side.
The failure of several Londofi h6hscs was
the cause of this calamity.
The correspondent of the flail inhere Ameri
can, under date of New York, SCpl. 5, P. M.,
says :— There teas much gloom to-day ashong the
business men , caused by the failure of Messrs,
PHme, Ward & Co.! For what amount is not
known, fiar is it thought that they themselves
krthw. .
It is said they were offered if they
would agree to go oh; but that they declined
it. The statements which caraC out by the
late steamer caused a run upon the house by
depositors and creditors to such an extent as
to induce them 'to stop at once.
The failure of such a ifldusc ficctssarilV cre
ated considerable panic in Wall sti'ect.

The Cotton Crop.
We learn with regret, says the Franklin
Planters’ Banner, of the 2d instant, that the
worm has made its appearance in Rapides, and
it is supposed that half a crop will not be
■made. The news of the appearance of the
worm m the upper parishes is confirmed,
On Saturday last, says the Opelousas Whig
of the 2d inst,, we heard that the cotton
Worms had made their appearance on the plan
tation of Dr. Martin, about two miles distant
from our town, and on the follow ing day took
occasion to visit it. We had scarcely entered
the field, before we had discovered that the
cotton was literally covered with the real cot
ton eater, which has destroyed the cotton
plant throughout the whole cotton region for
the last seven years. There having been so
many false reports in regard to the appearance
of the caterpillars in this parish, that we were
disposed to doubt whether they would come
at all, from tne fact of many persons mistaking
the common grass worm for the cotton worm,
but, we arc now convinced that they are on
■several plantations.”
The Cotton Worm. —We are informed by
many of out planters, says the Natchitoches
Chronicle, that there is no longer any doubt of
the presence of the caterpillars in the cotton
freids. Within the last week, they have made
their appearance on almost every plantation in
the parish, and commenced their w r ork of de
struction. We learn from our exchange pa
pers that they have also appeared in most of
the parishes of the State.—A. O. Bee, Ith inst.

ONE DAY IN ADVANCE OF THE MAIL.
BALTIMORE, Sept. 11,5 P. M.—The markets

Ihe weather has been disagreeable. It has

MORI LE Sept. 8 • — Colton.. —At the close of our j
last weekly review we left the market very firm,
holders stiff in their demands, and prices tending
upwards. During the past week there has been
a good demand with, for the season, heavy sales,
at gradually improving prices. The advance is Ic.
to the quotations given in our last, and is
owing mainly to the unfavorable reports of the
growing crops from all sections of the coiton grow
ing country, which come pouring in upon us by
every mail. The conviction is now universal that
the crop of the present year will not exceed that
i of last, and this conviction rendered holders indif
ferent in regard to sales unless at higher prices
than hare been ruling. 'The sales of the week
toot up 5000 bales, in daily transactions as follows:
Wednesday 1300, Thursday GOO. Friday 1500, Sat
urday 800, Monday GOO and Tuesday 200 bales.—
The purchases have been pi incipally for the Nor
thern and French markets, and the demand con
fined to tke higher grades of cotton, on which des
criptions, it uill he observed, the advance has
been greatest. The week closes with a quiet
market, threngii xVPtk no indication of a decline in
prices. On the other hand, holders are very stiff
in their pretentions, and evince no anxiety to sell
even at the present advanced rates.. One cause
of the quiet that prevaded this market yesterday,
probably was the reception of the advances from
Europe per Guadelquiver. We imagine these ac
counts will have no perceptible influence ea-onr
market.
