CHARLESTON, May 2. — Cotton. —Received ■
the past week by railroad, 5,972 hales; by water }
and wagons, 3278 bales; together 9,250 bales (cor- ;
responding week last y ear 3097 bales.) Exported
in the same time to foreign ports, 6711 bales; •
coastwise,4ooo bales; making the total exports ot
the week. 10,711 bales, and leaving on hand h a
stock of 54,230 bales, inclusive ol 19,173 bales same '
time last y*ear.
The total receipts since our last report amount (
to 41,111 making a grand total since the Ist of
September up to the latest dates of 2,432,892 bales,
against 1,987,478 bales the same time last year, | i
and 1,642,457 bales the year previous, increase 1
of total receipts 447,415 bales, and a decrease ot
about 100 bales since last week. I
In our review of the 26ih nit. we rep rted, for ; <
the week then clos J, an animated, and, at times, j t
very exciting demand, both from the trade as well ; i
as speculators. The total transactions of the week j
had looted upwards of 15,200 bales, prices having j '
ranged in favor of holders from \ a over those i
previously obtained. Since then the m arket has
been in quite an unsettled state, and. at the same i j
lime, of a very depressed character- On Friday, j
the first day of our commercial week, after the •
sales, with a very moderate,.demand, had reached I
about 750 bales at former raies, the arrival of the ;
Cambria, at Halifax, was received by telegraph, '
together with a brief account of the state of the |
* Cotton market at Liverpool up to the 7th ult. They ■
were of i ather an unfavorable nature, but consid
erable doubts were entertained at the time about 1
the correctness of the quotations, which were £ a j
decline. After the promulgation of these ac- 1
counts buyers withdrew, and the market came to
a stand for the remainder of the day. During
Saturday, and Monday also, very little was doing,
as neither party evinced the lea-t disposition to
operate until the arrival of the private accounts
on Tuesday. That day being far a vanced before
they came to hand, anil being then engaged during
the lemainder with their p rusal, de-alers had no
opportunity of testing the market, and the day
closed with the sales ol but 72 bales, those of the
two days previous having amounted to 238 bales.
On Wednesday several buyers again made their
anpearance, but were only partially met by hold
era, the transactions reached 1274 bales, and
although prices were somewhat irregular it was
generally considered that buyers had operated
at fully:| lower than during the week previous
Yesterday the market was again brought to nearly
a complete stand, consequent ot the reported ar
rival in the morning papers ol the Hibernia, wuich
had been announced by telegraphic despatch thq
previous evening. As. however, no further par
ticulars of her arrival were received in the course
of yesterday, holders appeared unwilling to con
tinue offering their stock, and the sales of the day
were limited, in consequence, to some 60 hales
only, making the total sales of the week 2407 bales,
at the following particulars ; 85 bales at
/ 7-16,136 at 7s, 44S at 7), 112 at 7£. 123 at 7, 106
at 6 15-16. 18 at 6J; 306 at 6|. 101 at 6£; 150 at
6 7-16, 1-7 at 6|.34> at 6 5-16. -125 at at 6 3-16,
19 at 6J, 82 at 6 cents
The following quot#i-ms, Liverpool descrip
tions, are designed to give a criterion ol the Mar

which there was a regular demand;

NEW’ ORLEANS, April2B.— Cotton. —The an

of the week continued on Thursday*, 7500 bales
having found purchasers. Yesterday the demand

to-day reach 9000 hales, making a total for the
week of 42,300 bales. The purchases have again
