[ Telegraphed for die Charleston Courier.]
New Orleans, Sept. 16, 10 A. M.
The sales of Cotton yesterday amounted
only to one hundred bales, at lull prices.
The weather is not yet settled, and at pre
sent has a very stormy appearance.
The brig Charles Kershaw, Atchison, from
your port has just arrived.
£. tract of a letter from Capt. Harbeson, of the
ship Thos. Bennett, dated
“PANAMA, Aug. 18, 1818.
“ Dear Sirs: —I arrived here safe with the
ship Thomas Bennett, on the 11th ot this
month, and will sail for California to-morrow.
M e had head winds almost all the way from
iliu de Janeiro to \ alparaiso.
•>I doubled Cape Horn in eleven days, we
had a plenty of snow but no sea. 1 am very
much pleased with the ship; she is in good or
d r and a tine sea beat, every thing is all right
with us. We will take fifty-two passengers
from here for San Francisco.
Yours, Respectfully.”
A friend writes to the editor of the Moun
taineer from Newberry, as follows, under date
of 10th inst;
“ I am ju»t from a visit to my plantation in
Newberry district, and deeply regret to state
that I never before saw more sickness, or
knew of the health of the Districts below be
ing worse. It is exceedingly dry in the mid
dle country, and I am thoroughly convinced
that it is out of the question to expect or
think that more than half a Cotton crop can
by any means be made. The Cotton has cast
its blooms, shapes and forms, and in some in
stances the bolls ; and even those that are left
and will open, are, lor the most part, small
and light 1 ”
Maine Election.
In relation to the election in Maine on the
10th inst., we copy the following statement of
the result, so far as ascertained, from the Bos
ton Post of Thursday :
The Portland Argus of Wednesday thinks
T,'r. Hubbard, democrat, is elected governor
by Jhe people. It finds a democratic gain of
1,200 : n fourteen Kennebec towns.
By thw “truck, and dicker” union of free-soilers
and whigs in Cumberland county, two demo
cratic senator? are defeated, and Alvah Mars
ton and Marshal Cram are elected. The whigs
of Franklin county also adopted the freesoil
candidate for senator. Whigs and free-soilers
in Waldo united on one candidate for the Sen
ate, a whig free-soiler. The whigs and free
soilers supported a free-soil whig in Piscata
quis. Some of the whig papers recommended
a union between whigs and free-soilers in rep
resentative district whern the democrats have
the plurality. How far these coalitions and
recommendations may have affected the politi
cal character of the legislature chosen Mon
■day, remains to be seen. We can hardly be-
Jjeve that the democratic ascendency has been
overcome by such means. It is, however,
rathe.” astounding to hear Taylorites glorying
in such exploits almost in the same breath in
which the v denounce the opposition in Ver
mont.
JiAXER.—The Augusta Age, of the 13th in
stant, remarks:
We incline to the opinion, however, that Dr.
Hubbard is elected, by the people; that the
democrats are elected to the Senate, as fol
lows: 3in Y'ork, 3in Oxford, 3in Waldo, 1
in Aroostook, and lin Hancock; that the fe
deralists have elected 3 senators in Kennebec,
2 in Cumberland, 1 in Franklin, and 1 in Pis
cataquis, the last 4 by a coalition with the
hye .sobers; and that in the other 13 district’s
there .'® uo choice.
j[ n t l ie House of Representatives, so far as
heard from, democrats have gained 8, and
the opposition o. That body will undoubted
ly be democratic.
Ravages of thb Army Worm.— We re
ceived yesterday by the steamboat Gipsy, a
cotton plant, sent from West I’eliciana, to give
us an idea of the ravages of the worm since it
made its appearance on the plantations. It
the remainder of the plants are in the condi
tion of the one beiore us, the destruction must
be immense. Opening bolls and leaves are
eaten away to an extent which it is paintul to
behold. —JV. O. Pic., 12 th inst.

Augusta Market, Sept 19-
COTTON.—Our market opened on Wednesday last,
with but a limited demand, and so continued on Thurs
day, Friday and Saturday. On Monday, a better feeling
was manifested, and yesterday all offered met wilii
ready sale at full prices. The receipts continue very
light, in fact, of new Cotton, they are lighter than the
previous week. All of the new crop received, and put
on the market, has met with ready sale at prices rang
ing from 9f to 10 cents—Fair readily brings the latter
price. The sales of the week, have been so limited that
they are not worth reporting. We omit our quotations.
The demand runs on the new crop, which sells readily
at prices ranging from 9.j to 10 cents.
GROCERIES.—There never was a better business
done at this season, in the Grocery line, than that
transacted during all this month. Our merchants have
purchased heavy stocks, but they go off nearly as fast as
they arrive. There is no scarcity of any article that we
hear of, and but little change to notice in prices.
CORN.—No change to notice. The supply on hand
is light, but fully equal to the demand, which is con
fied to home wants. Sales have been made this week
of loose at 55, and in the ear 50 cents. No demand for
sack.
FLOUR.—There is little or no country in market.—
The bulk of our present stock consists of Canal and
Baltimore—the latter selling at 7 a 7.J per bbl. and the
former at 7\ a B—fancy brands retailing at $9.
BACON,—The Stock on hand is heavy, and the arti
cle is du lof sale. Sides are still selling at 6s, Should
ers at 5 to 5.1, and Hams from 8 to 19 cents.
BAGGING.—There is a good demand for this article,
but transactions are confined to supplying small country
orders at 21 cents for Gunny, 19 a 20 for Kentucky, and
18 a 19 for Dundee.
ROPE.—Good supplyon hand. Jute is selling at 10
a 10.1, Kentucky 11 a 11J, and Russia at 11J a 19.
SALT.—No large transactions to report this week.
Retailing from store at $1,40 a 1,50 per sack. Good
supply on hand.
MOLASSES —There is a fair supply of Cuba, which
have an upward tendency. Rio is selling at 8$ a
cents.
is selling at 95 a96 cents. New Orleans is scarce—sell
ing at 30 a 33 cents per gallon.
COFFEE.—Good supply on hand, and prices still
SUGARS.—Market well supplied with all descrip
tions. No change to notice ia prices.
DOMESTIC SPIRITS.—Good stock of all descrip
tions on hand; demand limited.
STOCKS.—There is a good demand for ail descrip
tion of Stocks, and Judders generally show but little
disposition to sell. Sales have been reported to us this
week of 900 Shares Mechanics Bank at sl95 —none now
offering. 50 Shares Georgia Rail Road at $93, at which
price it is held.
EXCHANGE—We have no change to notice in rates,
which continue rj per cent prein. for sight checks on
Northern cities.
FREIGHTS.—Tiie river is still very low, but our
Steamboat Companies are kept busy in bringing up
Goods, at old rates. With the assistance of lighters,
there is not much detention. We have no change to
notice in rates to Savannah or Charleston.
