Cotton. —Our market is depressed, and
prices have a drooping tendency. The sales
to-day reach 900 bales, at prices ranging from
84 to 11| cents.
Result of Fashionable Dissipation. —The
New Yorker mentions the lamentable de
nouement of a young lady in high life, daugh
ter of a clergyman, who was recently married
to a gentleman of iortune, and went to Paris
with her husband, where she plunged into the
gayeties of that splendid city, till her husband
became alarmed, and sent for her father, but
it was too late. The father and the husband
returned to New York sadder and wiser men,
the former to ponder over the truth that vir
tue is more to be prized than wealth or fash
ion. and the latter convinced that a beautiful
woman is not always a beautiful wife, and
that gayety and jewels go but a little way to
make a home happy. The husband has taken
counsel, and the courts will do justice. In the
mean time the fallen beauty remains in Paris,
protected by her charms, and apparently ela
ted by the sensation she has made in that gay
and voluptuous city.
A passing traveller m the backwoods met a
settler, near a house, and enquired: “Whose
house?” “Mogg’s.” “Os what built?” “Logs.”
“Any neighbors?” “Frogs.” ‘What’s the soil?’
“Bogs.” “The climate?” “Fogs.” “Your di
et?” “Hogs.” “How do you catch them?”
“Dogs.”

Augusta Market; April 9; P. M
COTTON.— We have had a quiet market to
day. The few sales made were at yesterday’s
quotations
(Extracts of letters received in Charleston.')
“Liverpool, March 21 — The annexed par
ticulars of the operations carried on in our
market will show that we have experienced
during the present week a decided improve
ment in the demand for Cotton. Apart from
all other considerations, a revival may well
have been anticipated, as it has been apparent
for some time past, owing to the very sparing
manner in which consumers have supplied
themselves since the commencement of the
year, that their stocks must have undergone,
in the meanwhile, a very material reduction.
Indeed, their weekly outgoings, according
to the information we have before us, up to
the present time amount to only 24,800 bales.
To what extent the reduction, to which we
have just alluded, has taken place, it would,
however, be difficult to ascertain,* as it is an
admitted fact that Spinners have been usual
ly large importers. The advices, which reach
ed hereon Monday morning by the steamer,
were not at all of a novel character.
“It is true that thejincrease in the receipts
into the American ports was scarcely in the
same ratio that many had looked lor, and that
the great and rapid decline in prices there was
neutralized in some measures in the Southern
States by the advance in freigh’s and by a
reduction in the rate of exchanges. The main
feature iu the advices was, that although the
receipts now amount to 1,621,709 bales, which
show an excess last year of 113,306 bales, yet,
much more stress than ever is laid upon the
inferiority of the quality, and which had
strengthened the opinion, previously enter
tained, that the crop would really prove very
moderate in extent. In the early part of the
s „ek holders offered sparingly, although ena
bled to obtain an advance of fully £d. per lb.
on the prices of Friday last; but since Tues
day, our market has been much less buoyant
in feeling, and on the whole, there has been
rather more inclination to meet the demand,
and less to purchase on the part of the
trade, and yet there is no yielding in price.
“At Manchester on Tuesday last a firm and
healthy tone was exhibited, but business was
said to have been rather checked by the ad
vanced rates demanded for Goods and Yarn.
In the sales of Cotton which we have to enu
merate are included 8640 balps of American,
40 Brazil, 70 Egyptian, and 1350 Surat taken
on Speculation, and 1520 American, 70 Bra
zil, 30 Egyptian, and 550 Surat for Export*”
“ The entire sales from the 15ih to the 21st
instant inclusive, are computed at 42,630
bales, and the import amounts to 20,543 bales.”
“Liverfool, March 21.— Cotton.— -There
has been a steady and rather active demand
for Cotton during the week, the trade having
bought to a fair extent, though generally in
small parcels; and speculators and exporters
have also been buyers. The advices received
per Baltic on 18th inst., though showing large
recipts and a further fail or prices in the Unit
ed States, were followed by an increasad ac
tivity, and the daily sales have been from
j about 8000 or 9000 to 6000 bales. Prices have
recovered $d per lb. in middling Americans,
and the week’s sales amount to 42,630 bales,
of which 10,000 bales on speculation and 2,-
180 for export.
| “The sales to-day are 6000 bales, the mar
ket closing firmly.
“We quote far Orleans 7|d, middlng 7£d;
iair Mobiles 7£d; middling 7};fair Uplands 7}d
middling 7d.“
SAVANNAH, April B. Cotton. —There was a
fair demand yesterday, the sales footing up 808
bales, at full prices. The following are the par
ticulars : 49 at 9; 14 at 9|; 87 at 105 70 at 10$; 116
at 10$; 60 at 10£; 178 at 10$; 13 at 10}; 201 at 11;
6 at 11$; and 4 bales at 11£ cents.

NORTH AMERICAN
ELECTRIC WASHING FLUID,
For washing in hard or soft water.
f is the only genuine article to be found
A in the world ; and possesses double the pow
er of any thing ever discovered for washing
clothes, at a trifling expense, doing away with
wash boards at once. In fact, it seems to be the
long sought Phi'osopher’s Stone, or universal sol
vent ; seeming a magical preparation, its opera
tion being of the most astonishing chara«:er. A
common sized washing may be done wita one gill
of this Fluid, in less than two hours. It softens
and removes the dirt, leaving the articles of the
most brilliant whiteness. It being as harmless in
its operations as pure water, and clothing will
wear mueh longer than when 1 übbed to pieces by
the common method of washing.
This Fluid is a powerful agent, to be used in all
cases where soap is required, particularly for
cleansing milk utensils, cleaning windows and
paint, scouring floors ; in short, it is beyond a pre
cedent, as its use is universal in the washing world.
