Mysterious Cass. —On Sund- night, as
officer Hergersheimer, of the City _ >liee, was
passing along Union street, near Second, on
official duties, he heard some loud talking in
a house. The party apparently were partly
drunk, and talking about Protestants and
Catholics. One of them was heard to say,
“ this is what fixed John the Pedler off; he
had to be thrown into the Delaware —he’ll
never say any thing more against the Catho
lics." This was about the language made use
of by the person, and the officer walked in
and took him into custody. He was taken to
the lock-up, and on Monday afternoon had a
hearing before the Mayor, which resulted in
his committal for another hearing. Subse
quently, there was evidence enough elicited,
that about six months ago, a person known as
“ Pedler John," suddenly disappeared from
the city,'and has not since been heard of.—
The case is one of mystery. The prisoner
gave his name as Patrick Converey. — Phila
delphia Sun.
A Virginia Compromise. —Mr. Botts has
submitted a compromise in the Virginia Con
vention, to settle the vexed question of repre
sentation. He proposes that tne House of
Delegates shall consist of 150 members, 75
from East of the Blue Ridge, and 75 West of
it. The Senate to be similarly divided and
elected by districts. He also proposes a uni
form ad valorem system of taxation, exeept
where specially exempted by two-thirds of
the Legislature; and to prevent the creation
of a public debt, without at the same time
providing for its payment by increase of taxa
tion. Appropriations, exceeding a certain'
•um, before becoming a law, must receive the
vote of a majority of all the members of each
branch of the Legislature —Baltimore Clipper.
Care of the Eyes.— Looking in the fire is
very injurious to the eye, particularly a cual
fire. The stimulus of light and heat united
destroy the sigLt. Reading in the twilight is
injurious to the eyes, as they are obliged to
make great exertion. Reading or sewing with
a side light injures the eyes, as both should be
exposed to an equal degree of light. The
reason is, the sympathy between the eyes is so
great that if the pupil of one is dilated by be
ing kept partially in the shade, the one that
is most exposed can. ot contract itself suffi
ciently for protection, and will ultimately be
injured. Those who wish to preserve their sight
should preserve their general health by cor
rect habits, and give their eyes just work
enough with a due degree of light.
Ho! for California. — We understand some
twenty-five or thirty persons are leaving this
county, for California. The fever is higher
than it has ever been. Those of their friends
who are already there, are represented as
doing well. A young Mr. Huff has sent back
to his brother, at this place, a piece weigh
ing 140 pennyweights. The gentleman who
brought it, we believe a Mr. Harben, brought
7,000 pennyweights. Success to the adven
turers. — Dahlonega Signal, 24 th inst.
How TO LEARN THE PIANO KEYS IN A Q.UAR
ttsr of an Hour. —Somebody, having been
much troubled to learn the keys of the Piano
Porte, proposed the following lines as an Mle
viation of the labor:
All the G and A keys
Are between ti e black threes,
And ’tween the two are all the D’s
Then on the right side ot the threes
Will be fonnd the B’s and C’s;
But on the left side of the threes
Are all th 6 F’s and all the G’s.
A Roland for ax Oliver.— When Gen
eral Oglethorpe, then a youth of fifteen, was
serving under Prince Eugene, a prince of
Wirtemberg, who sat at table, took a glass of
wine and filiipped some of it into Ogletnorpe’s
face. Oglethorpe, unwiiling to be thought
hasty and irascible, waited his opportunity,
and then said, “Prince, that was a good joke;
but we do it much better in England,” and
threw a whole glass in the prince’s face.
The good man contributes to the wellfare
of others, not alone by positive act and in
struction, but his life resembles a fruit-bea
ring shade tree, by which each passer-by finds
shelter and refreshment, which disinterested
ly and even involuntarily scatters happy
germes upon the surrounding soil, whereby it
produces what is like and similar itself.

Just after our last weekly report was issued, the
news by the America was received per telegraph.
The decline of §d. noticed at Liverpool brought
our market to a stand, and only 27 bales changed
hands on Friday; on Saturday the sales were 94
bales, and on Monday 129 bales, without any quo
table change in the market, though the transac
tions were at irregular prices; the feeling having
been constantly in favor of buyers. On Monday
aiternoon the advices per Pacific, three days later
trom Liverpool, were received, and as the report
ot that market gave the same quotations as the
America, there seemed more disposition to ope
rate on Tuesday, the sales -being 258 bales; oa
Wednesday there was a fair demand, the sa.es a
niounting to 1076 bales; yesterday the sales were
185 bales. The decline during tue week has been
about | cent., though some qualities may have va
ried fth more. The market closes unsettled, and
it is with difficulty we can give any quotations.—
Those below are as correct as couid be given at
this time ; buyers in some cases offering less and
sellers asking more than the figures. There ia
hardly any fine Cotton on the market. We quote:

ELECTRIC WASHING FLUID,
For washing in hard or soft water.
11HIS is the only genuine article to be found
in the world ; and possesses double the pow
er of any thing ever discovered for washing
clothes, at a trifling expense, doing away with
wash boards at once. In fact, it seems to be the
long sought Phi'osopher’s Stone, or universal sol
vent; seeming a magical preparation, its opera
tion being of the most astonishing character. A
common sized washuig may be done with one gill
of this Fluid, in less than two hours. It softens
and removes the dirt, leaving the articles of the
most brilliant whiteness. It being as harmless in
its operations as pure water, and clothing will
wear mueh longer than when lubbed to pieces by
the common method of washing.
I his Fluid is a powerful agent, to be used in all
cases where soap is required, particularly for
cleansing milk utensils, cleaning windows and
paint, scouring floors ; in short, it is beyond a pre
cedent, as its use is universal in the washing world.
