mration is a succumbing to Free Soil influ
ence. If Canada were as she was a few years
ago, in Rebellion, there would not be so much
said, so much done by the Administration as
in this case, the sympathy of the good people
of Buffalo and the border, being very great
for the “ awfully oppressed Canadians." And
ahe would make such a nice Free Soil State.
But Cuba is too far South, would be too hea
vy a weight to throw into the Southern Con
federation, with her magn fieent situation, her
slave institutions, and her invaluable products.
Out upon such hypocritical, two-faced mea
sures. Let the truth be spoken manfully on
all sides. We have, or ought to have liberty
of speech, and freedom of action in this eoun
try, and for one, when I see such truckling,
such inconsistency, and such vaunting cant
thrust forward upon the public as the late
proclamation contains, I shall not be silent
but use my constitutional right to express my
opinion upon it, and the matter at issue. We
were, as a nation, once oppressed —we are now
free. We were once weak and poor :—we are
now strong and rich. We once pined for free
dom, and asked for aid -we obtained both —
and shall we, in the plentitude cf our own
blessings, refuse to aid others to enjoy the
same ? If our Flag is no longer to be looked
up to by the oppressed as the emblem of hope,
and we do not fulfil the mission entrus f ed to
us with regard to this Western world, we
shall betray our trust, and shall most right
eously invoke the scorn not only oi our con
temporizes, but of posterity, as being noth
ing better than “sounding brass, or a tinkling
cymbal.” I would then adjure the people of
our country, of the South, at least, to pause
belore they leave to their hapless fate, a large
and interesting portion of our fellow-beings—
who are our neighbors, and with whom we
hav-* much intercourse, to wither and perish
beneath the blighting, deadening tyranny of
an iron despotism. One good opportunity
has been already lost. Lose this, and an -
ther may not again occur.

Look Oat for Them!
Me. Editor : —I have just learned from a
very reliable source, that several of the ne
groes engaged in the lecent outrage at Abbe
ville, S. C., Lave been ordered to leave that
State. Perhaps some portion of Georgia may
be expected to become their home. If so, it
will be well for the safety and peace of the
people, generally, to be on the look-out, and
order them back again, as well as those vho
may bring them here. Warning.
Tit for Tat—A letter, received by a large
manutactunng establishment at Newark, N.
J., from one oi its ager.ts ft Memphis, men
tions what they are now talking about in Mis
sissippi byway of reprisal on the Northern
tbolitiomsts. It is nothing less thon to pass a
law refusing the North the use of their cou.ts,
judges and sheriffs, 10 collect its debts. They
say the Nortrerners refuse to give up the
property of Southerners, and they will not
help them to get theirs in return. This is a
“Roland for an Oliver,” and indicates some
thing of the state of feeling there. —Baltimore

OBITUARY.
The men of the last generation ar£ fast dis
appearing from ourmidst. One after another,
the patriarch- drop into their graves. We
are called to record the oeath of almost the
last of our merchants cf the old school.
Doctor Thomas J. Wray is no longer among
the living. A man ot more elevated infegrity,
nicer sense of honor, and purer disinterasted
ness, was never numbered among that honora
ble class. He was born in Williamsburg, then
the capital of Virginia, in February, 1781, and
had therefore just entered on his seventy-first
year. At about twenty years of age, he re
moved to this city: and for half a century,
made it the scene of his active exertions. Hav
ing been regularly bred to the medical pro
fession, he was peculiarly fitted for the branch
of trade which he selected for his profession,
and devoting himself to it, with all the zeal
of a peculiarly ardent tecop3rament and all
the diligence of the most untiring industry, he
became distinguished, as the most accomplish
«d pharmaceutist in ths quarter ol the coun
try.
Adding science to skill, he was also one of
the most eminent botanists in the Union ; and
his correspondence was cultivated, by the first
men of that beautiful pursuit, in America and
Europe. He did not labor in vain, for the pe
cuniary rewards of business; but though
eminently successful, the liberality with which
he devoted his ample earnings for the benefit
of his friends, and large and lepeated losses,
from his obligations on account of others,
scattered his fortune to the wind, and left him
destitute, in the decline of life. But his in
dependent spirit ne p er quailed. Asking aid
from nobody, he labored on, for years, and
only ceased his efforts, when age and debility
rendered further exertion physically impossi
ble. His frame sunk, into gradual decay, and
on the twentieth of March, he entered his
eternal rest.
Doctor Wray was widely known, and gen
erally respected. He was sternly upright,
strictly honorable, intolerant of moral wrong,
and sensitive, to a fault, to the appearance, or
suspicion, of what was mean, or paltry. Wlih
such principles, and an open habit of avow
ing them, he sometimes appeared harsh and
prejudiced. But even his prejudices were
those of a noble nature; and if hey ever ob
scured, they never sullied, his tigher, and
kinder, and more generous qualities.
He was long one of the most active and
liberal members of the Episcopal congregation
of St. Paul's Church, and m his later years,
was a regular communicant. He breathed his
last, in the bosom of his lage family, surround
ed by those whom he loved best in the world.
May our la-t hours be like his, peaceful, calm
and happj! The la> ge concourse ot his fel
low-citizens, who attended the c remony of
his funeral, showed the position he occupied,
in the estim tion of the community.
